How to unlock the Marooned Everyone achievement in The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition - Definitive Guide

Marooned Everyone
-----------------------

To get this achievement you need to see both endings of the game.

One where you sink the Sea Monkey and Maroon Otis, Carla and Meathook.

And one where you don't sink it and Herman is left behind.

Save before you push the boulder of the top of the mountain. (You'll have to climb two footholds)

1. Don't move the ancient device = Sea Monkey sinks
2. Pull the device twice before you push the boulder = you hit the banana tree instead and progress with the story.

Lame, I was thinking I could just reload the save and sink the boat real quick and it would pop, but I actually have to finish the game a second time.

figures, and you always have to shoot the banana tree, the decision is sinking the ship or not sinking it

I can't remember which ending I chose. I've completed the game about ten times back on the Atari. Which is the most common ending? I'll guess I did that.

"To get this achievement you need to see Both endings of the game." This is kind of ridiculous because if you sink the Sea Monkey on the first play-through, are you not doing what the achievement descriptions says? For god sakes the achievement description should say something along the lines of "Discover and watch both endings to this game. Or "Finish the story twice and see both endings."
Anyway.....

I think the reason you need to finish it with both endings is that if you sink your own ship you actually travel back to Melee on Herman's boat (therefore rescuing him). To maroon Herman therefore you also need to play where you leave on your own boat (the sea monkey) and leave Herman behind.

I think the achievement description says you have to maroon Herman AND your crew, which is only possible by doing both endings :)

What really busted my imaginary balls is that I could not figure out how to get the 2 extra bananas when you're not aiming at the banana tree...

For those who are passing by (prepare yourself for a "duh" moment) this thread and can't just figure out how to get the last 2 bananas... On the top of the mountain where you push the rock off the ledge... you can pick up a new rock to push over just to the right.

So I created a save point just before the rock, hit the tree then finished the game. Reloaded that save point, sank the ship and finished it to get the other ending. No achievement. Am I missing something?

Ok so I've just sank the ship and this will be my first play through, and i won't get the achievement for doing it in 3 hours as i'm already past it, so ill need another play through so when i start my next game from the start i can get the other ending to get this achievement can't i?

@PresidentScroob: Not true. I finished entire game in 6 hours; in this playthrough I sank the ship. I got the ending where the crew is left behind in the cannibals' hut. I restarted the game from scratch for the speedrun and finished it in ~2 hours. This time I did not sink the ship and got the other ending where Herman is left behind on the beach. Achievement popped together with the speedrun achievement in the end scene with Elaine.

The most common is to sink the Sea Monkey.

The fourth game Escape from Monkey Island also expected that you got that ending since it continued the story of your crew.

I was having a hard time with this - it won't work if you play 2 games and see the 2 different endings. You need to do this in a single game. As others have mentioned, create a manual save before using the catapault. I then sank the ship, played through to the end - all the way to the point where Elaine asks if you want a root beer. Create a second save at this point, and it should be 100% complete (if it isn't you need to go a little further before saving). Now reload the first save, and don't sink the ship, and play all the way through. It popped for me right around the point where Elaine asks if you want a root beer.

(Missable)

This trophy requires some planning from the beginning of your playthrough. The most important thing to remember is you can carry on through the game only using the Auto-Save or you can save on Save Slot #1 when needed but you should not use Save Slot #2 at any point. At the point when you use the rock catapult (referred to in game as "primitive art") to knock two more bananas off the tree, you should create a save in Slot #1. After using the catapult for its intended purpose you can play through the rest of the game and you will return to Melee Island with your crew. The game will end showing Herman Toothrot still stranded on Monkey Island and the game will remember that you have seen the first ending.

OR

You may also wait to make your final save in Slot #1 until right before you head into the Monkey Head Cave to get the root. The river fork location and the catapult can be accessed all the way up to this point so starting your replay for the second ending here, would mean much less of the game to play (as long as you save the ship destruction for the replay). It is important to not save further progress on Slot #1 for the last section of the game so you don’t lose your opportunity to change the ending.

Please note that if you need to, quitting and auto-saving after this point, up until the end of the game, won't void your opportunity for this trophy. You can do so and return to your game by loading the auto-save at any time. The important thing is to have a save to go back to for the second ending and to not use a second Save Slot.

After you have played out the first run, load your save and use the rock catapult for the bananas, then use it again to destroy your ship out in the distance. Play through the rest of the game, using Herman’s ship to get back to Melee Island and finish the game to see the fate of the crew. You should receive the trophy as the final cutscenes play out.

Two further points to consider:

It has been reported that this trophy can be achieved by playing through the game all the way through twice only ever using the auto-save. This can be an alternate option for those who wish to attempt the speedrun on a second playthrough. I did not personally play test this method as it is not the most effective and quickest way to get this trophy but I have seen multiple reports that it does work. Use this method only if you fail to create a save before you lose your chance to use the rock catapult.

There were rumors that the trophy will not be achieved if the second ending is attempted in a separate play session and that you must load the save and complete the second ending in one session to get it. I tested out the validity of this by finishing the first playthrough, letting the credits complete and the game to reload to the menu screen, exited out of the game and turned off the PS3 for three hours. Once I rebooted the console, opened up the game and loaded my save, I was able to play the last thirty minutes of the game getting the other ending and the Marooned Everyone trophy with no issue.

The third chapter could end with two different endings. The ending depends on whether you use a catapult to knock down bananas from a banana tree on the very first beach of Monkey Island, or whether you install the catapult incorrectly and shoot down your own ship. complete the third part in two different ways and after finishing the second playthrough of the game the trophy will unlock.
