How to unlock the I Refuse To Die! achievement in A Hat in Time - Definitive Guide

Edit: According to LordMakanki you can keep assist mode on for the community rifts, but you will still need to obtain all pages and crown pons for the stamps.

This is easily the hardest achievement in the whole game. This achievement could take months to complete normally, however there is a workaround. If you go in the settings and turn on assist mode this will make the achievement much easier. Assist mode will give you 8 HP that regenerates when you stand in place for around 5 seconds. This makes it so you should never die as you can always regain health. This also immediately unlocks peace and tranquillity mode for all the levels the first time you play them. Peace and tranquility mode makes the death wishes much easier as it does things like give you extra time on timed levels or makes bosses easier. The most important thing about peace and tranquility mode though is that it removes bonus objectives. Bonus objectives are what makes this achievement so hard as it requires you to get through hard bosses with 1 HP in some cases. Peace and tranquility will give you all 3 stamps (completion of the level & the 2 bonus objectives) for just completing the level. Peace and tranquility does not apply to candle missions where you have to do things in non-deathwish levels. In these missions you have to actually complete the bonus objectives. Also you have to complete the community rift levels normally and do their bonus objectives. This isn't a huge issue as these are the easiest death wishes. Complete every level and get all bonus objectives and the achievement will pop.

If you need help on a specific death wish this guide from Steam user Midouri is helpful: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=17399...

I can confirm that you do not need to turn assist mode off for the community rifts. I left it on for my entire grind through this dlc! Just make sure you get all of the pons/pages. Perhaps make a note of your stamp count before and after the level and make sure it goes up by three at the end. If not, you'll probably know which of the objectives you missed.

I wasted a bit too much time trying to complete the bonuses for 'Rift Collapse: Deep Sea' (which are a pain even in assist mode) thinking that I needed those, but I guess that isn't a community one so you just get 3 stamps for completing it regardless! facepalm

The tip from @Nate1528 in the snatcher fight is a useful one. Also, don't rush to pick up the time piece after each boss in 'seal the deal' until you've let yourself fully heal. It seems that if you die and restart the stage using one of your lives, you'll have the health you entered the stage with. In the ultra snatcher fight in particular, there is no time to heal at the restart.

Yes if you use assist mode you will get all three stamps for just beating the death wish. This is important as the only way to get this achievement is to get all stamps, so this method saves time and makes it much easier. For the mafia boss fight example you would get 3 stamps for beating him instead of getting 1 for completion, 1 for the 1 hp challenge, and 1 for not missing an attack window.

Just to verify, do we need to disable assist mode when doing the community rifts?

Trombonafide you need to disable assist mode. If you look at the guide there are bolded words on how to complete this achievement

Edit: I can confirm that if you activate Assist mode part way through a Community Rift if you need to regen your health, as long as you shut it off again the extra objectives remain obtainable.

I can't imagine being able to do most of these outside of Assist mode. That last Snatcher fight was brutal even with it. On the other hand, some of the challenges hold you hand way too much in comparison.

Just a tip for the Snatcher fights. Every time he finishes an attack (preferably when you see it is ending) always dash to the well in the middle. If his next attack is his minion rush then it can't hit you if you stand as close to the edge of the well as you can. Then you have a few seconds before you have to move and can regenerate a few health bars. This works with the last "Seal the Deal" Ultra Snatcher fight as well except you have to move earlier because of the falling lights. Still, it is usually enough for regenerating 1 health.

Another way to heal during the snatcher fight, (or at least the final battle for sure) is to just not hit him when you're supposed to after he starts moving around the map throwing jars at you. He will pop out of the ground eventually and just stand there waiting for you to hit him, but you can just wait there and regain like 4 health if you're really low instead of hitting him.

For the community rifts you can still play in assist mode but you need to do the bonus objectives (collect all crowns and collect all postcards) for full stamps. Even though the objectives are hidden, progress is still given in assist mode.

Tips for the "no jump" candle.
- easiest levels to do this on - 1-1 Welcome to Mafia Town, 3-1 Contractual Obligations, 3-5 Mail Delivery Service
- if you have a more advanced controller that allows you to adjust the lengths of the triggers, I recommend to make them as short as possible. Once I did this I was easily able to do the ice hat jump dash technique required for these challenges. (LT LT RT quickly with the ice hat equipped)

How do I beat the breach of contract. I always die after 4 hits, I have assist mode on and it's still impossible.

I'm trying to understand this method. I turn on assist mode which gives me 8 health instead of 4, plus standing for 5 seconds heals you. Turns on peace and tranquility makes the death wishes easier. That part I understand as well as completing the candles and community rifts since those are non-deathwish since I completed Snatcher's hit list candles and the three Snatcher coins in Mafia Town.

But its the other part is confusing and trying to understand completing the level in peace and tranquility gives you all three stamps, example the mafia boss fight has the one hit death and never missing attack window objectives on top of the main objective which is defeat mafia boss. if I use this method I get all three stamps.

Tip: activate peace and tranquility. Follow the guide above to do so
2nd tip: get the time stop hat, it will help you. A lot, especially with the mustache girl EX, Killing two birds and mafia boss EX, except fot Snatcher EX which takes ur hat and have no powers
To get it you need to get 32 yarns to craft it, and i might be wrong but you need all other hats to craft it so (sprint, brewery, ice, the “fox” hat and ofcourse the standard hat)

For snatcher, you need to hit him 8 times to kill him.
It is the most difficult boss in the game by far for me
Tip 3: when you are fighting him, when he spawns on the ground so you can hit him. DONT. if you are on low health stop and dont hit him, youll recover by 3-4 health if you do so, if you have peace and tranquility mode on tho.
