This can only be done against enemies who attack with swords (not with guns). Just as they attack, press the LT. This will trigger a slow-motion animation. Press the X button during the animation, and pop!

To perform a counter move you must press the block button just before an enemy strikes you with a melee. this works on most bosses as well.

i am not sure anymore man i want to say the left trigger but you can always look by pressing start in game and looking under settings then controller configuration
