Upgrade both your weapon and armor to level 5. Just concentrate on getting gold during all of the encounters and focus on leveling up only one character. Upgrade them both at the same time so if you get a weapon or armor gifted to you then it will save you gold in the long run. If you are getting to the end of your run and you are close, then get to Toledo or Astorga and you can sell ALL your relics which will hopefully give you enough gold to upgrade the final last pieces.
You can even sell the grail here for roughly 100 gold, then upgrade your weapons/armor and the trophy will pop. Quit direct to the dashboard and reload and you will be back at the start of the town with the relics still intact.
