This becomes very simple after opening the Lava Caves area. There are enemies that give up to 300 xp each kill. After using this area to boost other characters to level 30 using two controllers for the "Legato" achievement my main character was level 82 without yet finishing the game.

Achievement might be delayed, mine didn't pop until I hit level 51.

You gain player experience by defeating enemies and completing quests. You should get to Level 50 while working on completing the story and all sidequests in the game, but if not you can play after the story is complete, so just head back to the second lava level and continue to kill enemies until you hit 50.
