After you've returned the crown to the Ice King, he will ask you to look out for Gunter and the other penguins on your journey. The Jeff (the name of the boat) can only carry six passengers, so you will need to make a few trips between this and the Candy Kids you'll find throughout for another sidequest.

One penguin can be found in the Candy Kingdom in an alley shortly after entering on the left.
One can be located on Gelato Island.
One is chilling behind some enemies in the Badlands.
One is near the second dock in the Evil Forest when you return to search for Fern.
One is on Firebreak Island.
Three are found on Matchbook Island near the back/rear.
Two can be found near the front of the Fire Kingdom.

Be careful on the island of fire, where three penguins are collected. If they are going to load the three with each character, check at all times that they bring them because if a character loses it, it can go unnoticed.
I thought I had a bug in the game, but no.
I never realized that I had lost one trusting me that my characters brought it and it was the last one that I was missing (one from that island)

My boat is full with penguins and candy kids, but I can't figure out how to get them off the boat. I go to the Candy kingdom but none of the kids leave.

you need to go to the docks where the quest giver is and they will automatically jump off

I’ve passed the part of returning the crown but I don’t think I ever got a quest to find any missing penguins? Am I glitched? :(

This is tied to the 'This is Gunter Take A While' sidequest, which the Ice King will give you when you return his crown (story-related). While sailing around, you will find penguins on various islands (usually near the docking point); once found, pick them up and take them to your boat to take them with you. You can only have six passengers (not counting your characters) in the boat at the same time, so keep this in mind while doing both this subquest and the candy kids one.

The treehouse is more or less in the center of the map – it's two large green hills with a bridge connecting them. Next to them is an ice cave – this is where you'll be dropping off the penguins whenever you have some to drop off.

There are 10 Gunter penguins to find:

  • 1 on Gelato Island
  • 1 in Evil Forest (right dock)
  • 1 in Candy Kingdom (after defeating Mother Varmint)
  • 1 in Badlands
  • 1 on Firebreak Island
  • 2 in the Fire Kingdom (after interrogating Cinnamon Bun)
  • 3 on Matchbook Island (after restoring core – this is the only one where the penguins aren't near the dock – all three penguins are on a small rock in the top right corner of the map)

There are 10 Gunthers to be saved after you talked with the Ice King. The side quest called "This is Gunther take awhile" will start right away. Gunther will have a glowing blue light above him to spot him easier. Once you see a Gunther, hit then take him to S.S. Jeff. You might have to back track if you've missed any.

Here is a list of there locations:

  • Gelato Island (1/10): Right where you disembark turn right he's on the beach edge.
  • Candy Kingdom (2/10): Right after the fight with Mother Varmint.
  • Evil Forest (3/10): Second dock, right when you land he's straight in front next to BMO gate.
  • Badlands (4/10): Land head right behind some bones.
  • Fire Kingdom (5, 6/10): Both can be found near start by all the fire tents.
  • Matchbook Island (7, 8, 9/10): Head towards the back of the island all three are here. Use all characters to carry them back.
  • Firebreak Island (10/10): From landing head straight past shop.

There is a bug. The quest may not appear. If there is no quest, then start the game again.

They can be assembled calmly if you dock at each island and run through it, initially I went to platinum without a guide, I collected it towards the end
