How to unlock the Fleet Commander achievement in Starfield - Definitive Guide

There's a few methods of acquiring new ships, from doing missions, dogfighting & boarding or buying them outright from a Ship Builder.

But for me ship "Jacking" has been far easier to pull off.

While roaming around the planets you'll often see random ships land on the surface. It's possible to "jack" these ships if you have a couple of points in the Security perk (2 points - advanced locks, 3 points - master locks). Sneak into the back of the ship and use a "Digipick" on the ladder door. Once inside make your way to the cockpit, sit in the captains chair and the ship is yours!

Hold onto 10 of these stolen ships to get the Fleet Commander achievement. If you want to use or sell on these stolen ships, you'll need to pay a few thousand credits to a ship builder to register it. But it's a fraction of what the ships actually worth. Easy money!

"Fraction of what the ship is actually worth"

Maybe not on Higher difficulties (I'm on Hard), one of mine registered for 10k credits and only sells for 12k...

Guess the type of ship and Commerce perk are a factor too. Found a class C ship earlier with a master lock, boarded the ship but didn't have the piloting skill to steal it :/

Does New Game plus add to these numbers or do they get reset?

You can actually register your ships in your own ship menu for cheaper. Rather than at the npc.

Just popped this and wanted to clarify that you have to land somewhere after obtaining the 10th ship for the achievement to register. Twice I snuck onto a ship on a planet only for them to take off into space with me onboard. Game didn't seem to like me taking possession in space.

I tried this and got an 'Unable to pilot ship' message despite having Mastery in Piloting. Any ideas? Also ... when I check ships I have 3/6. Is there a skill I need to upgrade to take it past 6?

Where is this?? cos yes it is nearly the cost of the whole ship to register it so if anyone can expand on the above, that'd be dandy.

@Ronin Sinz: When you take a ship from anywhere else, your "Home Ship" automatically becomes the ship you are piloting. Your other ship is returned to your ship inventory. Take the ship you have stolen to a starport (you will probably have to pay a fine, usually around 1000 credits), talk to the technician and ask to view and modify your ships. You should have the option to register your ship (select/two boxes on the controller). Pay the money then you will own the ship.

Iggsy you can do it at an outpost if you build the landing pad with ship builder. There's a computer at the landing pad that lets you customise and register ships

If you are rich and have 700,000 credits like me, just save the game, go to the store and buy ships to have 10 of them. I had 5 ships, I bought the 5 cheapest ones and the achievement was unlocked. Then you load the save and you get the money back.

This is by far the easiest way. Wait until late game when you have enough money, then hop from vendor to vendor buying every ship that's around 100k. Achievement pops, reload save. Simple.

you don't need to register them. i just got it, i have 3 ships not registered at 9 and then went to capture another in the serpent system and the second i detatched from my home ship i got the achievement :) so you don't need to register them.

This popped for me upon owning 9 ships, one of which was unregistered. I had previously owned a couple more but sold them. Will take it though! P.S. there are cheap ships at New Homestead in Sol, definitely worth a look!

I just commandeered a ship from eclipse while exploring on Alpha Centauri. Left the ship and ran up the hill to a new point of interest and there is a crimson fleet ship I want to take too. Will I lose the eclipse ship since I didn’t go to a ship vender yet or can I commandeer multiple ships at a time. I’m going to risk it but a heads up on how someone could quite literally commandeer ships back to back to back without going anywhere would be nice to know?

So answer that question, there was actually two crimson fleet ships beside each other. I commandeered the first, sat in the seat, start, ship menu, made home, registered. Not sure if you needed to register, maybe someone can confirm if you don’t before keeping more, but then I ran over and took the second ship, same steps and ran back to first one from eclipse and made home n registered. I got 3 ships in 5 minutes. I had to kill a few baddies but no lockpick required. I have maybe 11 day and 6 hours in game thus far and 4 ships. Sweet!

1 day and 6 hours, not 11.

Last side note. All 4 ships stay put until you leave the planet. So you can return to the frontier and set as home before going anywhere.

I never had luck trying to hijack landed ships on planets because the game always marked the entrance to the ship as [Inaccessible] for me. I was near the end of the game and had around 1 million credits so I just made a save, bought a bunch of ships until the achievement popped, and then reloaded. Easy.

I've been going with the boarding method myself, which also seems pretty easy, as you get attacked often enough in space. Just need one point in Targeting Control Systems to be able to do subsystem targeting, which lets you target engines to disable them easily so you can board. I have found contraband items on board when doing that though.

Edit: Decided to go jack a ship, and apparently if you don't sneak on board there's a chance they'll take off. May have been because I decided to kill the snake cult people outside the ship before tying to go on the ship. May have just been a coincidence, but I went back to my ship and took off and the same model ship was in orbit, so wound up taking it by boarding it.

For this achievement, the best option I found was to land in different parts of the Moon (SOL) until you find landed ships. I also recommend playing with a headset so you can hear if any ships land near your location.

And if you're still reading this, good morning, good afternoon and good night.

This no longer works as of the 1.7.33 update, which was released on September 26, 2023
This is a glitch that works as of publication of this game guide, Sep 17, 2023.

You will need a power boost jetpack (you can do it without a power boost pack, but you have to use a different route, more on that in the bottom), and thats about it.

On Jemison/New Atlantis, start in the commercial district. Run up past Galbank, to where you should see a tree (2) up against a colorful wall:
External image

Jump up to the top of this colorful wall (3), and jump through the door (4) that will be off to the right. You will pass through it, and fall a ways down beneath the map. Tap your boost pack before you land to avoid sprains/breaks.

