Don't worry about trying for this early on -- naturally through the course of the game's progression you will gain much more potent offensive capabilities with every character, and as in most shmups, a good offense is your best defense as it removes enemies from play faster, thus reducing the amount of bullets and other nonsense for you to dodge.

Shin may be a good choice for attempting this later, as his plant shield destroys enemy projectiles -- the same goes for Samhill's kitana ability.
