How to unlock the David Beats Goliath achievement in X-Men: Destiny - Definitive Guide

David Beats Goliath

This achievement is obtained after defeating John Sublime in the mutant rescue mission. John Sublime comes in three forms as if he is confused that this isn't a Final Fantasy game.

Form 1

After watching the cutscene and John transforms you will begin battle. His first form is slow and lumbering and even on the X-treme difficulty not hard to handle. My character's power was energy projectile which probably made it easier.

John has 4 ways of attacking in this form.

1. The Ground Pound. As the name implies, John pounds the ground creating a very small shockwave around him. You needn't worry about getting hit by the shockwave itself unless you are right on top of him. The pound also makes debris fall from the ceiling which can hit you. There are no shadows to tell where it will land so dodge roll or get hit by it since the damage is low to moderate.

2. The Rock Throw. John will scoop up a rock from the ground (a bit silly since you are fighting in a lab) and throw it at you. It is very easy to dodge since the throw is not fast and the animation is long.

3. The Swipe. Should you get close to John he will take a swipe at you. Try and dodge roll to the side but at an angle towards his back because....

4. The 3 Hit Combo. The first swing is the same animation as the swipe so it is difficult to tell which he is doing which is why I suggested rolling at an angle. He takes two more swings after that both slow and a nice delay in between each one.

Hit him until his life bar goes down and you will then receive a cutscene of him changing to his second form. His second makes him run around the screen faster and able to avoid your attacks easier.

In this form he has all the same attacks as he did in the first form, but with one added.

1. The Charge. Every time you take a quarter of John's life he will try and heal himself at the generator in the middle of the room. Around the room are 4 generators that you must use by hitting the A button. You only need to activate one while he is healing for it to fry him and stop the healing process. Once he hits the ground you will have 2-3 seconds to move out of the way before he charges at you hitting the generator and making it explode. After it explodes he should be stunned and you just lay into him. After that he should go back to his first form routine. Note in this form his attacks do not get faster only his movement around the room.

After you have ate away at his life bar again John changes into his third and final form......that of the giant John Sublime. This fight plays much like most 3rd person action games with you jumping and dodging his hands and waiting for it to get stuck in the ground so you can make your move. He has 4 attacks in this form.

1. Shockwave Fist. John will slam his left fist (right side of the screen) into the ground creating a purple shockwave. All you have to do is jump to avoid it. Now the repetition of him doing this changes depending on how much life he has. At full health he will slam it down twice. The pattern should go like this: slam-jump, slam-jump. They are not two quick slams. At about two- thirds health he slams his fist three times. The pattern should be: slam-jump, slam-jump, slam-jump. When his health reaches about one quarter left he will slam his fist down five times. If you get caught by the first wave of his five fist slam each consecutive wave will hit you and you will die. There is not enough time in between waves to get off the ground without it knocking you back down. Please also take note that you can land in the ring of the shockwave and jot get hit. It only registers a hit of the outside edge catches you, so if you jump early or late and wind up landing in the middle or inside edge you will be fine.

I found the easiest way to avoid and time this attack was to position your character to the bottom left-center of the screen. His fist never impacts there and it is far enough away from the other impact zones to give you ample time to jump.

2. The Ground Punch. This is a single blow to the ground which his hand will get stuck. It is at this moment you must scale the tower generator he is hanging onto, right up the middle, and climb to the top (takes three jumps) and attack his head.

3. Laser Finger. John will use his right hand (left side of the screen) to emit a continuous laser stream that follows you around the screen as you move. You can dodge roll out of the way, but I also found that just running, without the use of RT and A, also works well and is a little more precise when trying to cut corners. John does not start using the laser until after his life is down to two-thirds.

4.The Debris Elbow. John will every rarely knock his right elbow into the wall and send debris down on top of you. I let it hit me so I was not out of position for his Shockwave Fist. It does little to moderate damage even on X-treme.

So after his Ground Punch gets his hand stuck, he just run ip to the tower generator and scale ip the middle to reach a platform to attack his head. Should take 4-5 times of this depending on your powers, x-genes, suits etc. Once he is taken down your achievement will pop and you will have another X-Men/Brotherhood decision to make.

Happy Hunting!!

Not at all. Beware, last boss is extremely cheap.

Just a heads up, he uses the laser after the first time his hand gets stuck regardless of whether or not you have hurt him. He's using it on me right now and I haven't touched him yet.

Story related and cannot be missed.

This is at the end of Mission 4: Mutant Rescue. When a cut-scene happens where Quicksilver is defeating multiple U-Men enemies at once, there will be one U-Men who'll inject a concentrated X-Gene drug into his body, thus turning into a Sublime monster with stolen mutant powers and genes.

Boss Fight - Sublime's Attacks:

  • Rock Throw: Picks up a rock off the ground and throws is at you.
  • Arm Combo: Standard combo attacks of him sling his arms around at you.
  • Fist Pound Shockwave: Slams his fist onto the ground that generates a shockwave.
  • Superhuman Speed: Runs fast across the arena.
  • Superhuman Speed Charge: With his superhuman speed he charges towards you in an attempt to crush you.
  • Double Fist Slam: Slams both fists onto the ground to create a shockwave and also causes rocks from the ceiling to fall on the ground.
Laser Beam: A concentrated laser beam of energy is shot at you.

Phase 1:
During this is phase of the battle, the Sublime's attacks will be identical towards Colossus's abilities and powers. He'll pick up and through a throw a rock you way if you’re too far away from him. It's best to dodge all of his attacks with the button, although you can block his standard arm combo attacks. Simply continue to attack him with your own standard combo attacks. Whenever he's about to slam his fist onto the ground, you should immediately dodge instead of blocking because blocking it will still inflict damage towards your health meter. You'll want to have a near full health meter that will last you into phase 3 because phase 3 is the hardest part of this battle.

Phase 2:
During this phase of the battle, the Sublime's attacks will now be identical towards Quicksilver's abilities and powers. Since he now has superhuman speed he'll be dashing across the area and will sometimes throw a rock towards you. He also now has a double fist slam attack that will generate a shockwave and will cause rocks to fall from the ceiling, which can both harm you. Simply attack him with your standard combo attacks and then dodge him whenever he fights back. This time when you reduce his health meter enough he'll dash towards the center of the field to regenerate his lost health. Whenever this happens, simply run towards a power generator in the corners of the room and press the button to disable it. He'll come charging at you with his superhuman speed and will destroy the power generators. Rinse and repeat this process over again until all power generators are destroyed and you depleted his health meter once again.

Phase 3:
This is the final phase of this battle. Hopefully you've managed to keep a large portion of your health when you fought him during phases 1 and 2. The Sublime's attacks will now be identical to Surge's abilities and powers. Since he's a giant now, you can't really attack him right away. First you'll have to dodge his shockwave attacks whenever he punches the ground. You must jump over all of his shockwave attacks by simply pressing the button. Sometime pressing both the + (hold) buttons will also help if you're about to land right into his shockwave attacks. Once you dodge them all he'll slam his fist and this time get stuck into the ground. Whenever this happens, climb onto the tower that you see in the middle of the field and once you're at the top. Start attacking his head until he breaks free from the ground. At this point of time you should immediately jump off the tower. He'll now start shooting a laser beam at you, which you can dodge just by simply running away from it. Once you evaded his laser beam he'll return back to the shockwave attacks, so rinse and repeat the jumping over shockwaves, the climbing of the tower to attack his head and he'll eventually be defeated
