How to unlock the The Past Laid to Rest achievement in AFRO SAMURAI - Definitive Guide

A tip for Kuma unmasked, as he is rather "easy" as long as he has his head on.

But when he lost his head he is a defense master and button mashing didn't work for me.
What works pretty good:
run around him in large circles and avoid all his attacks. Wait until he jumps into the air. As soon as he lands focus (cn_LT) and charge with cn_Y. Release cn_Y as soon as the tip of the sowrd flashed. This will hit him almost every time.

He is still difficult as he can corner you. So do your best in dodging him. Should take 8-10 hits of the charged cn_Y attack.

Also try to stay away from the tree as there is the health teddy and you may destroy it to early.

This was a bit of a pain but once you get used to the Parry ability you can get this reasonably easily (I say reasonably as it still took me a while to get it on normal difficulty - it was actually easier on hard after I got this technique down)

This level is basically split into 5 different fights against a dude with a bear head on .... fight 1 and 2 are quite simple, parry twice and then hit cn_Y three times, rinse and repeat until you get to fight 3.

Fight 3 is a 3 stage fight where you MUST parry his attacks. Stay close to him to parry then you can get a few attacks in, not too many as he will come at you hard if you go for to many hits.

Stage 1: Parry 2 attacks and hit cn_Y three times max, keep going til he says "Who am I?"
Stage 2: Parry 3 attacks and hit cn_Y three times max, keep going til he says "Who am I?"
Stage 3: Parry 4 attacks and hit cn_Y three times max, keep going until cutscene and he runs off

NOTE:
Attacks 1,2 and 3 are all the same in each stage so you can get used to the timing. Attack 1 and 2 are quite quick after eachother, you must pause for a second for attack 3 and attack 4 comes quickly after that one

You will get used to what it looks like when you successfully parry each attack, if you know you have missed one - even if he misses the first as you were too far away from him - just block as you cannot do it right unless you successfully parry all of the attacks.

Fight 4 you are in a building, for stage 1 of this just run around and avoid him popping out of the ground, no need to attack as he should just go away after a bit.
Stage 2 he will do the 4 attacks again like he did in stage 3 of the 3rd fight, do the same as before, parry 4 times and hit cn_Y three times, repeat until the cut-scene.
Sometimes in this fight he will jump and smash the ground near you, just jump out of the way of this and get close to him again.

Fight 5 is again in three stages but now you have done the parry for a while should be a little easier.

Stage 1: as before, parry 4 attacks and hit cn_Y three times, do this until you cut half of his head off
Stage 2: as before, parry 4 attacks and hit cn_Y three times, do this until you cut the other half of his head off
Stage 3: this is more of a mash-fest, get in close and hit cn_Y a lot, do an in-focus attack or two as/when you can, I didn't as I'm not the best at doing them quickly but you might be better.

After the cut-scene you should get your achievement

During the first two Kuma encounters, it will be fairly easy. They’re short battles between him and all you need to do is parry his attacks and counter back until the battle is over.

He will jump you a couple more times down the path, whenever it gets to a cut scene with him jumping out of somewhere, just block.

The third encounter with Kuma is a little bit harder than the first two. His attacks become a little bit harder to fend off and in focus attacks usually lead to Kuma countering them with his own attacks and getting behind you sometimes. Just try and follow what you did in the first two encounters, but with caution. He’s a little bit stronger now and father than the first two encounters so don’t wildly attack him because you’re open to attack then. Always remember to parry and block whenever possible.

Afterwards, he’ll run away to a wooden tower and you’ll have to follow him. In the wooden tower, he’ll burrow into the ground and pop up to attack you. Hide/lead him towards the support beams so when he pops out of the ground he’ll destroy them. After you destroyed a couple of the support beams in the room, he’ll pop out of the ground and go upstairs. Use the support beams in the room to help slow him down and attack him from behind. Use the parry when he attacks you to stun him and unleash combos when he’s stunned, but do not use in focus attacks on him. He can counter them by slashing past you and unleashing a devastating combo on your back which will take a good part of your health away.

The final fight is a little bit trickier than the others, there’s three stages to the fight.
The first two are fairly short, just use the parry technique to stun him and unleash some combos on him while he’s stunned. Throughout the fight he has an annoying dash attack that’s unblockable, look out for it while you’re fighting him.

The third stage of the fight (after you completely knock off his mask) is when he fights with only one sword. The best way to attack him and deal damage to him when his back is exposed. This is possible when he does his jumping slam, it leaves him open to attacks. Focus attacks should work on him when he has one sword, just don’t rely on it to much because he attacks fast.

While Kuma is wearing a bear mask, the only way to hit him without damaging his afro is to block his attack and then immediately deliver several strong blows ( ) and a focus attack. When he is left without a mask, run around him, when he does a jump attack, hit him with a run-up and again a few hits and a focus attack. The method is quite long, but on a high difficulty there is not much choice
