This is a really easy achievement and you should get this while going for your "Nemesis" feat as you have to open the Cave of Ages in two charges to attain that.
When your fight with Ymir begins, simply throw hammers at him from a distance. The ice beams he shoots at you actually give Odinforce if you block them or get hit by them, so keep doing whirling throw for extra damage. After taking a certain amount of damage, Ymir will pound the ground and create a field of ice spikes in front of him. Throw your hammer to disrupt the spikes and run for the grapple point.
When you grapple Ymir, hit melee, melee, power attack (XXY) to do a ton of damage. Now the clincher! As Ymir falls, run back to the charging rune and finish him off with hammer throws. As soon as he disappears start charging that rune (Hold B). Because your not wasting any time moving back to the rune, you can easily get the door charged about 75% before Ymir attacks you again. Use the same tactics to quickly conclude his second reappearance, and finish charging the rune for the Nemesis feat (prevent Ymir from reforming 3 times) and the Spelunker achievement!

ok! right now im doing it on Valhallan Difficulty ,fighting Ymir at the same time trying to open the cave .This is a new tactic from me .(First)do not attack him!!! he will throw you first iceberg that give magic ,just fly and do a circle until you are in front of the door and him ,just before he will charge is beam of ice approach him very fast but not to close and do the hold (Y) or (triangle)for the lighting power(full capacity) after return back wait for the pound (unblockable)
and go far enough for the spike to come out ,run and fly fast at the yellow spot and do the (XXY) or (x2 square,triangle)
do same pattern for the second but this time only square (attack only the chest )
only difference the second ,(no spike),only ice mist,
just be sure to put Ymir close to the door ,(for less travel)
like this you dont have much to charge for the door,but the only problem its hard to avoid certain attack and loose lots of energies .
PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE....
same strategies for the second
try to avoid the ice beam laser,just try your favorit super power for him to stop doing it and to Ymir to backward to the door ,and i don't thing you will have enough magic to do that again so ..maybe on easy ,easier ?
ps:oh and i found when you complete story on easy and begin a new game plus ,load (never erase)you willl first appear on the difficulty screen ,i found that you can still have all stuff even if you do the Valhallan Difficulty for the 1st time ,not like other game you need to beat that difficulty before you can do a new game plus
i only beat easy,after i begin Valhallan with all i have finish last time

Thank you Psylent Earth! Yes, regarding the collectible, Ymir will not appear until you start to charge the gate, so you can either grab the collectible before or after the fight.

After defeating Ymir for the first time, you'll fall into a cavern with the Cave of Ages. You have to keep Ymir away from you whilst you attempt to open the Cave using Mjolnir. If you battle Ymir, you can cause him to disintegrate for a while, which gives you a reprieve in order to open the cave a little. Simply get the Cave open in under 4 minutes and you'll get this one. If you don't get it, immediately pause and quit, then continue from the main menu to try again.
