How to unlock the Short, Controlled Bursts achievement in Aliens Colonial Marines - Definitive Guide

Mission 1 - Distress

Play on Recruit to make it easier.

When the hangar bay door opens run over to the left and stand just in front of the barricade some of the Xenos will attack you before jumping over the barricade this may take a couple tries.

The achievement will pop when you walk through the open door.

see the gray box just to the left of the dead xeno at 0:50? i stood on it, and guess what.... the xenos can't hurt you while you're standing on it,, lol. a handful of them danced around me the whole time but wouldn't attack just so long as i was standing on that box. from that spot you actually have a great side-view of the whole hangar as well. so since you're untouchable while on the box, you can focus on the xenos that are actually going for the barricade, and then casually shotgun the ones that are paying attention to you.. on the box.. lolol. this little trick got me the achievement first try after several unsuccessful attempts standing infront of the barricade. soldier difficulty. try it. :))

This achievement IS rather hard to get on your own, even on Recruit difficulty! Only after failing about 20 times and learning the aliens exact patterns did I finally get this one to pop. Make sure to stay outside the barricades, and use the Secondary Fire on the vents. Once the door opens, make a run for it!

I was halfway through defending, I died and then unlocked the achievement while I was dead on the floor.

Video was a big help. I'd like to add that if you have Ripley's Pulse Rifle, it's much easier: 95 in the clip, secondary explosives and a flamethrower made life much simpler. I think I only had to reload once.

I jumped onto the gray box as mentioned by WEBHEAD7 and got rid of the first attack wave. However something interesting afterwards ... no further waves of aliens appeared! I was just standing on that box not daring to move scanning the area as the commentary continued in the background. When the big doors opened I ran through and the achievement popped. So I experienced one of those nice moments where a glitch was beneficial towards my getting a cheevo. Unfortunately I don't think standing on the gray box caused the glitch ... I was just lucky.

WEBHEAD 7's tip worked for me too. Although the aliens could still hurt me during the first wave, only one alien spawned during the second wave and the achievement popped while I was still standing on the box.

Thank you WEBHEAD 7! After many unsuccessful attempts I looked here for help and found your comment. Worked first try! And I only had to kill 4 aliens.

I personally found this rather difficult to do on my own. i followed the great video that intimidate posted and i still had probs getting the cheevo.

What i done in the end was to sign in a 2nd profile as player 2. I then placed player 2 in the corner of the room (right of barricade) while i defended the barricade.

Play the level as normal in single player and when you enter the lift and go down to the hanger bay there is a checkpoint. It was this point i quit out and signed in the secondary profile and resumed campaign, you will start again just as keyes throws the granade.

Make sure you are on the outside of the barrcade of the xeno's will jump over to get you.

Now this method makes it so much easier to get the cheevo as the majority of the xeno will attack player 2 and the few that come after you are easily killed.

As soon as the door opens kill any remaining xeno and run through the door and the cheevo will pop for both players.

I tried doing this a lot following others advice and struggled to get the cheevo, following this method i did it 1st time.

Happy hunting and hope this helps

also worth mentioning:

in the other solution (by iNTiMiDaTe xX), there is an extremely helpful comment by WEBHEAD 7 about a grey box by the hangar wall on the side where the aliens first apppear.

WEBHEAD 7 says:
"see the gray box just to the left of the dead xeno at 0:50? i stood on it, and guess what.... the xenos can't hurt you while you're standing on it,, lol. a handful of them danced around me the whole time but wouldn't attack just so long as i was standing on that box. from that spot you actually have a great side-view of the whole hangar as well. so since you're untouchable while on the box, you can focus on the xenos that are actually going for the barricade, and then casually shotgun the ones that are paying attention to you.. on the box.. lolol. this little trick got me the achievement first try after several unsuccessful attempts standing infront of the barricade. soldier difficulty. try it. :))"

this proved to work perfectly for me! just keep resetting checkpoint til you get it to work, took 3 tries for me.

Where you able to load that checkpoint to add your second controller or did you have to start the mission from the beginning split screen?

When you get into the lift and go down to the hanger there is a checkpoint just before keyes throws the grenade, it was this point i quit out and signed in a second profile and when you continue campaign you start just before the keyes throws the grenade. ill add this to the guide.

About halfway through mission 1, you will return to the hangar bay where there is a keypad Keyes will try to open while you defend a small barricade between him and the dropship. Stand between the barricade and the dropship and stop the aliens until Keyes opens the door and tells you to fall back. Watch the video below for the strategy and when to fall back.

This trophy can only be earned in the first mission, Distress and it is highly recommended that you play on Recruit difficulty when trying for it.

Towards the end of the mission you will reach a hangar where Keyes will throw a grenade, nearly destroying the ship. You'll come across some Marines who are pinned down by Xenomorphs and need some help, which is where the requirements for the trophy will begin. You'll notice that they have set up a small barricade, which you mustn't allow the Xenomorphs to breach. Start by setting up a Claymore near one of the entrances (if you're revisiting this mission on a lower difficulty as recommended, then you should be sufficiently levelled up to unlock this,) then exit the barricade.

I actually found it easier to come out of the barricade and guard the outside. This is because the Xenomorphs should (mostly) try to attack you, thus leaving the other Marines and the barricade alone. Watch out for the two open vents in the floor and the roof of the ship, which will all spawn Xenomorphs. The Pulse Rifle Firebomb and Tactical Shotgun Arc rounds are particularly effective here, as you can set fire to incoming Xenomorphs which should make them scramble plus you can stun them if they are getting too close.

If you keep moving around the outside and attract their attention, you shouldn't have too many problems with this. If you are, however, then you may wish to attempt it in co-op as it should be considerably easier having more than one person guarding the area. The trophy will also unlock for everyone if playing in co-op.

Mission one - Distress .
After the battle, you and your group will move to the Hangar. Your friend will throw a grenade and blow up the shuttle . After that, you must protect him until he opens the door . Your two other allies will be behind the barricade . None of the enemies should cross the barricade. I recommend getting this trophy on Recruit. Stay at the barricade at all times. Mostly enemies will attack you and not your allies ( AI ). You may get hit a few times, but it's better to shoot enemies with the Shotgun , because... it's fast and powerful.
As soon as the door opens, retreat. The door will close and you will receive the trophy.
Video guide.
