How to unlock the The Old-fashioned Way achievement in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide
Playing on standard difficulty:
You can win by fulfilling one of these two conditions:
- Capturing the 10 marked enemy castles
OR
- Defeating Grey the grey army that arrives after quite some time
Though capturing castles is relatively easy (poorly defended, just build some units + rams), I think it might be shorter to wait for Grey instead of trying to get all ten castles, I don't know.
Grey will attack with a good army and if you defeat them, you win the game.
For reference, when they attacked, I had only destroyed 4/10 castles, but I was playing at a slow pace, taking a long time building my economy.
Their army consists of cavalry and crossbowmen. You have more than enough time to prepare for their attack by producing and upgrading a lot of pykemen and horsemen. Pykemen are really good because their horsemen are strong and numerous. Your cavalry will take care of the crossbowmen.
They'll arrive by boat and land at your starting base. I wasn't prepared at all when they attacked and still managed to defeat them so if you are prepared with the correct units that will not be an issue.
Remember though, if they destroy the Tower of London, you lose.
After grey is defeated, you can select the Tower of London and achieve victory from there (by selecting the corresponding technology).
Of course, while you wait for them you should capture some castles, that will allow you to produce Knights and it gives you access to more relics (for gold revenue). You'll need gold to get units and upgrades for Grey's attack.
Anyway, when I won, I checked the map and the other 6 castles I hadn't captured were still not heavily guarded so if you decide to capture them, it won't be difficult either. Spam knights and rams.
GL! It's not a difficult one.

Definitely quicker to capture the 3 closest castles then start to prep your defences. When you start there's a relic to the south, one to the east of the Tower and another to the south east past the castle, which was the first one I captured. When your other force lands move north to find two villagers, get them to build a monastery then capture two more relics to the south. This should give you a steady flow of gold.
I also built a number of towers by the river for when grey attacks. He seems to land the first two boats before your outermost one, but he will try and send some further up the river which you can manually target (since they're tagged as neutral) and sink them, instantly reducing the number of enemies you need to fight.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I did all the objectives, but when i click on the tower of london, the option isnt there. I currently can't finish the mission. I'm playing on xbox series x. The wheel with all the units and tech that shows when you hold RT just isn't there.
