How to unlock the Competent manager achievement in WWE 2K17 - Definitive Guide

This is one of four achievements you get by playing through MyCareer mode and Virtual Currency (VC) to spend on making your character better.

The amount of VC you gain depends on how many stars you get during matches. You need a certain number of points for each half star.

Here's the amount of points you get for each type of move:

Failed reversal: -20-0
Repeat move: -10-0
Reversal: 100-300
Basic (Running, grapple, strike, corner, etc...): 120
Off the middle/top and weapons: 200 (Can use repeatedly up to a certain point)
Signature: 300 (Can use repeatedly up to a certain point)
Finisher (OMG!, regular, stolen): 400 (Can use repeatedly up to a certain point)
Barricade Breaker: 750 (Can use repeatedly up to a certain point)

You get significantly more VC for winning a match than you do for losing. You also gain significantly less VC for winning DQs and count outs.

You can also gain VC for completing the Authority's orders. Don't worry about completing them, however. They're only useful for the extra VC, so only complete the ones you can. There are orders that tell you to lose or win/lose by DQ/count out. You should avoid those because it's not worth it.

You'll get more VC if you're on NXT and have the NXT pack.

NOTE: All four achievements cost VC now. VC is a thing of the past. However, you can get far more VC than in WWE 2K16 from the matches. Not only that but you can get VC from any match in any mode, though MyCareer is still the best for grinding VC. Also, you can get VC from T-Shirt sales, though in order to keep the income up you have to change it every week. If do that by equipping a T-Shirt as an entrance attire.

Here is how much VC each manager costs:

Alexa Bliss (Heel): 28,000
Alicia Fox (Heel): 40,000
Asuka (Face): 40,000
Baylay (Face): 40,000
Becky Lynch (Face): 28,000
Brie Bella (Face): 75,000
Carmella (Face): 28,000
Charlotte (Heel): 75,000
Dana Brooke (Heel): 28,000
Emma (Heel): 28,000
Eva Marie (Heel): 40,000
Lana (Heel): 40,000
Naomi (Face): 28,000
Natalya (Heel): 40,000
Nikki Bella (Face): 75,000
Paige (Face): 75,000
Paul Heyman (Heel): Become a Heyman Guy
Sasha Banks (Face): 40,000
Summer Rae (Heel): 40,000
Tamina (Heel): 40,000

Total VC needed: 756,000 VC

Requirements

This achievement requires you to purchase all available Managers, until finally you must become a Paul Heyman Guy to complete this achievement.

For those of you familiar with the My Career mode in WWE 2K16, not a lot has changed here. And the Paul Heyman Guy Challenge is basically a replacement from the Hall of Fame challenge in 2K16. That means completing one Main Goal and three Sub Goals.

I actually got offered to be a Paul Heyman Guy after only achieving one Main Goal. I didn't need to complete a Sub Goal. Perhaps I got lucky, but I'll explain how it unfolded in case you want to follow my path.

Naturally all the other Managers require VC (Virtual Currency) - which is much easier to come by this year in 2K17.

Earning Virtual Currency to unlock Managers

You want to get 4 or 5 star matches. Cut the best Promos possible. Run In on other superstars for extra VC. And you want to maximise your T-shirt sales by changing your T-Shirt as soon as the sales begin to decline.

Earning stars during matches

For 5 star matches - I went through all my standing / running strikes, my standing / running grapples and strong grapples. Doing strong grapples outside the ring gives you extra points to your star ratings, but it does boost your aggression statistic inconsequentially. I had Attitude Adjustment and Rock Bottom as two of my strong grapples which also credited Signature Move points despite not being an actual signature move.

Exploring your basic moveset starting with strikes and then grapples is a certain way of getting to 3 star ratings. Signatures and Finishers will naturally boost your star ratings a lot.

Once you begin to unlock Skills - I recommend focusing on two OMG Moments, and then also Diving and Springboard.

Springboard moves and Middle/Top Rope Diving Moves are always useful boosts to star rating when you want to avoid move repetition.

As far as OMG Moments are concerned, the best points are awarded from Barricade Breaker and Announcers Table finishers. So I used them wisely to boost from a 4 or 4.5 star rating to a 5 star match wherever possible.

Cutting Promos

I struggled a lot with cutting a good Promo. I would often choose what seemed like the dialogue option that would earn the strongest reaction, not only for the direction of my promo, but for my Face / Heel persona, and for the audience type.

