This must be done in local co-op mode. Start the game by going to Arcade mode, then selecting 2 players under settings. It does not matter if you use a continue or not as long as you finish the episode. This means that you do not actually need two players to get this achievement, as deaths don't matter. Just two controllers and alternate between each level.

Does this unlock after or before a final boss?

After, apparently. I just got to the boss and the ball got stuck in his face, had to quit and no achievement.
