How to unlock the I Use Them For Smuggling achievement in Starfield - Definitive Guide

Before you can smuggle contraband you will need a ship with a shielded cargo hold. If you have the credits the vendor in Atalantis near the landing pad usually sells ships that already have this. If not you will have to find a vendor that sells a Shielded Cargo Hold and equip it to your ship.

Easiest way to get contraband is to steal it from contraband caches in security checkpoints and/or jails. (requires expert lockpicking at most.) There is one on the Planet Gagarin (Alpha Centauri - Gagarin - Gagarin Landing) the security checkpoint is right next to the landing pad. Steal the contraband from the cache.

Once you have contraband put it in your cargo hold on your ship and fast travel to another planet to get scanned. (Make a manual save before hand)

Once you've been successfully scanned the achievement will unlock.

Join the Crimson Fleet. Once you do, you’ll have access to The Key, where you can go to Jasmine Durand and she’ll have the equipment necessary to smuggle contraband. I haven’t unlocked the achievement yet and it is next on my list, but this is the best option.

Look, there’s others, but if you’re like me and spread out your skill point usage so far (Level 35 currently), then to get the necessary skills to pull off contraband smuggling will take longer. Crimson Fleet membership and access to The Key is the fastest and easiest way.

Quick contraband if you have access to Vae Victus just go down to the secure area and there is a case of antiquities right there to be transported "smuggled"

I tried entering New Atlantis with a 59% chance of success and was detected nine times in a row. Since the odds of this are statistically negligible, it means that the RNG seed is set sometime before arriving in system.

Instead, to boost your chances, invest skill points in deception or purchase scan jammers from Lon in Red Mile.

I too kept having it be detected with the 59% chance. After the third time in a row I got caught, I bought the dual-frequency jammer which bumped it up to 77%, and then got past first try. I actually have smuggled several other times since and haven't been caught yet.

if you have the adoring fan, putting him on your ship's crew increases your chances too. I was at 57% with a multi frequency jammer and 160 capacity shielded hold (the basic one you can buy) and level 1 deception with vaarun heretic writings and harvested organs. Putting him on my crew put me up to 90%. Got it first try.

If you have entered New Game+ you will gain access to a ship from the start that has shielded cargo. Once you choose to skip the main story you will be tasked with collecting six artefacts. Two of these locations contain contraband that isn't too hard to find. Just pick up one, place it in the cargo hold which can be found on the left side of the ship when facing the pilots chair. Now fly to any planet that will scan you, I chose to head back to Jemison.
The chance of success for me was 59%. I failed the first time and reloaded the autosave which resulted in a successful attempt.

The side quest for the Mantis’ Lair gives you a free starship with a shielded cargo bay, as well as a very good unique set of armor and a decent haul of weapons.

@Trombinafide You can find the Mantis quest by killing spacers and looking at their body for loot. It will be a slab called SECRET OUTPOST! Pick up that slab and go to your notes page to actually "read" it. Once you have read it, just follow the instructions for the quest.

I will say that the mission will kind of lead you to the hangar where the ship is located. Go up to the platform and flip the lever to release the ship. BUT then turn around and go to the left of the stairs you came down. That will lead to a room that has the mantis armor in a case. OH I almost forgot. The password to get past the "kill room" is TYRANNIS. You will have to walk across each letter one at a time like the floor in the Goldeneye 64 Temple.

If you have a ship with 150 shielded, then your contraband will have to be in the first 150 cargo of your ship. If it is added after 150, it won't be shielded.

Travel to Porrima System > Plant Porrima III > Red Mile > Speak to Lon Anderrsen > click mod ship > in equipment buy a scan jammer > in cargo buy a storage bay that has the word shielded in its name.

Then follow this video, don't go to Wolf and sell. Store your cargo in the ship, its a blue LCD screen left side of your cockpit. Then travel to Jemison and try and smuggle the contraband. Make a save after you get the contraband and put it your cargo, if this planet fails reload and try another

Credit to willisgaming

Then go to wolf to sell the cargo.

There’s nothing more exhilarating in Starfield than smuggling contraband. Watching that scan run over your ship whilst simultaneously crossing your fingers is such a thrill. That said, successfully smuggling contraband isn’t exactly straightforward, so let’s run you through the process.

Firstly, you need to know what contraband is. Contraband isn’t stolen sandwiches or weapons, contraband is an actual separate thing in Starfield, and they come in the form of swanky briefcases - you can tell if it’s contraband if there’s a small yellow symbol next to the item when you look at it in any inventory.

Secondly, you need to know where to get it. Contraband can be found in numerous places, but the best bet to regularly find it is to board enemy ships, destroy the crew, and loot anything valuable - look out for black briefcases and what not. This is usually contraband. For a more detailed guide on how to board and commandeer ships, check out our Starfield - How to board and commandeer ships guide.

And finally, how do you smuggle it (for the achievement) and where do you sell it (not for the achievement, but for sweet, sweet cash).

First things first, in order to sell contraband you need to visit a Trade Authority on any planet - and by that we mean a Trade Authority store, and not a Trade Authority kiosk. The New Atlantis one is in The Well, the Akila City Trade Authority is in the back alleys of the wild west town, and the one on Neon is on the strip.

Now, there are multiple ways to smuggle for the purposes of the achievement:
  • The Exhilarating Way - This way involves buying Shielded Cargo and going through the scanners at the major cities and settlements, so you can make it to the Trade Authority. For a more detailed description of how to do this, and where to get Shielded Cargo, check out our Starfield - How to smuggle contraband guide.
  • The Easy Way - Go and visit the Den in the Wolf system (just right of Sol; and up and to the right from Alpha Centauri) because they don’t scan there and there’s a solitary Trade Authority there too.
We’re assuming the latter counts as smuggling - we did it the hard way, so can’t confirm - but if it fails, you know what to do otherwise.

Before we leave you to it though, a few more tips and things to note:
  • Contraband does not sell for the price that’s quoted in your inventory, so don’t get your hopes up too high. If you have the Commerce skill though, you will be able to get a bit more money.
  • Apparently, according to the load-screen text, the Payloads skill (which is there to increase your ship cargo hold size) is also meant to make it harder for authorities to detect contraband.
  • If you have contraband on you, avoid planets that have cities and large settlements on them, as you’ll automatically be scanned as you enter the orbit of the planet. If you forget you have some and they're mid-scan, quickly fast-travel out of there before the scan concludes. I can't tell you how many times I completely forgot I was packing an insane amount of contraband with no Shielded Cargo. Oops!
Anyway! Smuggle one bit of contraband successfully and this achievement is all yours. Just bear in mind that it’s not a 100% chance either, so maybe save before trying this.