But I would often be shocked I had not chosen the strongest option at all. Once I made one bad choice, I would often get a string of bad answers and my promos would suck.

But after some time I began to notice patterns in dialogue choices and what gave me a strong reaction bonus. Paying compliments to the WWE Universe in a Family Friendly crowd were my easiest Promos.

Regardless of bad Promos - it still earns you extra VC and if you occasionally cut good promos you'll also be boosting your ranking for the Championship's division.

T-Shirt Sales

Remember to keep checking in with your T-Shirt Sales. Make your Entrance attire have a Top. If you wanna keep things simple, keep changing your Top between a T-Shirt and a Vest. I also added a 'Lettering' logo with colour on the 'Outline'.

I have no idea whether that helped me earn more VC. But being basic yet somewhat creative to ensure you're making extra VC is always a good thing. As soon as your T-Shirt sales fall low you wanna make sure to change things up.

Winning Championships

Perhaps one of the easiest Main Goals is to win all of the Championships. The only one you will not earn an achievement for is the NXT Tag Team Championship. So if you decide not to go for those titles, you will need to choose another route.

I chose to go for holding a Championship for 365 days. I didn't know which title I would go for, so I assumed it would probably be either the Intercontinental or WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

In my Career I was sent straight to the main roster, so I went for the United States Championship and won it.

Then I formed a tag team partner and won the WWE Tag Team Championship, and then I went on to win the NXT Championship.

I make the above sound quick and easy, but it takes a lot of time getting the Championships. It's a long and grinding road.

A Warning About Rivalries

Avoid starting rivalries by calling out superstars. This often landed me with a never-ending rivalry, where you can't earn any Rivalry points or finish the rivalry. The only way to end the rivalry is by changing Championship divisions.

And I can't tell you how many times I had to change Title divisions to escape never-ending rivalries, and needing to start from the bottom at Rank 10 again. Most frustrating thing I've ever experienced! Please take my warning and avoid starting rivalries!

If the game throws you into a rivalry automatically - which it will sometimes - then you will be fine.

As soon as you're Rank 3 in a Title division - you're good to create a Call Out promo targeting the Champion.

Whilst I was Rank 4 in the division, I would make sure I had attacked the Champion either during Entrance or during Post Match interviews at any given opportunity for a number of weeks. This was to make sure I had 5 out of 5 heat with them - so I knew the Champion wasn't going to no-show when I called him out.

Also if you're calling out a Champion for a rivalry in Week 3 of a month - for example - your rivalry isn't really going to kick off until the following month. But you haven't wasted your time.

Achieving a Main Goal

I won the Main Goal by holding the NXT Championship for over 365 days. This happened whilst I was trying to capture the Intercontinental Championship. It took me a painfully long time getting to Rank 3 for that division and I don't know why.

After grinding my way to winning the Intercontinental Championship, I kept hold of both NXT and IC titles and defended them for a few more successive months.

I could've switched over to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship division, but you can't hold more than one Championship whilst challenging for another. This meant I would've dropped my NXT Championship in the process of moving on to the final Championship I need to win.

Because I was only a couple more months away from the 365 day milestone it was more worthwhile to stay patient and keep my two existing straps for a little longer.

Also at the time, I thought I was going to need the three Sub Goals to become a Heyman Guy, so I wanted to defend the IC title 4 more times to finish that Sub Goal.

We now approach the closing stages of this guide, and if this helps I had switched over to a Heel during my chase for the IC Championship.

Becoming a Paul Heyman Guy

After the Main Goal of holding NXT Championship for 365 days was completed, my next Monday Night Raw was booked for a match with Brock Lesnar.

A cutscene began with Lesnar and Heyman standing in the ring, I soon realised I was actually about to be offered the Heyman Guy position.

Paul Heyman made a speech about Brock Lesnar being the Beast and my created superstar being the Next Big Thing. Eventually Heyman held out his hand and after a pause it gave me the option to Become a Paul Heyman Guy or to refuse.

I accepted the premature offer, of course!

I don't know why you would want to, but I have heard that refusing the offer to be a Paul Heyman Guy is permanent. He won't ask you again. So when the offer is made - Accept it!

Once again - I'm not sure why you wouldn't...

