How to unlock the The Wanderer's Way achievement in ASTRONEER - Definitive Guide

You will need to purchase the "Probe Scanner" for 4000 bytes. You can craft said scanner with 1x Steel off your backpack.

After building the scanner place it on one of your aux slots (the backpack "shoulders") and press the corresponding aux button LB/RB to activate the scanner. Once the scanner is on it will start spinning and playing some sort of music like a broken fax machine. When the scanner is spinning it will occasionally slowdown and ping in a direction (it can ping multiple times per revolution), these indicate the direction of a Vintage Probe.

On your way to the Probes the Scanner will occasionally chime at you and the little dots on it will begin to light up, blink, then stay on the closer you get lighting up more of the dots. I didn't realize this until the last few planets as I was chatting with someone during the travels.

After traveling to the Probe you can place the Scanner onto its slot and it will consume the Scanner and give you the Achievement along with a cosmetic. You will only need to complete one Probe per planet. There are at least 4 or 5 pings in any given area.

Fair bit of warning, these Scanners are consumed per Probe so make sure you bring a few at least for each trip.

******Slight spoiler warning******
After completing the last one there will be a hologram of another Astroneer gesturing, this lasts about 30 to 40 seconds and the achievement will unlock after this is done.
******End of slight spoilers******

EDIT: You will need to interact with the hologram that appears out of the last probe, if you miss this you will need to build another Scanner and place it on any Probe (thanks to II Loadsman for the advice!)

Here is a picture of one of the Probes on Novus, note that all of the ones that I found on every planet looked different and varied in size (yours will look similar to this, but with a holographic Scanner coming out of a tier-1 spot somewhere on the chassis, I had already gotten this one so there is no hologram)

Here is the Probe on Calidor (for me), as you can see I had to bury into the mountain and make a cave to find the Scanner Node and place the Scanner onto

And I thought I was through driving over the surfaces and being randomly swallowed or hung up on indestructible plants...
At least the patch before this one seemed to fix driving a little bit.

Agreed, now I can actually drive and drill at the same time, earlier it was stop go stop go stop go, now it is a decent option for getting soil and traversing to these probes at the same time

I was on a file with at least 90h on it already, had to finish the base sorting i started earlier xD

As long as you have a Scanner on your backpack aux slot and have it on then it should do the trick and lead you to the location of the Probe, I forgot which planets I had but if you activate it in the core of a planet and get no pings it means you have that planet done, if you get pings then tp to one of the Chambers and begin the hunt

I really advise going on foot, because you need to check the Scanner every so often and you have to navigate over some terrain not always favorable to Rovers

Just wanna reiterate what I told you the other day, there is only one probe per planet

edit-
also as you can clearly see, they always look the same and will always generate in the same biome.

One important thing to note that beefcake128 and I found: you must interact with the hologram of the astroneer that pops up when you use the last probe, or else the achievement will not unlock. However, if (like us) you do miss it, you can reactivate it with another probe scanner.

(It seems that you don't need to use the same last probe for the hologram: beefcake's last unlocked probe was on Calidor but he interacted with the hologram on Atrox and got the achievement)

Just to mention; I got the achievement, but didnt get the suit, because on one of the planets it did not reward me the colors. Is there a way to get this afterwards? The scanner is useless, because the probe has already been scanned...

Mmmm I am not sure if there is a surefire way to get it unless it was unlocked when it was supposed to, this game is notorious for suits and other cosmetics to be "unlocked" as they should be but you will need to restart the application to see those effects in-game.

I remember the last achievement's suit and the Apollo suit didnt say they unlocked but they were there when I rebooted the game.

Just a note for those playing in co-op. The achievements are individual, so you both need to place your own probes

As a side note: If you have located but not placed the scanner in the probe the game will make your scanner think it has. I thought I had put a scanner in every probe but my achievement was stuck at 86% turns out I hadn't placed one in the probe on Novus. When I would land on Novus after that trying to find the missed probe the lights of the scanner were off and it would spin aimlessly when activated.

Thought I'd try this now the games slightly more stable.

