For clarification, you don't need to beat the game with all 4 characters at once (co-op), but just cumulatively beat the game with each of the 4 characters over the span of play.
You can double up if you like by using additional controllers to join in characters during the final boss fight, when he is almost dead.

That didn't work for me at all. Tried it every time I beat the game on the final boss, and it never registered.

Out of curiosity, which method did you use? I actually did this one at a time. I just assumed the last minute entry would work with this, since I know it works with other achievements.
