This may seem like a huge amount initially, but you should be drifting hundreds of meters per race in your attempts to win. It may take a little practice to perfect when and how long to drift, but you'll be doing it often in most races. This will actually unlock relatively early in your time with this game, so long as you continually use drift to swing around corners to avoid slowing down.
