How to unlock the Gunless Wonder achievement in Alan Wake - Definitive Guide
You can get this achievement in the final episode. From it's start, right up to the showdown with the tornado you must not fire a single shot from any gun.
I managed this on Normal by gratuitous use of vehicles in the early sections (boost your headlamps at the Taken, then run them over), and in the later sections resorted to dropping flares to keep chasing Taken back and throwing flashbangs (which don't count as shots fired) into the middle of groups of enemies to disintegrate them.
If you accidentally let off a shot, load the last checkpoint: any shots made prior to a load won't count.
The achievement will unlock around about the time you meet the tornado for the final battle.

Meh, it wasn't even that long. I just did it and happened to look on my watch, did it in around 30 mins. Normally the level would take me at least twice as long. In all honesty, this was running away on Normal mode, the other runs were one on Hard and one on Nightmare. For those that haven't done it yet: even when you first encounter the tornado, at the open area with the stationary lights and one searchlight, you can run away there. Make sure the tornado is out of sight and just run to the back where you have to push another train cart, pop a flare and push it, from my experience, once you're inside there, they won't follow you. This was the only part that might have been troubling, other than that it is easy, if you're bright enough to put it on Normal.

Another good type is to use the safe havens to destroy the taken. You can either with your back to the haven dodge and their momentum will take them into the light and kill them or if the taken has its back to the haven boost your torch at them to stagger them back into the light.

This achievement is pretty straightforward - you can't shoot any firearm at all from the time the level starts until you jump down on the ledge to fight the tornado. ***EDIT: You cannot use the FLARE GUN either, since it counts as a firearm***
Unlike the other posters, I did find this a little challenging, but I also got it on my first playthru and didn't know what resources would be available until I got to them.
Like the previous posters mentioned, car hopping is your best bet - if you can take a vehicle with you, do so. It will help you conserve flares and flashbangs, which are the only two carryable weapons you can use to get this achievement.
At one section, you will come to a spot where there will some small spot lamps you can turn on. Since you won't be using a firearm while getting this achievement and the small lamps won't take down the taken, run up to where there will be be a bus (or train car, I honestly couldn't tell which) and the darkness will throw it at you. Duck into the building, duck back out and dodge/run to the huge spotlight. If possible, use that exclusively on the taken and try to minimize the number of flares you use.
There will be a little car in the building behind you that you'll need to push as soon as the coast is clear. So as soon as you get all the spawned taken downed with the spotlight, get on the run. I was able to make it through this section only using one flare, but then I got downed on my run up the hill and had to start over - the second time didn't go as well for me.
It is very important that you have (if possible) at least 3 flares on you when you make your run. You will have to run up a long hill to a generator and if you can't fend the taken off with a flare, you won't be able to start it. I had to make the run with 0 flares, because I wasn't able to reserve any at the spotlight on that part of the run, and rather than re-start the checkpoint, I just ran.
If you can't start the genny because the pursuit is too hot, you can keep running to the next checkpoint, which is what I had to do.
So to recap:
1) You can only use flares, flash-bangs, cars, and environmental light sources like spotlights
2) Use cars as much as possible
3) Use the big spotlight as much as possible
4) Run like hell.

CRAP!!! I totally misread what you wrote and thought I could use anything flare and flash related ... so I totally used the flare gun. I was about to go crazy when the Achievement didn't pop!

D'oh. Sorry about that. I'm gonna edit my solution and hopefully make it a bit more clear for future users.

I have written an entire walkthrough for this achievement over at xbox360achievements.org. For convenience, I will simply provide a link to the forum post, as the guide is very long and has formatting.

The walkthrough contains very vivid instructions and guidelines on what to do. I would have reposted it here, but I figured it would just be better to provide the link to the original post.

This is a great walkthrough.
I would like to add the following:
If you wish to do this on hard whilst getting the collectibles I suggest that since you can die throughout this achievement and since when you do flashbangs return to your stock dont be afraid to fight your way to collectibles, then allow yourself to be killed. whatever you wanted you have now, flashbangs and flares restocked and you are good to go from most recent checkpoint.

this is a decently hard achievement to get but it can be easy if you do it right. All i can say is use flashbangs and flares and run and dodge like your life depends on it.
I actually managed this in Nightmare mode, so it's not actually as hard as it sounds. Run from Taken when you can, use Searchlights, flashbangs, or flares when you can't run. (Not the flare gun though!)
The trickiest section is the mining town (just after you have to push a cart out the way to get into the town). The good news is there's plenty of flares and flashbangs, and also the big searchlight as well.
Basically, you can't fire a single shot until the finale where you have to start firing the flare gun into the tornado. The chievo will pop just before that happens though, so if you've got to the tornado and started firing flares into it, you'll know something went wrong.
If you do accidentally fire a shot, immediately restart from last checkpoint, and you should be okay.

I would recommend doing this achievement in nightmare if you haven't completed the story mode. Firearms are less effective in the nightmare difficulty anyway and in fact it is actually a better strategy to avoid confrontation altogether. Whenever it is possible to advance to the next safe haven, just run to it. In many cases, you can run around the takens blocking your path. If necessary, try to run backward and use the flashlight to slow them down. Conserve flares as much as possible. Use flashbangs only when you have to defeat the takens first in order to progress. Don't pass up supply chests or locations where you can pick up flares and flashbangs. If used carefully, you will never run out of them.
This achievement was definately hard for me to get. To get this achievement you need to:
1. Stray away from the path and find hidden chests/crates. (Yellow signs and arrows point to them)
2. Use any car you can find
I also found that the Taken only attacks you when the screen becomes blurry and it gets windy above you.
3. When being chased by the Taken; sprint as much as possible and use the cinematic dodges well.
4. run to the light as much as possible.
On one part, there are multiple buildings around you, the tornado thingy comes and there are multiple chainsaw Taken. This was the hardest part for me. Use the flashbangs to try to take out the chainsaw Taken in one or two throws. (I beat this part on normal with many failed attempts and only three flares and two flashbangs.) At the end of this row of houses and buildings(past the bus that is blown away by the tornado), there is a large light that you can boost to kill the Taken. Lure the Taken back to the area where you came from (away from the light) and then haul butt back to the light. (If there are any Taken around you, use your flare to scare them away.) Use the light as fast as you can and kill the strongest of the enemies. Keep luring them back to this area until they are dead. It is pretty easy after this part.

This takes place in the last episode. After watching your show and so, you'll be going to Cauldron Lake. Don't fire a single bullet on your way, or you'll void the achievement. If so, you'll have to restart last checkpoint or otherwise, the entire episode to try again. Achievement pops if you haven't fired any bullets at all upon reaching the part where you're about to face the tornado.
This is 100% complete guide to all achievement/collectibles and full game. Timestamps are in comment on YouTube:
Don't be an idiot like me and do this on Hard, save yourself the agony and do it on Easy. You will need to make it through Episode 6 all the way until the last boss without firing a single shot. Keyword, Flashbang. Flashbang Grenades are going to be your best friend. To conserve them, use Flares to shield yourself from oncoming Taken and then sprint away from the danger toward a safe haven. If you don't have a Flare, or come to an unskippable amount of enemies, Flashbang them. And run like the wind.
Load up the first chapter in episode 6 to tackle this badboy. You essentially have to flare and flashbang it all the way... NO flaregun, but do use the car and its headlights where possible. Death is pretty much a given as well, so don't worry about that.
So in short, use no weapon that requires you to pull the .
