How to unlock the Master of the Mongols achievement in Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition - Definitive Guide
To complete the Mongols Mastery, you have to complete 15 challenges whilst using this faction. These must be completed in order and you cannot advance to the next until the previous is complete. They will generally be based around the use of a local unit or ability and are generally self-explanatory, however, I will provide a few generic tips for the challenges first and the specific tips at the end of the solution;
- The game does not provide a tracker in the match as to how your progress is going so it's a bit of a guess as to when it will be completed. Check between games if needed.
- You can easily cheese a lot of the challenges by jumping straight into the correct Age from the custom games menu and doing the relevant task with the starting supplies.
- Setting the game up with NO A.I. allows you to peacefully develop towards certain challenges and have no enemies.
- Once you think you've completed the challenge, simply surrender the match, there's no need to win or wait to be defeated (unless the challenge is test of strength, in which you have to win against the A.I.).
- Achievement should pop right after the last challenge, for me that was in the score screen.
--------------------------------------
The Masteries menu can be found from the main single-player menu, then selecting the relevant Mastery. The challenges are as follows:
Challenge 1: Kettle and Smoke
Use the Improved Production ability to produce 6 Villages before the Feudal Age (II).
Challenge 2: Superior Mobility
Defeat 5 enemies with cavalry before the Feudal Age (II).
Challenge 3: Test of Strength I
Win a 1v1 Custom or Skirmish match against the Easy A.I.
Challenge 4: Vacant Steppes
Produce 30 Sheep from Pastures that are influenced by an Ovoo.
Challenge 5: Fire and Stone
Accrue 500 Stone by igniting enemy buildings.
Challenge 6: Burnt Offerings
Produce 40 cavalry units using improved production buildings influenced by an Ovoo.
Challenge 7: Test of Strength II
Win a 1v1 Custom or Skirmish match against the Intermediate A.I.
Challenge 8: The Silk Road
Construct the Silver Tree Landmark and 5 outposts. Gain the Yam speed aura 40 times with your Traders.
Challenge 9: A Great Assembly
Construct the Kurultai and heal 500 health on your units via the Kurultai.
Challenge 10: Wolves and Rain
Research the Yam Network, then defeat 30 enemies with your troops unit affected by the Yam speed aura.
Challenge 11: Test of Strength III
Win a 1v1 Custom or Skirmish match against the Hard A.I.
Challenge 12: Whistling Arrows
Defeat 50 enemies with units affected by the Khan's Signal Arrows. Do not lose your Khan during the match.
Challenge 13: The Heavy Load
Accrue 2,000 Stone using your Traders.
Challenge 14: Horn and Sinew
Research the Improved Siha Bow Limbs technology, then defeat 40 enemies with Mangudai, and achieve a Landmarks Victory.
Challenge 15: Test of Strength IV
Win a 1v1 Custom or Skirmish match against the Hardest A.I.
--------------------------------------
Challenge 1: Kettle and Smoke
Start in Age (I), build an Ovoo (can only be build on stone). Put your Town Center in the range of the Ovoo. Train 6 villagers from the special menu that allows you to build two units at the same time, at the same speed but they cost more resources to produce. Not sure if you need to go to the Feudal Age (II), just to be sure, after you've trained the 6 villagers go to the Feudal Age (II), and then surrender after reaching the Feudal Age (II).
Challenge 2: Superior Mobility
Play against an A.I., difficulty doesn't matter. Do as challenge 1, but build stables around the Ovoo now, then just build a lot of cavalry units and kill enemy units.
Challenge 4: Vacant Steppes
Start in Age (IV). Build Pastures around the Ovoo and just wait until you have 30 Sheep before surrendering.
Challenge 5: Fire and Stone
Play against an A.I., difficulty doesn't matter. Start in Age (IV). Build an Ovoo, research Stone Bounty. Now build a lot of stables around it and produce a lot of cavalry units and burn up 4 enemy buildings. You get 125 stone when you've researched: Stone Bounty.
Challenge 6: Burnt Offerings
Do as challenge two, no need to play against an A.I., just train 40 cavalry units, two at a time and when you've trained 40 just surrender.
Challenge 8: The Silk Road
Start in Age (I), go to Age (II) by building the Silver Tree. Once that is done, train a lot of Traders and send them to a neutral market. Now build 5 Outposts along the trade route and let them overlap. Now go to Age (III) and research the Yam Network in an Outpost. To speed up the process now build a lot more markets and spam out traders. There sadly is no way to check how many times the Yam speed has been applied. I just build over 40 traders and then I surrendered to make sure the Yam speed was applied at least 40 times.
Challenge 9: A Great Assembly
Start in Age (II), this can be done with or without A.I. build the Kurultai building to advance to the next Age (III). Put Khan (this is a special unit your starting scout), next to the Kurultai. Now build a more multiple stables. Send out cavalry units and let them get damage, either from the enemy A.I. units/buildings or by wild animals (Wolves/Boar). Once your units are damaged send them to the Kurultai building where Khan will heal your damaged units back to full health. Now repeat this process until you've healed 500 health.
I build 10 Early Horseman. They take 3 dmg when attacked by a wolf (pulling two wolves together speeds up the process of taking dmg). Now let the wolf attack you (just run around DON'T ATTACK/KILL THE WOLF) until you have 49 HP left. Send him back to the Kurultai and send over another horseman. This way you can keep track of how many you've send and also how much HP you've healed. After the tenth horseman has been fully healed surrender.
Challenge 10: Wolves and Rain
Play against an A.I., difficulty doesn't matter. Start in Age (IV). Build Outposts where you think the enemy will start attacking you from. Research the Yam Network in the Outpost. Now build which ever army units you want and defeat enemies will in the range of the Outpost so the Yam speed aura applies.
Challenge 13: The Heavy Load
Start Age (IV), no A.I. build a lot of markets and Outpost along the trade route to a neutral market. Research the Yam Network in the Outpost to speed up your traders and research the Stone Commerce in the Market which allows traders to also generate Stone from trading.
Challenge 14: Horn and Sinew
Play against an A.I., difficulty doesn't matter (although I suggest playing against at least Hard or even Hardest, because that A.I. builds way more units for you to kill). Start in Age (IV). Build an Ovoo, build Archery ranges around it. Research the Improved Siha Bow Limbs technology, now spam out Mangudai and kill as many enemy units as you can, at least 40 (no way to track it). And then kill all their Landmarks, which should only be their Town Center if you started in Age (IV).

Tip for 9: Train scouts and hit delete, they won't die but their HP will go to 1.