Popping the Achievement

I needed to visit my Managers list. All other Manageds were already unlocked, and after accepting the Heyman Guy offer - Paul Heyman had indeed unlocked and become "Purchased" on this list.

In order for the achievement to pop I needed to make Paul Heyman my active manager, and back out from the Managers list.

This is a grind of an achievement. If you are going to target this achievement - bring plenty of patience with you.

Thanks for the tip about popping the achievement. Saw he was unlocked with only the main goal completed (did the same one as you) and wasn't sure how to get it to trigger!

Becoming a Heyman guy actually wound up being pretty easy. You need 1 main goal and three sub goals. My main goals was holding the IC title for a 13 months (it wants a year but each month in game is actually 28 days, so it needs an extra month to get the goal). Once you pass that you need to drop the title for it to register. The three sub goals I had were being a three time WWE champion, a five time IC champion and a three time Royal Rumble winner. That may sound hard... but it turns out - defending the title counts as winning it again. So once you win the WHC, defend it twice and you're "a three time champion". Do the same with the IC but defend it four times, whilst you also have the option of defending the tag title twice. I was unaware of defending counting as I instantly moved divisions after winning a title.

Now you might think defending the title for a year sounds really time consuming. It's not. Once you have a title, let's say the IC title - switch to WWE title. You now skip to Smackdown. Now switch to the tag team titles. You now skip to Raw. Do this over and over until you skip a year. You do have to defend your title on each of the PPVs but 13 title matches sounds a lot easier than 117 matches, right? (9x13). This can also be done to get yourself into three Rumble. Just skip to the Rumble (make sure that you're in the WWE title division once you're in the Rumble. If you skip from World-Tag over and over you should be in the WHC division when the RR comes but if you're in the WHC the SD before you're back in the WHC, just play your match on SD to make sure you're in the WHC division by the time the Rumble comes. Then you get your WHC match at WM. Then just skip to Mania and you can win your WHC).

Once you have the 4 goals done, Heyman will call you out before your next match, in which you then become a Heyman guy and get put into a tag team with Lesnar.

As for the other managers, credit to Aspostol. They are as follows.

Alexa Bliss (Heel): 28,000
Alicia Fox (Heel): 40,000
Asuka (Face): 40,000
Baylay (Face): 40,000
Becky Lynch (Face): 28,000
Brie Bella (Face): 75,000
Carmella (Face): 28,000
Charlotte (Heel): 75,000
Dana Brooke (Heel): 28,000
Emma (Heel): 28,000
Eva Marie (Heel): 40,000
Lana (Heel): 40,000
Naomi (Face): 28,000
Natalya (Heel): 40,000
Nikki Bella (Face): 75,000
Paige (Face): 75,000
Paul Heyman (Heel): Become a Heyman Guy
Sasha Banks (Face): 40,000
Summer Rae (Heel): 40,000
Tamina (Heel): 40,000

Total VC needed: 756,000 VC

756k VC is really easy to get, especially if you're going for all the title belts. Heyman is just the time consuming one.

First off, every modern female superstar on the game is available to purchase as managers. These cost 856,000 VC to purchase them all.

Secondly, you’ll need to complete the Heyman Guy challenge to unlock Paul Heyman as a manager. You unlock them after your first main roster championship victory, and they are exactly the same as the Hall of Fame goals last year, you can complete 1 main goal or 3 sub goals to complete the challenge.

The most efficient way to complete the challenge is one of the first two main goals. The first is to hold any title for 365 days. This would increase your time in MyCareer by a year, but in this game, you can hold more than one championship at once. What you’d want to do is win your first (or any) championship, then switch to a new championship straight away. Win the new championship, but make sure you go to the next PPV in a rivalry and lose it on purpose before switching to another championship. This is because if you try to go for a third championship you get stripped of one, and you don’t want it to strip you of the one you’re trying for the 365 days with. Keep doing this until you have all of the individual championship trophies, and keep going until the counter (you can check by clicking on the challenge) surpasses 365 days. You’ll then need to lose it on purpose before the challenge completes.

The other option is to hold every championship at least once. By going for the other career trophies, the only one you’ll have left to win is the NXT Tag Team titles. Get a tag team partner and go after the last belt you need. The former is probably quicker if you aim for it from the start, but this is the fastest option if you get everything else and find you still need to do a challenge.
