How to unlock the World's Greatest Warrior achievement in Tales of Xillia - Definitive Guide

You'll need two things before even attempting this:

1) A golden key, which can be obtained by beating the game.
2) The Devil weapons, which can be obtained by defeating the Devil Beasts.

Once you've collected all of this, head to the man in Sapstrath who gave you the Devil Beast quest to begin with. This will cause a portal to appear in Fezebel Marsh. Enter the portal, and you'll be brought to a fancy world full of places you've seen already. Except now they have crazy monsters and portals to different places you've seen already. Just keep progressing through these areas and eventually you'll reach the Golden Mage Knight.

The fight itself is quite interesting, and I won't spoil it other than to say that, like most hard JRPG enemies, there are multiple phases that get consecutively harder. On the later phases, be liberal with your use of items (especially hourglasses / all-divide if you're getting damaged too much) and you should be able to bring him down. Bring lots of healing items and make sure you're configured to automatically use them aggressively.

To fight the Golden Mage Knight you must first meet two criteria:

  • Obtain the Golden Key (Rewarded to you for beating the game)
  • Obtain all the Devil Arm weapons

Once you meet this criteria you will be able to access to the area where you can fight the Golden Mage Knight.

Devil Beasts and Devil Arm Weapons
Early in the game you will encounter an older gentlemen sitting on some barrels in Sapstrath Seahaven, he will tell you of the history behind the Golden Mage Knight and the Devil Beasts whom hold the Devil Arm weapons on their bodies. Check each of their locations as listed below and defeat each of them for the respective Devil Arm:

  • Dranzort (Tatalian Abyss, bottommost floor)
  • Folzam (Bermia Gorge - Northwest Region, just before the entrance to the NE region, climb some vines and it’ll be at the top)
  • Schweiss (Xailen Woods center area, use Temple Entrance to reach it quicker)
  • Gatrega (Xagut Floodmeadow, take the bottom left entrance from the NE region)
  • Melanbron (Helioborg Fortress, area where you fought Volt)
  • Roparde (Old Vicalle Mine, first western area)

You can fight most of the Devil Beasts early on in the game (aside from some such as Millas and Rowens), however it is heavily advised that you wait to fight these bosses during post game when you are properly developed with higher levels and better equipment, as they are a huge threat even on the easiest difficulty. When you do fight them, exploit their weaknesses and have two party members (Elize and Leia work well) sitting on the sidelines set to “Only Heal”.

After defeating all of the Devil Beasts, report back to the old man in Sapstrath Seahaven, which will trigger the portal to Magnus Zero which will be located in Fezebel Marsh. Before heading into Magnus Zero, stock up on life recovery items and Hourglass items if they are available for purchase from your item shop, as they will be very essential to the coming boss fight.

Magnus Zero
Magnus Zero brings you to an alternate world that transports you through various fields and cities that you will very familiar with. This area is good for Loot and Treasure chests if you are still in need of their respective trophies as well as leveling up. Be wary of some of the enemies, as one of them as the ability to petrify a party member as well as duplicate itself, fighting one isn’t so bad however when the field is filled with them it becomes a problem.

If you’re looking to go straight to the Golden Mage Knight, you can skip all the enemies and go through each portal moving forward, once you reach what looks to be the top of a cliff from Bermia Gorge, save at the save point and prepare yourself for a tough battle.

Fighting the Golden Mage Knight

Before going through the portal to face the Golden Mage Knight, make sure you have a good team set up you are comfortable with. If you are unsure of what to set, and who to use a good setup to have is the team Milla, Jude, Leia and Elize. You will control Milla while linked to Jude, and make use of his Restore ability. You will get knocked down a lot, and this will be a great way to build up the Overlimit gauge faster for more link artes and Overlimit. Not only that, Jude has a chance of resurrecting you if you were to get K.O’d via his Restore ability, easily one of the best partners to have for this fight. Meanwhile, you want Leia and Elize to prioritize healing; make sure they are set to “Only Heal” and “Do Not Link”, so that they effectively do their job.

Next check your equipment for anything useful you can capitalize on such as the following:

  • Faerie Ring (Reduces TP cost)
  • Mystic Symbol/Emblem (Reduces Casting Time)
  • Krona Symbol (Prevents status ailments)
  • Affinity Stone (Link Artes Gauge fills faster)

If you don’t have these items in your accessory shop, don’t worry, as they are not a necessity but they do help nonetheless. Finally, make sure you artes shortcut to Milla that all link with Jude as well as one for the Mystic Arte, such as Overdrive.

Going into the fight the Golden Mage Knight really isn’t that hard; however it has rock hard defense and a lot of health, so you’ll be at it for a while. When he gets to phase two and duplicates himself, you want to keep focus on one Knight, and then take out the other afterwards. Finally the phase that really makes this fight difficult is the third phase where he splits in three; at this point it feels like he received a damage boost, and strong artes that could cause confusion to your party members.

At this phase, you want to spam your Hourglass items, and at least try to take out one of the three Knights before you run out of stock to lessen the trouble in this fight. Once you take out one of them, the fight is pretty easy from then on, but still be careful about your party members getting hit with confusion, as that can ruin the entire fight for you (if it does happen switch to a party member who isn’t confused and use an item to cure everyone one by one; if Elize hasn’t be afflicted then you can relay on her to use Dispel).

Throughout the fight, your offensive tactic will be to build Link Artes Gauge, reach Overlimit, chain your Link Artes, and then leave enough time to use a Mystic Arte. Recycling this tactic is sure to win you the fight in no time.
