How to unlock the Roar Like a Lion achievement in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide

Initial
1. Send some initial builders straight to the stone and gold.
2. Build villagers to get wood/food on the island and land base.
3. Build a university to research Chemistry.
4. Research Cannon Galleons, you are aiming to build 30x war galleys and 8 Cannon Galleons and set rally point to the bottom most southern corner.
5. Immediately send your initial land troops and a villager to the red set of two conveniently placed walls. Build a castle and initial walls, once you have enough stone build a second castle and a maze of gates as per the image below. Fill the gap with Gbeto warriors to go and clean up any trebuchets and bombard cannons that seek to ruin your castles.

Naval Assault
1. Always keep an eye on your castle blockade as the enemy can overwhelm you at any time, sending 20-50 Champions and Cavaliers. (I rebuilt the gates atleast 20 times)
2. Once you have gathered your 30 war galleys and 8 cannon galleons, wait for the red team naval onslaught. After they have lost their 30+ galleys to your watch towers, send your naval army in and focus on destroying their docks. (Pro tip for the pesky fortified towers, use your war galleys as a meat shield whilst your cannon galleons destroy the towers. (Kill the orange onagers and arbalest that are shoreside)
3. Once all their docks are cleared, destroy all the buildings you can reach with your cannon galleons.

Destroying the Wonder
1. Fill two transport ships with 40 cavaliers to use as bait.
2. Fill the third transport ship with 5 trebuchets, (RESEARCH SIEGE ENGINEERS)
3. Leave your landing party waiting just off the beach head you have created outside their shore base.
4. Once red sends an enormous army of infantry/cavalry into your castle fort on land, this is the time to STRIKE.
5. Unleash your cavaliers and get them to attack anything red (so they have the agro) whilst setting up your trebuchets to shoot the wonder, you will definitely need to save here to work out the exact way you will need to spread out your cavaliers to keep the red ant swarm off your trebuchets.
6. Use your remaining navy to destroy all the towers on the islands and claim the gold/stone for yourself.

End Game
1. Now that the wonder is down you can sit back and watch as the AI runs out of resources and begins to just send pikemen to your walls.
2. Start creating a horde of at least 60-80 Elite Gbeto Warriors and 5 more trebuchets.
3. Land them at the beach head as below and put the warriors on stand ground to defend your trebuchets vs anything as red/orange do not create/have any ranged units at this point.

4. Progressively destroy their base and kill Sumanguru as you go along.

Haha no worries, I'm playing through all the campaigns on hard myself. Just figured it might be easier than spending resources on a navy and fiddling with transport ships is all. I think the micro would be tougher than the way I did it. laugh

I built 5 castles. One opposite your island dock on the rock outcrop as it is the perfect size, replacing the tower. The other 4 were in a straight line barrier some way back from the bridge, near the north gold mine. In front of those I built a zig-zag queue out of wood, so the enemy would have walk back and forth past the castles 3 times to get to them. If you build a gate they will attack your walls as they cannot find a path. I put 10 people with guns in each of the castles.

My strategy to take out the Wonder was pretty much the same as yours.

I do like the zigzag method and use it regularly myself but I just found I couldn't kill all the enemies when there was a pack of 50+ heavy units, some would trickle through. I'm glad it worked for you, it would've taken some set up!

This was a great solution, bvrgvndy! I was able to get the achievement at the first attempt thanks to you. :)

Like HolyHalfDead, I put ranged units into the two castles near the walls in the north, and with 20 Arbalesters in each and some Gbetos in front, the enemy never managed to knock down the gates (although they did knock down one Castle when I was occupied with a battle near their coast).

One correction: I started with Heated Shot so only needed to research Chemistry. And one addition: they will send Villagers to rebuild docks so it's a good idea to have a bunch of War Galleys or Cannon Galleons near the shore to prevent them from rebuilding a navy once you've taken control of the seas.

Thanks again bvrgvndy!

An easier method is to mass stone right at the start then drop two quick castles in a line near the enemy "bridge" and a 3rd castle with those sometime after. You can virtually ignore the navy aspect altogether.

Then it's just a matter of massing Elite Gbeto Warriors with 7-10 Trebs, then save your game and bulldog your way through the enemy's front door. The only real threat are the trapped Onagers so use your Trebs to take them and the towers out first.

Yes my friend did it that way @Lockie, he used bombard cannons plus gbetos and went through the front, but he is a micro boss which I am not haha. The navy beach head method is just an easier way to cheese the wonder and then outlast the opponent.

I normally only play on standard difficulty so for this achievement I was really scared that it would be too hard. But the building two castles near the bridge and just killing everything from the sea made it kind of feel easy.

