The 'hitchhiker' is one of the family members you can choose prior to starting the game.
Once you have chosen this character you will need to complete these 3 tasks.
1. Gap, this are thin gaps in the map you can squeeze through and can find these all over the map particularly in the basement.
2. Crawl space, these are small squares on the ground you can crawl through. As above can be found all over the map.
3. Ladder, there is a ladder to the basement you can climb up/down
