How to unlock the Sole Survivor achievement in AirMech Arena - Definitive Guide
Equip the following Units: Lunchbox, Ratchet and T99 (Optiona: Booster, Read the Solution for Boosted In AirMech Arena for more Info). Then go to Solo -> Survival -> choose the first Map called Survival. Now use the following build/place order and the game should be easy to win with ~90% HP left.
- 3x T99 at NW Bridge
- 3x T99 at NE Bridge
- 4x Lunchbox
- (optional) one Booster
- one Ratchet at every Bridge
- 3x T99 at SW Bridge
- 3x T99 at SE Bridge
- one Ratchet at every Bridge
- keep enforcing the Bridges with up to 6-8 T99
- at Wave 5-6 you should start building ~ 6 T99 + one Ratchet at every canyon and place them in the Chokepoint as shown in the Screenshot below
Things you need to buy with diamonds for this:
Ultimate Samson(Around 600 Diamonds?)
Ultimate Fuel(I got mine for just under 5000 Diamonds EDIT: I've seen these much cheaper down to 3500 Diamonds)
Ultimate Bucky(less than 500 Diamonds?)
You get 7500 Diamonds with the Starter Pack, so that's plenty to get all those ultimates, and have more left over to get the rest of the grindy achievements easier.
Now, to do the achievement--go to Solo, Survival, pick any AirMech, make sure to equip Ultimate Samson, Ultimate Fuel, and Ultimate Bucky by choosing the category with your then or to choose further. (equip Boost if you want that achievement)
Once you have your gear equipped, select the map Crossroads, and to start!
Your target here is to fill every land bridge with Buckys, and every canyon with Buckys as well in the very narrow points. Keep Building Buckys through the waves up to 140+ scattered between the 8 defense points.
Make sure to start with Buckys on the NW bridge, then NE and SW bridges, finally the SE bridge. I put 3 in each location first, then started building those groups up to ~15 each. Try to build and drop Buckys into the piles so that they break down all the fences too! (EDIT: You can shoot these with your AirMech, can be faster if you have the time)
That lets them crossfire at the incoming enemies and helps a lot! Once I had about 15 in each spot, I filled the canyon chokepoints with a few Buckys scattered on the ridges.
Optional: build Honeymakers on the 4 base build points; and 4-8 Hero units to repair your Bucky armies(try to place them behind the army so they aren't targeted first thing when the enemy shows up!)
Optional Achievements: reach level 10 without buying any abilities and winning(I got bored with all the money and kept upgrading my AirMech every time so this took me a while LOL), reach level 15 in a match, not killing any units with your AirMech, and only Boosting during a match(make sure to equip the Boost before starting the match and buy it during the match!)
I found it extremely easy doing it this way, and quite fun watching the Buckys work! Try to drop the creeps(walkers that capture bases) closer to the bases for better income and population cap, and you could consider building some stronger infantry to take the bases and hold them better.
There are three maps to choose from when playing Survival, and this achievement will unlock whenever you survive the last wave on any map. The easiest map is entitled Survival, Spiral is moderate difficulty, and Last Stand is the hardest.
Using the easier map for this achievement, the basic winning strategy is the same regardless of the number of players. Prior to starting the match you will want ensure you are using the optimal equipment:
- AirMech - Warthog
- Pilot - Samson (Ultimate Samson is significantly better if you have diamonds to buy him with).
- Units - Moneymaker (for increased income), Honeypot (to repair turrets), T99 (to shoot enemies), Soldier (to capture bases).
The overall strategy you are going to undertake is to build a Honeypot in each socket around the fortress and surround it with T99s. For the four outlying bases, the creeps will capture them for more income and you can socket a Moneymaker in each one. You will want to speed up the process early, so you can build four soldiers at a time and carry them over to the base in question.
When the game starts, the first wave will come across the bridge to the northwest so build a Honeypot in that socket and two T99s placed in the middle of the roadway between the tree and the honeypot. Your base will take a very small amount of damage, but those turrets will destroy all of the first wave without further intervention. The Creeps will capture the eastern base on their own so you can build four soldiers at a time and carry them over to the other three bases. Once you have all four captured, build four Moneymakers and socket one at each base. This should match up nicely with the end of the first wave.
For the second wave, start another two T99s building and move your Honeypot and existing T99s to the Northeast bridge (socket the Honeypot). Put two more T99's on the bridge so you have a row of four turrets between the honeypot and the decorative (but indestructible) guard tower. Those turrets will take care of wave two, so you can spend your time taking care of your overall defense layout. Build three more Honeypots and socket them around your fortress. Put four T99s blocking the road by each one (start with the southwest bridge since that is where wave three will come from) and then start destroying the fences around your fortress. They block the line of sight from your T99s and you will need them to be able to shoot in multiple directions in later waves.
Note that when placing a Honeypot, it shows a circle for the area of repair coverage. You will want to place at least two additional Honeypots on the southwest side of the base and two more on the northeast side of the base to fill in the gaps where the socketed Honeypots don't reach. At this point, you will want to build T99s until you run out of the ability to build anything, carpeting as much of the land as you can with T99s as long as they are placed within the coverage of a Honeypot. In particular, placing T99s on the lower dirt beneath the western and eastern socketed Honeypots will be critical for surviving from wave 6 on. When placing the unsocketed Honeypots, there are two bluffs that stick out directly to the north and south of the fortress that you can place Honeypots on that will provide coverage to the lower level. Ensure you put 4-5 T99s on the lower level to the north, south, east and west.
Whenever you run out of upkeep (the ability to place more units) upgrade your AirMech's abilities using the menu found by pressing . The critical upgrade you will absolutely need is the Gun Spray which enables you to shoot ground targets while flying. You can hover over a base or your fortress and shoot continuously until the base runs out of energy. This ability is why you need to have the Warthog as your AirMech. It is possible to win at Survival without using any abilities (and earn the "Miser" achievement along the way, but it is much easier with this approach. If you are going to go without ability upgrades, switch your AirMech to a Striker so you can shoot continuously while on the ground. Remember that tanks take more damage if you shoot them from behind, so feel free to use your mobility to your advantage.
You may start losing bases after wave six, especially the northern base which gets assaulted with a huge amount of enemy infantry. Keep an eye out and if you have time you can fly infantry over to recapture or just ignore them if you are busy.
With this strategy you shouldn't take any damage to your fortress after wave one or two. The game will end after wave nine, unlocking the achievement.
