You will get it naturally. But to guarantee it, hit the rat enemies (the second enemy type I think you come across) with a “dark” attack (which one of your team has as an ability) which they’re weak to.

Kaydin (the bird character) starts with Umbre, this will work against the rats.

I already forget his name, but the big guy knows a fire move, the little blue creatures you fight first are weak to it.

The, Pants, Party
This can also be done in the first battle of the game assuming Dagmar is in your party. Use fire against the enemy. You can turn on the ability to see enemy weaknesses in the options menu which helps to end battles much more quickly.