External image

Run in a south-south-west direction (2), keeping to the right of the little square rooms (1). There's fountains on the left side (3), that have water geometry extending down, and if you go into them you'll have to swim, which uses oxygen.

Eventually the ground will start to slope down below, and you'll see a cliff in front of you:
External image

Jump off the cliff, avoiding the "upper" level of ground (1, 2, and 3), aiming for the little hole thats open (4).

External image

Down on the lower level, there are a couple merchant chests you can loot; one for Terrabrew (1), and one for Jemison Mercantile (2). Both have a good number of items and credits that you can resell later. Regardless if you're looting them or not, travel off to the right (3).

Once you get past the buildings, keep running forwards, and you should see the ground drop out in front of you. This is the walkway off the landing pad into New Atlantis proper. Drop down into the lower gulch area, and you should see, in front, above, and to the right, another merchant chest:
External image

This is the ship merchant. Steal all his credits, and then jump up through the map in front of him.

You can now purchase a ship (or multiple). Buy as many as you can afford, you'll get the money back. Once you've bought all you can afford, fast travel to the Commercial district, and repeat the process. You won't be able to loot the other merchant chests the second time, as they've yet to restock, but you can get your money back out of the ship merchant's chest. Rinse and repeat until he's out of ships to sell.

Now you need to jump to and land on Venus. Once landed on Venus, rest or sleep for 10 local hours (1000 hours UT), and then you can travel back to New Atlantis and repeat the process. You can also stop at any merchant you like and sell the items you've looted from the shop, for easy credits.

----

If you don't have a power boost pack, when you get to the tree, you'll see a rise over to the right, with some trees between the building with the door and it. You can jump your way across those trees onto the building, and get through the door.

For me the easiest way to do this was to go to the Serpentis system and just travel from planet to planet, disabling Va'ruun ships, boarding them and then taking them. There's a high chance to spawn at least one ship every time you travel, they do often take between 10-20 seconds to spawn after you arrive so wait before you fly to another planet.

The system is Level 55 so make sure you're a fairly high level before attempting this, I used the Targeting Control Systems perk to target their engines and disable them, but you might find using
EM weaponry easier if you don't have any skill points available.

After you sit in the Pilot Seat, press cn_start, go to the Ship option on the bottom left and then press cn_start again to make the new ship your home ship. After that, hold cn_B so you exit the menu, this will automatically undock you from your main ship. Then quickly use cn_A to target your old ship before it flies away, hold cn_X to dock and then make your way back to the Pilot Seat and make it your home ship again. Exit and then the ship you just took over will fly away, leaving you to carry on to the next planet.

Best solution for this achievement, in my opinion. Couple of things to add: 1) The Serpentis system is to the "southeast" of the Ixyll system, which is named on the starmap. 2) Targeting engines worked much better for me too than using EM weaponry. 3) The system is flooded with hostiles, so if you want to farm up ship kills for, say, leveling up the Piloting skill, this is where you want to go. 4) Some ships you'll board can be hard to navigate on the inside, so track the "Kill the crew" quest on the Activities tab and your scanner will show you the path to the right floor/ladder/hatch/door. Happy hunting!

Easy achievement if you know what to do.

What to do beforehand:
1. Finish all faction questilnes.
2. Beat the game or progress until before you start the main questline's last mission called One Giant Leap
StarfieldOne Giant LeapThe One Giant Leap achievement in Starfield worth 104 pointsComplete "One Giant Leap"

At this point you should have at least 4 ships, plus +1M CR.

Travel to Alpha Centaury - Jemison - Viewpoint.
Create a manual SAVE.

Now, go to the Ship Services technician that is located in front of your ship.
He has 8 ships for sale, just buy the ships that cost less than 200K CR each, should cost you up to 800K CR total.

Enjoy your achievement toast

I just completed this achievement (it even unlocked at 9 ships, who knows why). I just wanted to list some unique ships that you get just playing the game, if you don't feel like capturing or buying random ships right away:

1) Frontier, the first ship you get in the game after the beginning quest.
- Razorleaf, complete the

2) Datura, obtained in the
quest line, however be advised that, to get it, you need to
. This way you will be able to take the ship.

3) UC Prisoner ship, at the end of the first
quest.

4) Star Eagle, that you get by finishing the
questline.

5) Kepler S or R, which you get at the end of the "Overdesigned" side quest, given to you by
which is part of the Main quest (it is a B or C class ship so you will need Rank 3 or 4 Piloting for this one!)

6) Dagger, for which you simply need to clear out Vulture's Roost on Jaffa Iv, then take the ship at the end.

There are probably more but that is the ones I got while playing the game normally.

There are many ways to get ships in Starfield. You can buy them from a Ship Services Technician - same guy you visited for the Chief Engineer (10G) achievement - or you can even board and commandeer ships, before visiting the Ship Services Technician (yup, same guy) and registering them - this will add them to your fleet for a chunk of credits.

On top of that, certain missions like the Mantis mission, will net you a free ship too (check out our Starfield – How to get the Mantis' Razorleaf, one of the best ships in the game, early to net that one), so keep an eye out for them.

To get this achievement, then, you simply have to collect 10 ships. Whether you get them as a reward, buy them and then register them, or commandeer them, it doesn’t matter. Just get 10 and start a proper space fleet.
