How to unlock the Freebooter achievement in Age of Booty - Definitive Guide

Strategy for Hard Challenge 7

Please note that this game is very luck based on hard, so no plan is fool proof. You may do all the below steps and still lose - the game is just cheap that way. Be prepared to rage, but keep trying, you'll get it eventually.

1. To start, upgrade your cannons once and your armour once. Lots of people say grab speed first but this never worked well for me on this map.

2. Go south and attack Nassau, the closest town. You will probably die in your attempt. Don't worry, no one usually goes to it yet. When you respawn, head back and capture it.

3. Now sit on its border, letting you and it heal. You can grab nearby crates or resources, but don't stray too far.

4. Here's the tricky part. You need to attack the town in the middle of the map (the only town with gold). But you need to choose the right opportunity. Let someone else attack it first, so when they get it, it goes down to a level 1 town instead of level 2.

Now watch whoever took over the town and wait until they're off distracted, attacking a far off base or getting attacked by others - preferably both! Now move in and take it. Stay by it's border.

5. This is the real luck based part. You have to hope that none of the AI get too smart and go up and attack Nassau, cause then you'll have to leave your post, and then someone will probably attack the gold town.

6. Let your gold and wood build. As SOON as you can, upgrade Nassau. Preferably, camp even longer and upgrade Nassau a second time.

If an enemy attacks you and they're a bit more powerful, you can either stay and fight, or leave and get back the gold town in the future. If you want to fight, a tip is to keep moving along the borders of your town - this means about 1/3rd of the time you're not fighting them. And during this 1/3rd, you're being healed and they're not. It gives you a slight advantage.

7. Once you get enough rum along with your wood, you can try to upgrade. However, this is dangerous since you'll be leaving the gold town alone. Try and wait for a moment of opportunity, when everyone is distracted. You can also move up about half way, and see what happens - if no one attacks it, keep moving. Alternatively, camp even MORE and upgrade the gold town as well.

8. Once both towns are fully upgraded, you're on the home stretch. Feel free to go up north and upgrade, but don't think your towns won't be attacked - keep an eye on them and ALWAYS turn around and head back to them as soon as they get attacked. For upgrading, I recommend grabbing +1 speed first, then +1 cannon, and keep alternating until they're maxed - then next get armors.

9. Here's the final part. Stay near the gold town and wait 'til you've got a good amount of upgrades. Wait until you have at least 4 wood and 8 gold. Try to wait far into the game, but not too late - around the 1-3 minute mark should suffice.

Choose one of the towns on the left side to attack. Whichever's owner is distracted, and whichever is a lower level. If you have a bomb, obviously use it before you attack. Take the town, and immediately upgrade it twice.

That's it - just camp this towns borders and let it heal. If you did it late enough, it won't matter if anyone attacks your towns, it's too late.

Worked well for me, I found that the AIs left Nassau & the gold town well alone once they were fully upgraded. All I had to do was camp the one town they were going for.

Got this one the first try using your solution. Thanks :)

Well, second try, cause the first try I managed to destroy the top town the minute it destroyed me. Some AI came in and capped it, and I said "eff that" and restarted. ;)

So much of this game seems to be luck in how the AI will react. Took quite a few tries. Still, this guide did help. Thanks.

I put 1 in speed and 1 in cannon at the beginning and didn't attack any towns until I upgraded my ship all but the last speed and armor. After I was upgraded I went after towns no enemies were at. Remember you don't need have all of the towns by the end just more than everyone else. If you have two and everyone else has one at the end, you win

All challenges pretty easy except this one. Well done.

My personal drill on upgrading was:
Opening: +1 armor +1 guns
Maybe upgrade Nassau now, maybe not.
Next trip: +1 guns
This makes getting Southton easier.
Next: +1 speed
Now: lvl 2 on one or both towns.
Now at 1, 1, 2. Obvs doesn't matter much now.
I like going to 1, 2, 3, then 2, 2, 3,
Finally 2, 3, 3, and maxed. Always max the ship.

First tip: fret not about attacks on the towns or even losing them. You'll take them back. That said, careful not to upgrade a town at the wrong moment, like when a 4-gun attacker is sailing in and you're not strong enough (or not there) 'cause it's a waste. Attacking tribals and merchants + going after crates is fun but also speeds your progression.

Second tip: Tend to upgrade ship before towns. When you're at 1+ Wood, 3 rum and the ticker is halfway to complete, start sailing north to upgrade just before the clock ticks over, or slightly after. By mid-game you're easily taking back towns or arriving in time to save them (always fun!).

