How to unlock the Fighting From Afar achievement in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide

Set up a Standard Game with the following settings:
  • Change your Civilization to Britons
  • Game Mode: Regicide
  • Click Yes to Regicide Rules
  • Resources: Infinite
  • Population: 500
  • Starting Age: Castle Age
Using the 10 villagers you start with Place down around 10 castles then start placing down lots of houses (Double press Q with villagers selected to fast select)

Click on the Castle, hold down Shift and click on Recruit Longbowman 3 times - you can only queue 15 per castle at a time.

Either set the rally point of the castles in the enemies base or collect them for one massive assault later on.

Once you've hit 500 created in 1 game the achievement will pop.
(doesn't need to be 500 all at once)

You will also unlock the following if you win the game:
Age of Empires II: Definitive EditionBriton VictoryThe Briton Victory achievement in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition worth 12 pointsWin a game playing as the Britons.

Age of Empires II: Definitive EditionThe King Is Dead, Long Live the King! The The King Is Dead, Long Live the King! achievement in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition worth 19 pointsWin a Regicide game.

and this one if you delete your Town Centre before killing their King

Took longer than expected but I'll admit I got distracted due to accidentally having the difficulty up higher and getting rushed by Persian War Elephants and Ballistae. Safe to say my longbowmen were busy (and just every so slightly outmatched.) Thanks for the guide!

Even after deleting all villagers, have to keep the king in a regicide match. That makes only 499 longbowmen. Can't complete in regicide mode. How to do it without regicide?

As of 5/7/2023 the above solution does not appear to work for regicide, or else the achievement is bugged. Created 500 longbowmen and deleted all villagers and scout units. Sent the longbowmen to attack the enemy player who was easily defeated. No achievement for fighting from afar.

Edit: it appears that you must unlock the achievement in a random map and conquest game. Also, make sure to disable cheat codes and do NOT have a treaty. The achievement finally unlocked for me with those options selected. Building only castles will work in substitution of building houses.

Some stuff to add:

-You will need to build 95houses in order to reach the capacity needed for 500 population

-When making the Longbowmen you can hold down the Q key instead of clicking

-Pressing DELETE on the keyboard will kill a friendly unit/building, use this if you need to or send some of your troops to their doom

-This will pop during the match. No need to complete it.

-TA user Spay001 suggests below that you set the game mode to TURBO speed to greatly speed things up

-You can create more villagers via the Town Center building, you might want to do that in order to speed up the creation of houses. You can then select them all and hit DELETE on the keyboard to kill them, if you need to free up space for more archers.

Just to add to the guide above:
"Set up a Standard Game with the following settings:
Change your Civilization to Britons
Game Mode: Regicide
Click Yes to Regicide Rules
Resources: Infinite
Population: 500
Starting Age: Castle Age"
Turbo mode: on

It will greatly speed up the process.

Start up a random map as Britons with infinite resources and 500 pop limit in post-imperial. Build a couple houses then another TC or two and train lots of vills. Use them to build castles until you unlock the pop limit. Delete all the vills and train longbows up to your pop limit and it will unlock.

Longbowmen are the unique infantry of the Britons. Start a random map game with the following settings:

  • Civilization - Britons
  • Post Imperial Age start
  • Infinite Resources
  • Turbo Mode On
As soon as the game starts set your villagers building castles, once the first castle is built start spamming out Longbowmen, if you hit your population cap then select the longbowmen and press Shift + Delete to kill them all at once. Should unlock quickly once you have enough castles building men.
