The best way to get this achievement is too let the saucers do all the work for you.
They are very aggressive, and will break down the rocks for you.
Obviously you have to get to wave 3 first. Just quickly go through the first 2 waves, don't waste time getting points, if you want, you don't even have to kill of the 6 hex pieces, just lead them off screen, they will eventually disappear. The UFOs will tend to track you, so use your shield if you can't dodge it's bullets. The shield will last a long time.
When you get to wave 3, just avoid shooting the asteroids. This will save you a lot of shots. Once there are a lot less rocks, then start counting your shots. You should be able to clear it with a lot less than 42.
