Just wanted to add if you are having trouble unlocking the Nightmare mode after completing the game on Easy or Normal the game appears to be checking for "completion" on both difficulties.

Complete the game on a either Easy or Normal (if you do normal you will get the achievements for easy completion as well I would recommend this).

After the credits on the main menu go to Episodes > Select the other difficulty (from not your full play through aka. if completed on normal select easy) > Episode 6: Departure > The Dark Place.

Complete the section in Alan's apartment. Run past the other words and light up the paths and bridge words, walk in the cabin, and then skip all the cutscenes and skip the credits and Nightmare should be unlocked 😁

If you still struggle like me to unlock nightmare mode, try hard reset your console and just continue from last checkpoint and finish game. No need to watch whole credits like some guides might suggest 😉

I wanted to give a heads up that this solution only works if you do normal difficulty first… If you do easy difficulty, you will be forced to do an entire new play through on normal. The main menu episode select only shows options for episode 1 and the 2 specials on normal. Ugh.

Yea I completed the game on easy and i have to replay on normal to unlock nightmare. Doesn't seem like an issue on the playstation version of the game.

Be careful if your goal is to finish the game quickly with only 2 runs, you must start your 1st game in normal mode to have access to the chapter selection in easy mode to just replay episode 6 the dark cave. Sorry my english is bad

Nightmare won’t unlock!!

Done the above methods, no unlock.
Went back and did a couple of mop up achievements, then redid the last segment chapter 6 both east and normal watching credits, no unlock.

Powered down, quit game, no unlock.

I really don’t want to have to do an extra run through on this but I might have to if this is a glitch!

So frustrating!

Thanks for this. Finished on normal and nightmare was still locked. Did this and I was able to start a new game on nightmare. Weird glitch but took a minute to correct.

Nightmare is actually quite easy.

Always try and avoid a fight rather than get into a fight.

Use your flares and flash grenades when there are plenty of larger enemies.

When you have companions just back up, destroy them with light and let your companions waste their ammo.

Make sure you are using all supply chests available to you! I personally followed this guide. https://www.xboxachievements.com/forum/topic/205346-alan-wak...

Another tip is to high beam your enemy for a second which will slow them down, then run to the next safe haven. Continue turning around and using this.

I think i would have died about 3 times in my whole nightmare playthrough. Do not be scared to use all ammunition available to you as usually you will lose all your ammo at the start of the next episode anyway. Many times I ended levels with plenty of flash and flare gun ammo.

Also ensure to walk through ALL safe havens, these are checkpoints. You can also go back to a safe haven and it will trigger a save if you beat some hard enemies and want to save that progress.

About unable to unlock Nightmare Difficulty:
Restart your consoles → Continue Game → Wait for Credits to end → New Game.
By the way: Easy Difficulty also applies to unlock Nightmare Difficulty.

Enemies hit harder, take longer to uncloak and tank more damage.

That's pretty much the main-difference. Ressources are still plentiful especially if you go for supply chests which will more often than not provide the big guns and flares/flashbangs.

As a rule of thumb, avoid fighting at all cost unless you already know it's a forced "arena"-fight or enemies would bother you for too long. Briefly flickering light at Taken will slow them down massively, same with flares - ideally in chokepoints or next to generators.

And keep in mind that the game will steal your ressources multiple times and always at the end of each chapter. So go all out on flares/flashbangs during final fights.

Here'a list of all supply chests copy pasted from the walkthrough so credits to whoever wrote that:

Episode One Nightmare: Behind the storage bay at Biltmore's first logging camp. Past the big truck on the left to the back of the hut
Episode One Nightmare: Stowed away in the shack above the second timber yard. Immediately after climbing the rocks, look left. There should be an opening near a crane, where logs are hanging above the path – and reflective paint. Follow the paint back there and up a ladder on the left, to a path that leads to a ramshackle house.
Episode One Nightmare: Close to Rusty's vehicle near Biltmore's second timber yard. Leave the shack and, instead of following the path up the hill, turn left and look for reflective paint. It leads to an ancient-looking garage with a chest and flare gun inside.
Episode One Nightmare: Near the track, in the half- circled boulders, near the third timber yard. You might catch a glimpse of reflective paint here. Go up to the left, climbing upward past the log mover to find the chest amongst the debris just beyond it.
Episode Two Taken: The raised alcove at the back of moonshine cave. At the bottom of the stairs, across the small bridge is a sign pointing right toward Lovers’ Peak, but you’ll see reflective paint on the rock next to it pointing you left to Moonshine Cave. Enter the cave and follow the path to the back right, where you’ll get a shotgun and a chest full of lithium batteries.
Episode Two Taken: The chest is in the waterfall grotto below the "Lovers Peak" lookout platform. After the radio station sign and before you reach the squad car, on the right willbe the yellow dots and arrows, follow them up an overgrown path guarded by the Taken, so remember to use a flash grenade to help with the supplies

Continue onto the junction and take the fork left path, following the marking upwardstowards the mine cart, to the cliffs edge and turn right towards another mine cart with an arrow painted in it. Follow the cart tracks into the mine tunnel to find thesupply chest.
Episode Three Ransom: By the rock and mist-filled vista above Gray Peak Gorge Ghost Town. The path splits so first take the lefthand side, with the tree trunk and follow the markings to the rocky cliff to find the supply chest
Episode Three Ransom: Close to the rock wall, by the rope bridge. In the rock wall to your left, you will find a alcove with the supply chest.
Episode Four The Truth: In the shaded stone alcove of Hartman's upper garden. Head over to the darkened path on the left side of the garden, and make to thecorner to find a stony path that leads onto a cliff where you will find thesupply chest.
Episode Four The Truth: In the root cellar underneath Walter Synder's cabin. Make your way out of the window and down to the cellar area, and grab the supplies, including the flash bangs in the Supply Chest, in the corner of the cellar.
Episode Four The Truth: Inside the empty cabin, on the road to thr Ranger's Station. Inside the cabin you will find the supply chest by the wall, in the corner.
Episode Four The Truth: Anderson farm near the stage, in the small barn near the rusty tractor. Back to the barn near the pile of tractors and inside in the far end of the roomyou will find the Supply Chest.

In order to unlock Nightmare difficulty, you need to have beaten the game once. Nightmare mode means enemies are stronger - they take more hits (4 rather than 2) - and supplies are rather more limited than Normal. Not massively difficult, just make sure every shot counts, you use flares to help subvert danger but only when absolutely necessary. Dodge a lot, keep on your toes and you'll be alright. A good tactic is to just run... run, run and run a bit more. Supply drops are always worth going after, but don't bother saving this playthrough to do your collectibles because frankly, there aren't enough supplies. A good tip is to use the stun-torch-move - where you briefly catch them with your boosted flashlight - to make sure the Taken never get too close.

I missed the trophy and they didn't give me. I tried through add. There are no trophy materials. Only replaying the last episode of Chapter 6 helped.
