You'll want to play through the campaign far enough to unlock the guns, cyclone special move and the aimed shot special move. Just because it's a race doesn't mean they're gonna play fair. The races are not all that hard in themselves but if you attempt this too early in the game before you've unlocked any of the above you may find some side quests a lot harder than they need to be.
