How to unlock the Hero achievement in Asteroids & Deluxe - Definitive Guide

This one can be a bit confusing, because in the evolved version it shows your current life along with the rest of your lives; however it does not count as a life in hand. Basically what you need to do is have 5 lives at once, including your current one.

The easiest way to do this is to reach 20,000 without dying. I recommend using the retro version, as there are fewer explosions and flare so the screen doesn't get so busy. The best way to get points fast is to kill satellites (the triangles that follow you). These appear when there are a certain number of asteroids left on each stage. On the first stage they appear when there are 2-3 asteroids left, regardless of size, the second stage 3-4, third stage 4-5, etc.

What I found works, is to try to get as many points as possible on the first stage. Begin by completing destroying one of the large asteroids, so that only 3 large asteroids remain. You have to do this fast, otherwise a saucer will come and likely start destroying your other large asteroids. If you do it fast enough, a satellite should appear. Kill it and if you managed not to hit any of your asteroids (the three large ones are still intact) another satellite will appear. Continue to do this, and if you accidently shot an asteroid (or a saucer does) just try to get it back to only 3 asteroids on screen. You might want to keep your eyes out for saucers as well, killing them as fast as possible, as they will likely mess up your setup. You should have at least 10,000 points, giving you an extra life, by the end of the first stage. From that point, just play normally trying to survive long enough to get another 10,000.

It will take some practice, but you should get it eventually. Remember to use your shield (X button), when you know you can't escape a situation.

Don't you start off with 3 lives? and isn't it a new life at 10,000?

That is correct, but your current life doesn't count towards your total amount of lives. You have to get 4 lives not including the one you start with, so you need to reach 20,000, to obtain those 2 extra lives.

looks like it will show 2 life when you choose classic version but 3 life when you choose evolved version so I am trying to get 10.000 in evolved version instead.

EDIT: Even if it does you need 20.000 without dying so this guide is correct for both versions.
