How to unlock the Speed Demon I achievement in Tomb Raider: Underworld - Definitive Guide

It's possible to get through this part of the story without getting the achievement; from the time the cutscene ends after you align the second calendar, the door to Xibalba takes just under a minute (about 55 seconds) to close, so there's a ten-second window where you can get inside but not get the achievement.

Before you align the calendar, do two things:

- Position your bike under the big hole in the wall you'll be leaving through. If you're outside the building looking at the point where you roll through the "door," the opening is just around the corner on your right. Park the motorcycle under it, and make sure it's facing outward so you don't have to turn it around when you leave.

- Save your game. That way, if you don't get the achievement, you can reload instead of going back to align the calendar again. (Some people have pointed out that the clock only counts from the first time you do it; it doesn't restart because you re-aligned the calendar. So reload and make sure every time is the "first time" you solve the puzzle.)

Now align the calendar, watch the cutscene, and high-tail it through the hole in the wall and onto your bike. It's not too hard to find your way back; just remember to turn left at the intersection and keep an eye out for the stairs leading into the ball court (also on the left). The turn into the ball court is kind of sharp, so it may help to powerslide (press and hold B while you make the turn).

You should have plenty of time as long as you don't run into too many things or fall into the pit trap. If you make it inside but don't get the achievement, chances are you were only too slow by a second or two, so reload your save and try again.

A few additional pointers:

1) You have 45 seconds. Not 55 seconds. I timed it with a stopwatch. Achievement didn't pop up, when I made it in 47 seconds.

2) Don't stay too relaxed. 3 or 4 minor bumps (or a major bike-stopping bump) and you are out.

3) Powerslides are done with the B button by default, not A, which is to brake. (I am uncertain whether you can reconfigure the buttons however). And it is compulsory to powerslide the turn into the ballcourt as you can't afford to slow down and gently turn with your left analog stick, so have some practice with it first before attempting this run.

4) Once you are inside the ball court, keep at a straight line as much as possible and don't let go of your right trigger. You stand a good chance of falling into that final pit otherwise.

I think what Jack Astro was saying is that the doors to Xibalba take about 55 seconds to close, so you can make it in without getting the achievement.

Also, as I understand it, the clock triggers the FIRST TIME you align the calendars, and doesn't start again, so you have to make it in on your first go. Saving beforehand and reloading will work of course.

Ah I see, now that I've read Jack's solution again. Thanks for pointing that out.

Would be useful to put what level this achievement is obtainable on to save people missing it,

Plus it would be useful if this guide included information like how there are two calandars you need to line up. I just raced to Xibalba to find out that nothing had changed. An update on this guide would be helpful.

Great tips. Isn't hard, but the time is little tight.

I had a hard time getting Lara to quickly jump out of the window. She would stand and stall and think about it a couple of times before she would drop. That's because I was spamming B while running toward the ledge, which is what I would do all the time in Tomb Radier: Anniversary speed runs, and it worked beautifully. Doesn't work in Underworld, though. If you press A to jump off the ledge as you're running toward it, Lara won't stall either in jumping or in landing, and she won't take any damage. This was the difference between repeated failure and easy success for me. It may be obvious to everyone else, but just in case it helps someone, here it is.
