Knocking down a car is when you hit a car and it goes into slow-motion and explodes. This is extremely easy to do to AI cars, but other players in multi-player are much harder to knock down. Here are the ways in which you can knock down AI cars (in career mode and daily events):

• Do a 360 into them
• Touch them while using nitro
• Touch them while in midair
• Land on them
• Force them into a wall

The last two are the rarest, but the first three will happen constantly. You should be using your nitro regularly throughout a race, and any time you touch another car while using nitro you'll knock them down. If you're ever right behind a car and can't pass it, use nitro and hit it from behind and you knock it down.

You'll be doing this literally hundreds of times throughout your time with this game, so this will unlock very early.
