How to unlock the The Light of Human Intellect achievement in The Wandering Village - Definitive Guide

This achievement is bugged at the moment (24th July), the village monument will award the Onbu monument achievement. The Survival Monument gives you the village monument achievement.

All monument achievements now unlock correctly!

I got the Village monument with the following:

120% productivity (decoration and food variation helps!)
Low trust with Onbu, damage him, extract from him for resource
Two buildings that hurt onbu - bile and blood (Don't need to be active)

I found this guide the most accurate - a few of the other guides contradict. My experience:

Intentionally kept the population below 50, that made it easy to keep a high production with just some huts, some basic decoration and food variety.

I had a couple of villages die, from both poison and starvation.

No buildings destroyed.

Onbu happiness was quite low, but he was never angry enough to damage my buildings. I had the bile and blood extractors built, both were active for only a few seconds and then deactivated. I pulled out maybe half the spikes, gradually over time.

Only 1 monument will unlock for each playthrough so I recommend making a save at day 50 to 80, and strive to get each monument from that save.

The Light of Human Intellect

Build the Villager Monument
To get this monument I recommend the following:

Have neutral to low trust with Onbu, can harvest spikes and use buildings that lower trust. I do not recommend getting to low trust, instead keep it at neutral, this way your buildings to not get destroyed by Onbu.
120% productivity or higher, easier with a lower population.
2 or more damaged buildings, I would try and get tornados/storms to do this and can use ‘Tents’ as fodder.

This was the survival monument for me as well as what others have been posting. I imagine they'll fix it (insert laugh track here). Just survive till you find the dead Onbu with sort of even stats for both the villagers and onbu.

This is misleading. Having too many buildings damaged by Onbu give you the Survival Monument. I’ve tried with low trust and production at 175% following this guide and keep getting Survival - I think there is a cap on how many destroyed buildings you can accumulate between day 0 and 100.

I was able to build the monument just after I survived for 100 straight days with minimal casualties. I'm not sure if you just have to make it to day 100 alone, or if villager deaths are taken into account. The village elder will talk to you then afterwards you can built it.

The monument does take quite a few resources to build and also takes some time to actually construct once you do have the required resources.

At about day 100 you will encounter a dead Onbu & be awarded a statue to build in your village. the statue you are awarded depends on how you played the first 100 days. After you've been given the statue you can revert to your normal playstyle. The achievement wont unlock until the Monument is actually built.

On Xbox the achievements are currently miss triggered... the Survival Monument gives village achievement (The light of human Intellect), the Village Monument gives Onbu achievement (Our Friend and Protector), & the Onbu Monument gives survival achievement.(Monumental)
The achievement mis link appears to have been fixed with the Onbu Birthday update released on 8/30/2023 patch notes for that update can be seen here...

This is what I believe the conditions are for each...

The Survival Monument
You should get by default. I've been super nice to the Onbu & abused it the entire playthrough & gotten this achievement. If this was not your first Monument count yourself as lucky & avoid the conditions below on your next playthrough.

The Onbu Monument
  • Never pull out a spike.
  • Keep his health above 90%
  • Keep his infection at or near 0
  • Keep his hunger below 25%
So you'll want to start making Mushrooms & Healshrooms & Herbs as soon as possible for food & medicine. along with the Onbu equipment, Hornblower, Kitchen, Pharmacy, & Feeding Trebuchet. I also researched the Pet Onbu ability, but I don't believe its required as the constant attention for feedings & cleansings seemed to be enough to max out his trust.
We tried to avoid as much poison as possible, running through it when we couldn't avoid it. We also tried to avoid deserts, running to avoid his feet taking heat damage in long stretches.
We also did not build any of the machines that drilled into Onbu, so no Blood Extractor, Bile Extractor, or Deep Quarry.
As a side note, we never had a building damaged on this run. Ive seen comments saying it's a requirement, but it's not.

The Village Monument
  • I believe you are required to build and use the Bile Extractor and the Blood Extractor.
  • I believe you are required to remove most of the spikes.
  • I believe Onbu can Not wag his tail before day 100
  • I don't believe you can let any buildings get damaged. (maybe 1 or 2 but we had None damaged)
  • I believe you have to have a productivity above 120%
You're going to need lots of Herbs, Mushrooms, & Healshrooms to feed & cure Onbu.
We developed a pattern of pulling out spikes, then feeding & curing Onbu to avoid him getting too angry & shaking the village. Turning on the Blood and Bile Extractors can assure that he needs a health potion most of the time, just be sure to keep an eye on them, you don't want him dying. (The blood can also be used in the kitchen to make Black Pudding, we did this as well but I don't think its required.)
We also made sure to avoid any storms that could destroy a building, having to revert to a previous save once to avoid one.
Onbus head seems to get lower & lower to the ground as it becomes less happy.
I had to replay the last 20 days of this one pulling out all but 5 of the spikes & increasing the decorations around the houses & adding more variety of foods, adding tomato & corn, but it could have been that my productivity was just below 120% as I never checked it until it was over.

General Tips
Bread & Berries feed the masses! really that's all you need, maybe throw in some Mushroom Stew or Beet Soup in a second kitchen, but that should be more than enough for these achievements.
Youre villagers don't need houses or decorations unless you're going for the Villager Monument. You can easily survive 100 days without these by having a few doctors with the Ambulance upgrade & a Decontaminator with some Biogas from the Compost Heap.
Berry Gatherers share bushes. If you have a big group of berry bushes have several gathering huts share them.
After you're awarded the monument all rules fly out the window, you can do anything you want to build it, but the achievement won't pop until it's actually built.

This game is in early access so things WILL be changing over time, the achievement guides for these 3 was a mess so this was my attempt to make it as easy & combined as possible given the current glitches.
I'm open to changing or adding to any part of this that is found to be inaccurate (or becomes inaccurate in the future) just send me a message on TA or Xbox ;-)
