How to unlock the Teetotaller achievement in Alone in the Dark - Definitive Guide

This is for completing a playthrough without ever healing (up on the D-pad cn_up). Some tips:
- Play on Easy difficulty, most enemies die in 2-3 shots
- Always cn_B Dodging (for some reason the game never explicitly teaches you there's a dodge)
- Deaths are okay, as long as you reload from a manual save*
- Valid with either Edward or Emily
- Valid with any ending (best to wait until at least your second playthrough, so you can do one of the "secret" endings that skips the final boss fight)

*Currently, as of Apr 2024, this achievement is buggy and doesn't consistently unlock. What has been working for most people is if you only use manual saves to reload after a death.

Only load manual saves. I think this is the key. I did 2 playthroughs specifically for this and the only difference was that I only used manual saves when the achievement popped.

Can confirm only loading from manual saves unlocks it. I did a no healing playthrough with both Emily and Edward and didn't get it but tried it from only manual saves after I read this and that it did it

Thanks for the feedback! Only using manual saves was what worked for me too, but I was hesitant to attribute it to that without more confirmation. I'll update the solution.

I’ve done a single, no saves, no loads, no deaths, no heals run today and this did not unlock :(

Sorry to hear that, TwinbornHat :/ There were a couple people in the forums who said that even the manual reloads trick didn't work for them. Hopefully the devs are planning another patch.

To be honest I myself done already 5-6 runs without drinking the flask, first I didn't know the auto-save voids the trophy, but I definitely have done 2 runs like TwinbornHat mentioned. Last run I did with Emily in 2h, got the >3h achievement and I didn't die, but still unable to get this Achievement, this is the last one for me to 100% game.

Excellent guide, thanks! Worked perfectly on my Edward run.

So, I got the trophy with Edward...
I did it in one sitting and managed to finish the game in 1h52min, I just did manual saves time to time, but never actually reloaded the save as there was no need.

Ok, so a patch dropped on 22/04/24. The dev specifically states that they’ve fixed the Teetotaller trophy. I’ve just done a run (still didn’t load any autosaves) and can confirm that the achievement unlocked. Hopefully this is now fixed for everyone!

can confirm that you can make any number of manual saves and reload from them, if you happen to die, like I did in the Emily's chapter 4 memory (a single mound's hit is instakill even on easy), just quit to the menu and reload from the manual save, the chievo will unlock regardless

*PARTIALLY GLITCHED* (can only be completed as Edward)

Pressing dpad-up.png on the d-pad will see your chosen character downing a swig of booze to top up their health, so if you want to earn this, stay the hell away from the dpad-up.png button. Should you accidentally neck a shot, stop and reload your save. Be sure to use button-b.png to dodge enemy attacks, and if you can avoid combat altogether, that'll prove helpful too (press button-y.png to sneak). You can also complete the game early by giving Grace the 'All the World's a Stage' lagniappes set, ending the game without needing to fight the final boss, which is handy. It also goes without saying that you should attempt this at Easy difficulty.

The trophy was bugged in the latest patch (1,000,003). Doesn't fall out.

For those who have completed the game several times and the trophy has not dropped (provided that you are 100 percent sure that you did not accidentally take the flask), then the only cure is to erase all saves. Delete all saves (you can from the options of the game itself) and do a speedrun for Edward, the trophy will drop after killing the final boss

not fixed, deleted all saves, ran a speedrun as Edward without treatment, the trophy did not drop in any ending, did not use autosave

If the game started on an unpatched version and the trophy does not drop, then you need to delete all saves in the game and make a fastran for any character.
Saves can only be deleted in the game; files in the console do not need to be deleted.
After that, my trophy dropped for Emily right at the secret ending.

It seemed to me that even if you accidentally press up, when switching weapons, you can do this, drink the heal and try to roll back the save, the trophy is already blocked, because they didn’t give me a trophy for the detective, nor for the young lady. I got a fastran on Emily with an ending through Grace in order to skip the ending, clearly controlling the change of weapons, although there are fights on the fastran). Perhaps cloud backups would help.

Clicking on the d-pad, your chosen character will take a sip of alcohol to replenish their health, so if you want to earn this, stay away from the button If you accidentally hit your target, stop and recharge your save. Be sure to use to dodge enemy attacks, and if you can avoid combat altogether (press to sneak), this will also be useful. You can also complete the game early by giving Grace the Lagniappes "All the World on Stage" set, which will allow you to complete the game without having to fight the final boss, which is very convenient. It also goes without saying that you should try this on easy difficulty.

As of April 12, 2024, the bug is still present in the game. To avoid it, you need to use only manual saves. Save and load only manually. When using autosaves, problems arise with the trophy.
