How to unlock the Chameleon achievement in Alekhine's Gun - Definitive Guide
The fundamental part of stealth is blending in to remain undetected. This trophy is for embracing this principle fully and changing disguises at least 30 times over the course of your playthrough. It is cumulative across all missions and progress is tracked in game without needing to finish a mission so you can back out to the main menu once you've worn a disguise during any clean-up for this one.
It's best to leave this one until you've completed the game as you'll have accumulated quite a few disguises naturally and only have a few left, and the ones you need can be obtained by brute force if needed.
Below is a list of disguises I either encountered naturally or by gunning down most NPC's on every mission and checking out their outfits, but by no means did I cover every square inch of map so there may be one or two missing and I've yet to see a definitive list anywhere on the internet.
Mission 1
- Soldier 1 – The guys that patrol the courtyard wear this, standard army gear with a hat
- Soldier 2 – Same as Soldier 1 but without a hat. There's one in the chapel of the courtyard area, up some internal stairs.
- Heavy Soldier – These are the bulky muscle dudes in white vests in the internal part of the main building
- Officer – One of your targets is wearing this one. Military with medals and hat
- Doctor – Your other target wears this. Standard doctor gear, long white coat
Mission 2
- Bell Boy – There's a guy in the foyer wearing this and a few others dotted around the halls
- Hotel Security – In most places. Most wear dark shades and stand guarding doors
- Waiter – One in the kitchen and another wandering in and out with food and drinks
- Police Uniform – A darker shade of the Bell Boy but looks the same. Ground floor guarding the room where you get the listening device
- Guard – These dudes guard the third floor and wear pastel suits
Mission 3
- Soldier – All the guys patrolling outside at the start of the mission wear this one
- Fireman – As you enter the fire station there will be a few of these guys wandering around
- Officer – Just before you take the elevator down below, there's an officer patrolling the corridor who keeps returning to a small office
- Scientist – Typical long white coat. Both of your targets wear this one.
Mission 4
- Main Guard – These guys are everywhere. Unavoidable.
- Kitchen Staff – Near the start, he will carry crates in and out of the storage room
- Target Guard – Each target here has a special guard wearing a hat
- Member – An oriental robe. One of your targets wears this, as to dudes walking around inside the sauna area
- Cook – There's a kitchen off one of the courtyard doors. Only one in the level
- Masseuse – Also wandering around the sauna area, oriental robe. Look for a guy with a ponytail, he's your man
Mission 5
- Biker – They're everywhere. Take your pick.
- Mechanic – Two dudes in a big lock-up that you need to go through to exit the mission
- Kitchen Staff – Chef in the back of the main building by the bar
- Courier – Dude drinking at the bar
Mission 6
- Mafia Suit – The main one. Plenty of guys wearing this.
- Target Guard – Hench looking fellas that mind the targets. The old dude has one stood outside his room
- Waiter – Keeps on bringing drinks outside for one of the targets by the pool
- Chef – Follow the waiter above who will take you to the kitchen where the Chef is
Mission 7
- Guard – Again this is the default outfit here, most guys are wearing it
- Sailor – Any of the fellas on the beach on or by the ships wear this one
- Target Guard – As usual, a special guy that minds the building the target is in
Mission 8
- Soldier – These guys are everywhere.
- Radio Operator – In the cabin where you need to send the communication to the army
Mission 9
- Sailor – Throughout the mission all over the ship
- Aircraft Mechanic – Bunch of them all working on planes in your starting position
- Deck Crew – Dudes in the yellow life jackets you need to kill as part of the mission. There's 6 of them
- Officer – Your main target wears this
Mission 10
- Policeman – The ground floor guys wear these.
- FBI Agent – The middle and upper floor guys wear this. Plenty are walking around the place.
- Detective – Amongst the FBI agents milling around the desks wearing plain clothes
Mission 11
- Guard – The guys you encounter at the start after going up the ladders
- Welder – The guys in the tunnels working on the tracks
- Naval Officer – The target in the main control room is wearing this
- Suit Guards – On the upper floors. Dark suits, found near the last target
As I say there may be more than this but there's definitely enough here for the trophy.
Note: Since you are playing as a male character, there are no female disguises.
For this achievement, you have to obtain a certain amount of disguises in the game. It is believed that the achievement unlocks once you have obtained 35-40 (it did for me), but since there are more than 35 disguises in the game, it’s possible that when the game was patched in early July 2016, they must have changed the requirements. If you are trying to unlock “Legendary” in your playthrough, it may be difficult to obtain all of the disguises in your playthrough as you cannot kill anyone except the assassination targets.
You can do one of two things:
- Complete the game and unlock “Legendary” before attempting this.
- If you know where a disguise is in a level, you can always “Save Game,” obtain the disguise then reload the save so it doesn’t count against you.
The preferred method is the second one so you don’t have to replay any levels.
If you choose the first method, once you’ve completed the game, select “New Game” from the main menu as this acts as a chapter select. As you are going through each level, the disguises save automatically, so once you obtain the last disguise you need, you can just exit the level.
A list of around 45 disguises was posted Saltyie on PSNProfiles. I have taken that list as a reference and added disguises that I obtained while playing the game that weren’t on the list, which now contains over 60 disguises. I also reworked the locations to make them easier to find. Refer to THIS POST for my list of disguises and where to obtain them. Even though some may seem to be repeated in later levels, I have added all the disguises I found in each level.
It is highly recommended that you print out this list and cross off the disguise as you obtain it.
On foreign forms they say that there is no need to replay the entire mission, it is enough to change clothes and you can immediately switch to another task.
The initial version actually had a requirement to obtain every outfit in the game. Due to the glitches of the game and the large number of clothes, it is easy to miss, but missed -> start all over again.
Two patches were released for the game, which apparently changed the requirements. However, I couldn't get the trophy by simply changing my disguise 30 times.
As of patch 1.02 (latest), the trophy requirement is now: collect 30 unique disguises in the game.
Here is a sample list. I’ll say right away that it seems to me that there are a lot more disguises in the game, as the author of this list himself writes about. So in the first mission I counted at least two more clothes.