Final phase, and you'll get here repeatedly: Don't worry too much about where Nassau and Southton are upgrade-wise. Just +1 them as you can. You need to have firm control of both and have ship maxed now.

At the two minute warning, you're thinking about the final assault. The goal is to hit either Tortuga (to the right) or Memphis to the left, (either is close, often both are lvl1) and have all three towns by 1:00 or so. Timing will vary, figure out what's too early or too late. Choices: if one of the players controlling one of these towns is at 3 on the scoreboard, probably hit that player's town to boost you to the only 3 (else you'll stalemate or lose).

After you get your third town, you might have time/money to upgrade it. It's your call where to be between the three but almost surely someone is bearing down on one of these, so stay frosty and defend. With luck you're the only player at 3 when the clock runs out!

Almost worked first time for me, but both my fully maxed towns (Nassau and the gold town Southorn?) was smashed to pieces with 30 seconds to go while I was capturing my 4th town. I re-tried using the same method four times, and was unable to win.

I think eventually it all points down to luck.

I managed to win 2-1-1-1-0 in the end, having upgraded Nassau only once, and focusing on upgrading my ship to max. I camped at one corner while the enemies kept bombing each other, exchanging towns and leads all the time. Strangely, the enemies never attempted to take Nassau at all throughout, so I always had one town with me.

With about 30 seconds left, I went for a town that belonged to the team leading 2-1-1-1-0, knowing that if I capture it, I'd be leading without much time remaining. I was lucky as they didn't upgrade it at all, giving me an easy capture. Once I got it, I was leading 2-1-1-1-0, and three enemies swarmed me immediately! I defended the last 10 seconds while healing at that new town (that was when my fully upgraded armor and cannon pulled me through), and roared in victory when time was out, waking up my girlfriend in the process (it was 1:30am).

The solution is well written and should work for a handsome victory if luck is on your side though, so I'm +ve it anyway. :)

I used these tactics for the final level and most of the other ones as well, and SAILED through the game :D

-Firstly, I nearly always upgrade speed straight away. Then you can focus on sailing around the map and gaining resources, helping you to upgrade the rest of your ship quicker.

-Then once your ship is fully upgraded, you should by now have a lot of coins. Just go up to the town nearest your base and take it over in seconds. (save any bombs etc. for the next town you attack).

-Then once you have your first town, focus on upgrading it all the way, you'll find that they don't usually bother to attack it once it's upgraded fully.

-I then gathered more resources and repeated with the next town and so on, upgrading it fully so it doesn't get attacked, and avoiding any fights with ships unless to protect a town from being captured.

I found this tactic to be almost foolproof on all the other levels as well. I'm not sure why the enemy doesn't bother attacking your towns when they are fully upgraded but I had three on the go and the comp was fighting it out on the other towns and ignoring these.

Err. I initially came here and left a comment to the effect of "this doesn't work", but retracted it and decided to give it more time. Now I'm back, and the verdict is the same.

The enemy AI has absolutely no qualms attacking a fully upgraded town. And the friendly AI has no qualms about helping themselves to ship upgrades from materials you were concentrating on collecting while the enemy was gleefully capturing bases without a care in the world.

Strange how on my game the AI left any fully upgraded towns completely alone. I was mainly describing the final level in the solution though. What level are you on? I don't think this solution would work for every level, as some AI behaves very differently on the other levels.

I use a similar strategy but I'm stomped at 3-3. A speed ship doesn't work (not enough rum), a cannon ship doesn't work (too slow) and the partner AI is incredibly annoying at this stage.

Got some input? Cheers!

Err, hey. Sorry for the late response. In answer to your question, Doomed Satsuma, the AI pretty consistently behaved like this in all levels, particularly the part about not caring a single bit about fully upgraded towns. I was eventually able to progress through most of the game, often by the skin of my teeth.

I'm stuck on the last levels for Medium and Hard and have just given up. The game is ridiculously cheap and ruthless. Just makes it so unenjoyable.

Tried 3 times and failed. Upgrading speed twice before anything and just collecting everything totally worked first try was really surprised. Got all 4 towns too. Great job!

As an addition to the other guides here, the only other mission I had difficulty with was mission 3 (Spork). I finally did it like this:

1. Start by upgrading +1 to cannons and +1 to armor.

2. Take the town in the south west. Your team mates are probably already on the way to doing this.

3. Heal up and take the town slightly north of your base.

4. Now heal up and start taking the three northernmost towns. The one at the very north is your priority, it’s the main source of wood on the whole map, so you should set the enemy back quite a bit by starving them of upgrades.

