How to unlock the Certificate of DOH achievement in ARKANOID Live! - Definitive Guide

This achievement really isn't too difficult. The only reason it can become frustrating is if your ball gets going too fast on a level (probably one of the last few) and you fail, because you will have just played nearly an hour for no reward. :( Just do the following to make this as easy as possible:

1) Set the gameplay to Easy, and use Barriers (max of 5). Also, turn enemies off.

2) Play with a friend*. 2 people is always better than 1. If you don't have a friend to play with, just turn on a second controller and leave it stationary. At least it raises your chances a little if you miss the ball.

You do NOT need to defeat the boss to unlock this achievement.
Use this same strategy to unlock the "Certificate of Bones" achievement.

*Co-op play is local only. Also, only the main profile will unlock this achievement.

I urge everyone to not bother with this. You need gargantuan amounts of blind luck when it comes to getting the ball through a one block hole in between a full cage of indestructible blocks in an unforgivable number of levels. After which you need more blind luck so that the ball finishes the level and does not bounce back out of that cage of indestructible blocks.

And for what its worth, choosing lives instead of barriers is the more sensible choice in my opinion. The aforementioned levels with indestructible cages simply grind through your five barriers in a few miserable moments when the ball gains speed and never ever slows down in between breaking your barriers. But again, going for this is a waste of your time and mood. The game doesn't behave with the angles and the level design is horrendously toxic.

It's not fully impossible, but consider doing literally anything else with your time. You could be reconnecting with your family. Or curing cancer. I'm pretty sure trying this *gives* you cancer instead.

Damn, one would really think making an Arkanoid game wouldn't be that hard to get right. But the devs managed to really soil the bed with this one.

This was laughably easy with 2 controllers and setting lives to 7. I got this on my first try with an extra life to spare. I often played with the 2nd controller since it had less lives, but it's fine if you lose all your lives on it since you can continue onwards with just one player. This happened to me on the last round. Also, I played with the speed to 8, since I am used to max sensitivity from Eternal Battle.

Why is 5 barriers better than 7 lives?

To add to what Czaleo said, you do get lives back if you choose lives over barriers. You get extra lives at point intervals, I think it might be something like 20k points, 40k, 80k, etc.

Wether to choose barriers or lives is really up to you. Barriers can be more dangerous because the ball never slows down and on those cramped levels with lots of golden blocks, you can easily and quickly lose all 5 barriers if you get unlucky. I still prefer barriers myself.

@Xonatron: You know, this was so long ago that I can't exactly recall... I'm sure that's just what I heard was the best way to do it. Have you found 7 lives to be a better strategy?

@Z3RO 37, no I haven't. I don't even own the game. I was just demo'ing it and thinking about buying it. I came here to see how in depth this game was and then just got curious! :)

Well alright. Yeah, I just remember hearing that was the way to go. If you do get it and find one to be better than the other then please write back and let me know! :) But I did mine with the barriers instead of lives.

I have the answer on this one, 5 barriers is better than 7 lives because, if you lose one or two or all of your barriers on a level, your barriers reset on the next level at 5 again. Whereas if you lose a life, you don't get any of them back..., and obviously if you lose all of them, it's game over.. :-/

Nice tip on using a second controller, I might try this as I have just wasted 2 hours trying to get through the 30 levels, only to lose twice in the 20's... lol, it's really not a hard achievement but can be frustrating when you're playing a level with multiple indestructible gold bars and you have to squeeze the ball in just right to make it work.

If anyone is still looking at comments or cares, LIVES is definitely the way to go. Barriers will not stop the ball from bouncing. At least if you die, you get a chance to start over with the blocks you have destroyed still gone. Also, you have a chance to earn extra lives via points. Start with 7 lives, Easy, and no enemies.

@KJer25 Thanks for the tip on using lives instead of barriers. I had been trying for so long using barriers that I eventually decided it was too difficult to do when reaching the levels near the end and when the ball eventually moves to fast, there's almost nothing you can do about it.
For anyone that's trying to get this achievement, I'd agree that lives is definitely the better option of the two to go with. I would recommend trying not to lose any lives at least for the first 10 rounds as you will be thankful later on when you get near the end when you have them saved up for when the pressure starts to build.

Yeah i give up. Level 29, two blocks remaining. Why does this game have to have indestructible blocks.... and the ball got stuck between two gold blocks and speed up.... it literary ruins the whole game.

Can't believe I'm here in 2022. I felt like playing an arcade game and I did the achievement for Episode 2 on my first try without dying once, then I tried Episode 1 and what the actual f***? I hope the person behind the level design isn't working in the video game industry anymore; it is not even hard, it is plain dumb. It takes forever because the physic in this Arkanoid game is broken, can't even compete with the one on NES. No wonder why we ain't seeing new Arkanoid game.
