How to unlock the Fit For a King achievement in The Sims 3 - Definitive Guide

To get the achievement, prepare a meal of perfect quality. takuto neko notes that this must be as you create it: you cannot create a less-than-perfect meal and then 'kick it up a notch'.

There are several factors which affect the quality of a meal that your sims can prepare.

1. Cooking skill
You can improve your cooking skill by reading cooking book available from the library and bookshop, watching the cookery channel on tv, and by actually cooking!

2. Appliance Quality
The more expensive, the better. In buy mode, each appliance tells you the quality of that item. Note that if a sim has high repair skills, you can improve some kitchen appliances to result in better food.

3. Traits
The 'Natural Cook' trait and the 'Perfectionist' trait.
If trying for this achievement with a new sim, choose these traits. You can also use the lifetime reward 'Mid-life Crisis' to re-choose your traits.

4. Skill Challenges
Menu Maven is an easy enough challenge to complete. Simply have your sim watch the cooking channel whenever possible. As well as improving the cooking skill level, you will pick up recipes from time to time. You need to max out the cooking skill to learn the last recipe. Any recipes you don't learn from the cooking channel you can also buy from the bookshop.

5. Practice
The more a sim prepares a meal, the better they get at making it. Simply have your sim only ever cook one kind of meal for each mealtime, and they should get better at it eventually.

6. Ingredient Quality
For the meals that you can provide ingredients for (see in-game skill journal) the higher the quality of ingredients will result in higher quality food.
If you use normal quality apples to make apple pancakes, it will be of a lesser quality than one made with perfect quality apples. Having a sim with the gardening skill to provide ingredients may be a good idea.

Great solution! Would using the 'Get Lucky' karma power also increase the chances of a perfect meal?

how do you use the mid life crisis?

You don't even need to do all this except have a cooking skill above 8.

My sim had a cooking skill that just hit 9. Traits - Genius, Athletic, Ambitious, Good Sense of Humor, and Friendly. She was the gardener of the family so that probably did help but the key here is to use the "Have" option not the "Serve" option. I kept using the latter. The first time I used "Have" I made perfect waffles.

ninJA, you applied my #1, #6 and #5 :) You didn't mention the appliance quality.
#1: Skill
#6: Ingredient quality (grew them yourself as a good gardener)
#5: Practice (waffles are a common meal to make).

All the things I listed WILL improve your meal quality.

To use mid life crisis, press the back button and navigate through the menus. Not played the game for a while but you'll see the option under one of the pages.

Try making it perfect from scratch rather than kicking it up. Yes, you got it to perfect quality, but the meal prepared wasn't. I'll edit the solution to suggest that. Unlucky though :(

Try disabling free will when you go for this achievement. I forget the name of the option but look through the settings. Hopefully that should put the minx in her place!

+1. I got it at cooking skill 7 or 8, with natural cook and while making the 3rd hamburger. :)

Do you have to have traits? I got my person up to Max Cooking but I'm not sure if I should start over just to get those traits? .-.

Traits help, makes the whole thing quicker. Mid Life Crisis will let you switch your traits.

I didn't even need to cook anything, my sim was in bed and I told him to make a lobster dish ($75) he was still asleep and the achievement popped, he had full cooking skill and the best cooker if that helps anyone, he also knew every recipe

Personally I've never used Get Lucky so I can't confirm or deny that. But it surely doesn't hinder making a good meal!
Based on how easily you can gain karma points (especially if you're trying to get 1000 wishes and get 4 karma for each) I'd say go ahead and use Get Lucky.

What should be added is that the recipe matters. If you cook a lvl 0 soup sandwich, you probably wont get a perfect. However, higher level recipes have a better base quality. E.g. "Ambrose" is guaranteed to come out perfect, though the gimmick is that you have to manually source both very rare ingredients.

I tried the Suprise stew with 2x Perfect fish, but even with luck boost karma power I fell short every time. The meal came out "outstanding" which is one tier below perfect. I then switched to Dim Sum, now using 3x fish ingredients and got a Perfect the first time.

Here's the order of the descriptive words used to describe the quality of food:
Normal
Nice
Very Nice
Great
Excellent
Outstanding
Perfect

Here's how to find out what level your recipes are currently at:
Hit 'X' to open up the skills list. Scroll down to Cooking and hit 'A' to open the skills journal. Tab across to the right to 'Recipes Known' with the LS. Here it shows you all the recipes you've made, and their quality. Hit 'Y' and change the list order to 'quality'. Scroll to the bottom to find your best quality recipe so far. Choose something from the bottom of the list (highest quality) and keep making that item to improve the quality. It'll improve in quality quicker than if you choose something that you can only make at 'normal quality', for instance.

Also, I think your mood might have an affect - it does with other skills such as writing and painting (changes the value of the things you create; higher mood = higher sell value), so it might be a good idea to practice when they're in a good mood. I like to practice when they have a few good moodlets, and put the stereo onto their favourite music channel to give them a mood boost too.

I got my achievement with the Lobster, and had to make it about 4 times before the achievement popped. My character had a level 10 cooking skill, and didn't have the Natural Cook trait. I didn't bother buying any perfect ingredients, I just bought 'from the fridge' each time and still got the achievement.

ok this is what happened to me.......i have the trait Natural cook, my cooking skill is 10, i have the most expensive oven and then randomly the achievement popped when i cooked a perfect French toast so my suggestion

Have the trait - Natural Cook, you can also change traits using the lifetime reward "mid life crisis"

cooking level - 10

Get the most expensive oven

Then just keep making French toast

hope this helps because it totally happened to me at random :)

Want to add to this. I also did it with French Toast. However, I maxed out my garden skill with Apples and ended up growing perfect apples before hand. I made French Toast (as soon as you can unlock it, level 9 cooking, iirc) for the first time and got the achievement.

Oh and FYI, no traits such as Natural Cook were used. Got this with level 9 cooking.

To get this, it's best to max out your cooking skill. Not only that but buy the best possible cooking equipment and have someone with a high Mechanical skill upgrade them to improve cooking quality. Now keep making high level dishes like Lobster Thermador or Turkey and when you're done, you can "Kick it Up A Notch". Once it comes out Perfect, trophy unlocked.

Perfect meals can be made once you're good at making a certain meal. Make the same meal over and over again and you'll get better and better at making that meal. Use better ingredients to make the meal better quality and a high cooking level doesn't hurt either. Have the best refrigerators and stoves to cook your meals to make them better also. Continue to make your meal of choice until you're get good enough at it to make it perfect. I wouldn't worry about this trophy too much but when you make a meal yourself make sure to make the same one. This trophy requires you to make the same meal a bunch of times but once you finally make a perfect meal the trophy will pop. Traits and lifetime rewards that can help with this trophy are as follows.

-Natural Cook - Trait

For this you will need to get your cooking skill to level 10. You will also need to buy the best cooker and fridge available. Also upgrade the cooker so it improves meal quality. When making the meal try to pick the most expensive meal to make, which may help to make a perfect meal. You should obtain this after a while of playing through the game naturally anyway because you will need to make meals to keep your Sim alive and happy.
