How to unlock the Evolution of an Action Hero achievement in Alpha Protocol - Definitive Guide
Now, at first Recruit may seem terribly underpowered starting with 0 AP--but if you select during the first segment of the game the Recruit dialogue option each time it is available, you will unlock two successive perks which will award you 10 AP between them (2 and then 8 for using Recruit a total of 10 times).
This is a nice way of padding the gap back in your favor a little bit, and should help make your Recruit playthrough a bit more manageable.
Not recommended to run this and the Hard difficulty achievement at the same time, but it is -doable-.
When you start a new game, after choosing which difficulty to play on, you will be given an option to choose your background. For this achievement, you must finish the game with the Recruit background. Using the Recruit background gives a slight disadvantage compared to the other backgrounds, as you will not have any skill points automatically invested like other backgrounds. That means you will end the game with less skill points compared to other backgrounds.
For your first playthrough, it is highly recommend starting off with the Recruit background, for efficiency. Finish the game with the Recruit background unlocks the Veteran background for future playthroughs.
When starting a new game, instead of choosing a background such as "Soldier" or "Field Agent" that gives you free ranks in various skills, you also have the option of choosing the "Recruit" background, which starts you off with zero skills across the board. For best results, this trophy should be earned on your Easy playthrough, to mitigate the additional difficulty of "Recruit" Thorton's complete ineptitude. Earning this trophy will unlock the "Veteran" background which gives you three ranks in all skills at the start of the game, so this should be a priority before attempting the Hardcore trophy.
