Alan Wake 2

You can find propane tanks around the map with the other supplies you need in the game. I got this on my first area of Cauldron Lake. I hit Y, which brought up my inventory, and went over to the propane tank and hit A then equip. I used RT to throw it near the enemy and then shot it with my pistol. I would recommend using this on the smaller Taken to make sure it kills them.

Even easier when you are in your inventory I would select A on the propane tank and put it in a quick slot. Viewing your inventory does not stop the game, so enemies will still attack you. Other than that just throw it and shoot it when the enemy is nearby.

Also doing this after a break room/save will help in case it doesn't work the first time
