You will get this as you play through the campaign on Elite as you will be absorbing all the time to get health. To absorb an item you need to press 
when you have picked one up. Instead of causing damage with the weapon, it grants you health instead. If you haven't unlocked this by the time you complete the whole game, just go to Racebox and race, then just keep picking up items and absorbing them.
To check your progress on how many you have absorbed, go to "Options" > "Extras" > "Statistics", one of the pages shows how much you have absorbed.
