Extinguish a Sim on fire.

2.9%

How to unlock the But it's Inflammable! achievement in The Sims 3 - Definitive Guide

1. Raise your handiness skill (level one is enough - anything above may make the achievement harder to obtain).
2. Buy one of the cheaper fireplaces (you can find them in the Build Mode, I bought the 'Pyro-Pit').
3. Use the 'Epic Fail' karma power on your sim.
4. Make sure there are NO fire detectors in the room. Light up the fireplace and tell your sim to tinker it.
5. Eventually, the fire will spread on your sim, at this point select another sim in your household and extinguish the burning sim. Achievement unlocked.

If you're still struggling with the achievement, you might need to try this with a sim with specific traits such as clumsy, unlucky or absent minded (thanks to Onju1985 for pointing this out).

Using this method I unlocked it on my first try. Make sure to use Epic Fail on that poor sim before attempting this.

Yes, that's right. One more thing, I believe this has to be done on a member of your family, not a random NPC from the town. So make sure Shemp Howard is a member of your household.

Great solution...I'd just like to add that I was also having problems with this, tried about 3 times with different sims at level 1 handy skill but to no avail...I then started a new game and gave the new sim traits such as absent minded, clumsy and unlucky...tried again and it worked first time.

Fireplaces can be found in Build mode > Decorative > Fireplaces.

Another good trait for your sim to have that you want to burn is "Daredevil".

If your sim can't seem to get on fire after a while, try doing it with another one. But beware, because the higher the handiness skill, the harder it will be to get a sim on fire.

Worked great but i thought the fireplace was under "buy". My fault but it might help if it where also included in the actual solution for some others, ty and +1.

Same here, I was having trouble with the solution itself, even using the Epic Fail karma power and the clumsy/unlucky/absent-minded traits, but the poke in a small room thing worked within seconds for me.

Confirming that creating a small room and poking the fire works. Within 2 minutes my Sim caught fire.

I don't think a small room makes a difference. But poking worked for me. I poked it with the recommended traits and I caught on fire within seconds (and I was outside, so no room at all)

So we cast the Epic Fail on say Shemp Howard and he tinkers with the fire and gets caught on fire...Then you get another Sim like a wife sim to extinguish the Shemp Hoard sim?

I really had problems to fget this achievement. I tried your solution about 6-8 times, but I always just got the furniture on fire, not the sims.
Then I searched on youtube for a solution and followed this: I built a small room and put the first fireplace in it. Then I made my sims to "poke the fire" multiple times (I didn't uses "epic fail"), after about 5-6 "poke the fire" the fire "jumped" on my sims :]

So if you have problems to get this achievemt, maybe this solution helps you.

I'm not sure which trait gave the option but I made a sim with:

Clumsy, absent-minded, loser, unlucky, neat

When I clicked on a fire place I had the option to poke the fire. I did this twice and he set himself on fire. My other sim was brave so could extinguish him. This way no karma powers were needed and there was no collateral damage. Easy achievement when you know how!

Any problems with this solution, please contact me and I will amend. Happy simming!

All of my characters thus far have had the option to poke the fire, and only one had any of the traits listed (unlucky), so I'm not sure it's a trait that causes it to show up. Either way, this solution works great!

The traits make it more likely to catch on fire. I had a sim that could poke the fire but over an hour later he still hadn't caught fire. Thank you though :)

I actually set this achievement up by mistake..

I had my sim visit some friends that live accross the road, they were a large family and while he was there the majority of the family had gone to bed and i wanted to "refresh" my sim with the karma power that sets all his needs to full.

Now, i accidently clicked on the "Firestorm" power and set it off in the house. Most of the storm was upstairs (where the family was sleeping) and it quickly took hold, the family didn't have a fire alarm and because most of the top floor was on fire and my sim didn't have the "brave" trait he would attempt to help put out the fires and then went back to panicing and running around the house.

Now, one of the sims who was asleep was trapped in the bedroom due to the flames and was panicing and running around, but he had managed to move himself close enough to the door for me to tell my sim to "extinguish" him.

I quickly got the achievement and them set about ringing the fire service (which is pretty hard to do when you don't have the "brave" trait as your sim refuses to use his phone and it wouldn't let me select it.. i had to exit the house altogether before i could use it (the family didn't have a land line phone either)).

This is not a sure 'fire' way to get this achievement, i just thought i'd add it for those who only have one sim in their household. You never know, some one might find it helpful.

PS.. there is no need for the "Epic Fail" karma power to be used in this method.

I got mine while I was going after "Child Prodigy" -- had my teen sim bashing on the first stove in the cheap 3 bedroom house to raise his handliness skill -- thankfully my adult sim was home to put him out. Purely by accident -- but seriously, those cheap stoves are fire hazards, just a cheaper way than spending karma points or for a cheap fireplace -- fire hazards are a given in the first home, you just gotta find what makes a spark.

The first thing you're going to want to do is sell your fire alarm if you have one, also make sure no repair men or maids are in the house because they will put out the fire. Now that nothing will stop this fire you have to make one. If you have a clumsy sim they often set the oven on fire but I suggest that you use the firestorm Karma power. The power costs 15 Karma points so you shouldn't have to wait more than a day if you don't have enough points. Another easy way is making a fire place and having a sim play with it until a fire starts. Make walls around the fire place so the sim is stuck and he should start a fire relatively quickly. Once you use the power a fire will start on some items in your house. Once it starts up get your sims as close to the fire as possible. I got lucky, my guy was sitting in a chair and the chair caught on fire. Once a sim is on fire get another sim that you can control like a wife or one of your kids and click on them as if you were going to have a conversation with them. You will see an option that says put out sim. Use it and the sim you're controlling will take out a fire extinguisher and save the sim. You will get the trophy soon after the sim has no flames on him.

Here is a step by step method of doing this achievement:

1. Make sure you have two Sims that you can control at your house.
2. Make sure that one of them has the Brave trait.
3. Change the autonomy level of your Sims to puppet.
4. Build a fireplace in your home ("Build and Buy" > Build > fireplace).
5. Make sure you don't have a fire alarm in your house.
6. Set the fireplace alight and then get the Sim without the brave trait to upgrade it.
7. If you get close to upgrading choose another upgrade, keep doing this until you set your Sim on fire.
8. As soon as the Sim is on fire choose extinguish Sim with the Brave Sim.

Here is an alternate method: Guide
