The Malians have a unique building available called the pit mine. It is available from Age 1 (Dark Age) and you can build 1 for each age you progress through (Age IV you can build 4). You then need to build these on top of a gold mine and it will automatically extract the gold from that mine for you. Each time the coutner ticks up for collecting gold it will count once towards this achievement.
You can increase the amount of gold produced from the mine by building houses or mining camps around the area of influence of the pit mine but this doesn't speed up the rate at which it collects the gold only the amount.
Each pit collects once every 10 seconds irrespective of number of houses/camps around it. So if you have all 4 working that is 24 collections a minute, which works out just under 42 minutes for the achievement requirements to be met..
The Mansa Quarry you can build when you upgrade from Age I to Age II, does not seem to give any progress on this despite it looking like an open pit mine and producing gold.
The tracker does move for this achievement, however like everything else in this game it might be somewhat delayed and the achievement may take longer than expected to pop.