Excellent very complete guide; I would add in the section on the destruction of wonder of 5> 6 trebuchets in case you have little time left and you have passed the moment when the red army was out; Likewise, the market is important in this situation, I sold all the wood reserve to try to create all the possible cavalry, without a doubt it is the achievement that has cost me the most so far, almost as much as the castles in Alaric's campaign.

Yep it still works in 2022. It’s all about a coordinated zerg rush to out muscle their fleet, then use that gap to snipe their wonder. You can then take your sweet time.

Great guide and good challenge. Couldn’t hold the bridge but I was able to hold the infantry waves at a rear base with a few castles, which was easy once the cannon galleons stopped as I could never gain naval superiority.

Managed to get the wonder with my last trebuchet shot, after that just brute forced the base over land (again, no naval superiority) honestly have never felt more vindicated than when my gbetos started mowing down his villagers…

It was not too hard and not very different when I played on easy.
I boomed the economy to be able to hold on against War Ships with my Fast Fire Ships and that pesky towers (it would be an onslaught if it was Galleons vs Fire Ships, thanks devs for the nerf)
Walled the ''bridge'' and hold off any enemy transports. After conquering the water, it become much easier. Killed more than 1000 and only lost 140.

And this scenario used to be very hard on HD on it's launch...

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition (PC) - Achievement - Roar Like a Lion

Win the fifth Sundjata mission "The Lion's Den" on Hard difficulty.

Some missions can be pretty challenging for your average gamer on hard mode, but this ones not actually that bad. It's important to make a choke-point early on outside the enemy base - build walls and a castle(s) when you get to a narrow passageway where you can see the enemy has a tunnel of walls on either side (You get here by following the land North-West from your main base and then South-West). This stops them from expanding early on and taking the gold / stone that's on the land between you and them. On a side note, there are also gold and stone stockpiles on a few islands around the map.
I found it best to attack via land and sea. Set up your land choke-point, then build a University and research Chemistry so you can get Cannon Galleons to bombard any enemy structures you can and clear out the enemy buildings on the islands containing gold and stone. Build a few Fast Fire Ships to go with them to protect them from enemy Galleons.
Once you've dominated the sea, go back to pushing your land attack. I found it best to combine Trebuchets with Elite Gbeto Warriors for protection. It can be a bit tedious getting in to the enemy camp as it's protected by two layers of walls with Trebuchets and Onagers inside the wall as well as towers, but you should have enough villagers on resources at this point to pump units out and overwhelm them.
It's likely that the enemy will also start constructing a Wonder at some point - Make sure you are doing everything as fast as you can to stop the enemy achieving a Wonder Victory and you should be fine.

Thanks for your solution, I'm trying to follow it but not sure what's going wrong here. Every time I start the mission the first wave of enemy ships are not attacking my towers, they are heading north and attacking the wall I build around the bottleneck. They end up out of range of the castle (which finishes just as they arrive), and I have to send my galleons up to attack, which ends badly. Should I be waiting before they attack to build the bottleneck?

I never had that problem to be honest. Is that on easy difficulty?

Thanks for the helpful guide, with commentary at the start as well :)
I'm new to AoE2 as well as playing on keyboard and mouse, I've been playing the story on standard difficulty on casual speed. I've won 0 out of 9 games in ranked play but this guide was so helpful. It was really good only needing to focus on 2 units (Hand Cannons / Trebs) - I failed using the top-rated guide as well as this one, but on my third attempt I put sticky notes on my monitor of your eco distribution as well as what upgrades were needed and I pulled through! Woo hoo! Thanks :)

As you would expect from the difficulty level, this can be quite hard and you will need to be quick. As soon as it starts you will want to boom your economy. The enemy will be aggressive and you will likely want a land army and a navy. For your land army, Gbeto warriors are cavalry can be good, though be warned the enemy will counter. It's also useful to back these up with a group of monks to keep them alive as resources will become scarce later in the game. Finally, have some trebuchets for siege, especially gold and stone. For the navy you will want some fast fire ships and cannon galleons, shortly into the game the enemy will build a wonder, at this stage you'll want to take a couple of transport ships of troops and your navy to them, but be warned of the towers in the sea they can be deadly. Use your navy to attack the enemy base from the south, taking out their towers and docks with your cannon galleons, while countering their war galleys with your fire ships. Then land your army where their destroyed docks are, take some trebuchets to hit the wonder and your army to defend.

After the wonder is destroyed, take out as much as the enemy base as you can as they wont really rebuild but take note that it will be a long hard slog of defending until they run out of resources, if you can take out all their docks, you can control the sea with the extra gold. also note there is gold and stone to the north that they will mine if you are not quick, it may be worth taking these early on and saving the gold in your base until later.