5. By the time you have all three northern towns under control, you’ll probably have lost the first one or two towns you took. Your team mates will be trying their best to prevent the orange tide, but it’s 2 vs 4 and they will eventually be overcome. Heal up, upgrade the northern towns if you have enough resources and grab any ship upgrades that may have accumulated (unlikely, as you’ll have lost your only rum producing town).

6. Decide which is easier – either attempt to take back your towns or go for the two enemy occupied towns. If you’re quick, you should be able to be in possession of 5 towns at once, thus winning the game.

You should avoid sitting this one out until the timer ends as the other team *will* get stronger – try and end it as soon as possible. Concentrate on starving them of resources, wood first, then rum. It may require a few tries, but it isn’t as bad at hard 7 and medium 7.

-----

For the record, in case it helps anybody: when I completed hard 7, I used SingleMomOfTwo’s guide and ended up taking the 3 towns that run down the centre of the map.

-----

One other little tip I haven't seen anywhere else - if you have a large map and a slow ship (like mission 4), you can use the whirlpool curse on yourself which will usually transport you to the other side of the map instantly. You can't guarantee where you’ll end up, but it’ll usually be closer than where you started.

To win the last level, you should go for speed upgrades first and then collect enough crates/sink bonus boats to start with a bunch of resources, don't worry about enemies at first, get your supplies, improve your boat (max speed + some defence and cannons) then go get your first town.

Protect it until you've got enough resources to max it out then take another one (if you took the northern wood/barrel, go for the 2 gold one south) and do the same.Once your 2 main towns are maxed out there should be 1 dot enemies towns near, get them quickly and you're done.

My Strategy Guide to being completely awesome!!!
Throughout playing Age of Booty I found that it is very important to keep moving no matter what

For this achievement you will have to complete all of the 7 Hard challenges
(3rd star) ***
1) The first thing I did on every map was look at all the locations and try to see which ones would be the best to take for upgrades and town upgrades.
Try to grab the towns that have multiple mining options I.E. Gold and Trees or double resources

2) Restart the level so you can get the jump on where you want to go

3) I always upgraded my ships cannons and speed by one (Most levels give you two upgrades to start with) I normally do cannons two then armor then speed 2 then armor 2 speed 3 cannon 3 armor 3
Never fully upgrade Cannons or Armor if you haven't fully upgraded the speed because you will be going slower than Davey's locker

4) In the beginning I always let the AI teammate just go do what he wants because for the most part he'll protect and attack

5) I like to attack the bases in the middle in the beginning because those can be hard to recapture if you upgrade them

6) NEVER upgrade while your base is being attacked it will get destroyed fast

7) when attacking a base or a ship keep your ship moving at all time you will avoid getting shot this way

8) To quickly take a town place a bomb powerup next to the town so that you can get a good start on taking down the town.

9) Focus on your upgrades as much as you can (once you get them use them the AI will use them but really one good ship is way better in my oppinion USE the upgrades as soon as possible so you dont get monkeyed out of resources)

10) Most of the time when an enemy is attacking your base if your show up and take the space next to him and besides the base the enemy will retreat.
****When your up against your base your health regenerates slowly but efficiently****

11) Try not to die as you lose your resources

12) Attack the little ships (The bombs are way worth it) and islands with resources that your lacking PICK up floating crates as well

13) Cherry Pick towns (Let enemies destroy most a base then swoop in for the take over)

If anyone would like to add some tips or pointers to my solution just leave a comment :D Good luck

There are seven challenges on each difficulty. You can do them in any order you want. You don't have to meet the conditions of "Capture X number of towns in Y minutes". You just need to have the most number of captured towns when time expires.

The final challenge on Hard is pretty difficult and a lot of people have trouble beating it. Chucknorris078 posted an excellent strategy for beating this challenge. I recommend taking a look at this thread and reading through some of the tips that are offered there: LINK

0
0

Beat all the challenges on hard. There are seven challenges you need to beat for this, and they will show a silver star jewel when completed.

Many hard challenges also come with a time limit. If you capture the required number of towns before the time runs out you win instantly. If you get to the end of the time limit and you have the most towns, you win. If you are tied on towns with another player it is a stalemate and doesn't count as a win.

So this part of the guide doesn't look cluttered, see below for more advice on beating the final hard challenge.

0
0
Complete all challenging missions. There are a total of seven tasks in the game that you need to complete for this trophy. Once completed they will be marked with a silver star.
The main difficulty of such tasks is that almost all of them have a time limit. If you capture the required number of cities during such missions, you get victory. If you don't meet the deadline, you will need to capture most of the cities on the map to win.
