You gain skill points in by playing matches in season mode. You can access the skill point menu by choosing profile on the main menu. Simply allocate 5 points and you are away to the races! (I'd advise choosing potting first)

Once you have created your profile, press 
on “Profile” from the main menu. The fifth option down labelled “Skills” is where you will be able to access all of the available upgrades. You will be able to earn this before even playing in any season matches as you are given 10 usable skill points at the very start of the game. As you are required to spend 5 skill points, use 
and 
to spend a minimum of 5 skill points where you see fit. Once you are satisfied with your choices, hit 
and apply the changes.