Walking around Artox is hard. I've got 4 oxy filters, portable oxy, a battery pack, wind turbine and solar panel and I am not having fun.
I think my rover got swallowed up a while ago. :(

so i found the last probe on atrox, it was really high in the Swiss cheese mountains ( a nightmare to navigate)

when i fitted the scanner it beamed the hologram above the cloud level so i moved the probe by digging which instantly stopped the event. -.-

went back to starter base to get new scanner, fitted it on the probe on starter planet nothing. -.-

had to go back and manually find the probe on atrox and fit new scanner after moving it to a location it can be viewed.

it can beam the message into the floor etc where you cannot access it to interact.

I've done all the probes and when i get the bridge activated I do not get the prompt to interact with it. Anyone know a fix for this? The bridge will not appear unless I go back to the same scanner on Atrox

i am pretty sure i found all the probes but my tracker stuck at 86%!
i am afraid like mentioned i need to interact with the hologram, but i didnt do that on my last probe and now the probe scanner doesnt detect anything, i can't seem to find the probe again

I didn't know the probe would do anything after activation when you got the last one now I can't reactivate it for some reason

@whably you just need to use the probe scanner to find it.

I forgot to interact with the hologram on the last probe, which was on Vesania for me. So i tried doing the probe on Sylva several times and it only showed a very brief hologram, that didnt have the wanderer in it. So i went back to Vesania and then it showed me the hologram with the wanderer.

@FinalHero, same here. The last probe for me was on Glacio, but it didn't register. The bridge appeared, went through with the prompt but nothing else happened. Can't reactivate the probe with a scanner, and the bridge doesn't have another interact option.

Thanks for this, I will start my search soon. I had one question: do these appear above ground, under or within earth material (requiring excavation)? The screenshots look to me to be underground, and you mentioned that the Calidor probe required digging.
Appreciate the guide!

So I did all the probes and everything but at the time of doing the final probe I didn't know anything would happen, so I activated it and left. Now I do not know where the probe was other than it was on Glacio and it was between some rocks, I can either just keep looking for the probe, which I probably won't do, or do nothing and be stuck with 55/56 achievements. If anyone has any suggestions please help.

All of the ones that I found were above ground, the closest ones to being under were Calidor (as you see in the pics) and Atrox, that one was embedded into a cliffside of a mountain that housed a catacomb so it would be close to underground but still visible from most angles other than directly on top of the mountain/cliff

As for excavating I believe that Calidor, Atrox, and Novus required some slight digging with the only notable one being Calidor heavily in the mountainside, I felt it helpful to point out their sporadic spawns but they should be always noticeable on the surface, if you are unsure you can hover the curser over any satellite and you will know when it says "Vintige Probe" or something like that, after that you can then bust out the mining equipment for sure

When and Where?
After completing Things to Remember you unlock mission When and Where? I attempted to scan the last probe I scanned multiple times even resorting to reloading from saves and doing it all over again to no avail. I decided I was going to have to go scan each probe again until I completed it. I decided to start back in the same order I began with and went back to Sylva and it completed properly. Be sure to interact with the Wanderer to take a Picture.

Unlock 1: Wanderer Suit
Unlock 2: Wanderer Grey
Unlock 3: Take a Picture

I just want to clarify something just in case there is any confusion while you're out looking for your probes. There is only ONE Probe per planet.

I know a lot of you hate links but bare with me.
https://astroneer.gamepedia.com/Historical_Probes

This is a link that shows what each probe looks like and the sort of biome they spawn in. The only RNG you have to worry about is the layout of all of your generated planets. The probe will always be the same, and the biome it's in will always be the same. you just have to use your scanner to find out where. Please refer to Vittror's solution for any more info.

when I did all probes I didn't get the achievement I was so upset and frustrated. Then I looked at the completion percentage and it was at 56% even though I definitely did all the probes. Eventually I realized I was supposed to get a palette every time I did a probe, but I didn't so I went back and did all the probes I didn't get the palette for. When I got to the last one the wanderer showed up and I got the achievement.

Note: when I did all the probes the first time I got the in game notification that I completed the mission to activate all the probes.
So I guess having all the palettes might be what indicates you got the probes.

I don't think the palettes have that specific correlation. I have all the palettes unlocked, but my achievement progress is at 71%, so I have no idea which I'm "missing" and need to do over.

Requires you to activate all 7 probes (one on each planet) using a probe scanner, and at the final probe when *spoilers* a rift opens up and you see the wanderer approach the probe and a prompt should pop up saying to take a picture, activate the prompt and you should get the achievement. Remember this can only be done on the final probe and he only stays 30 seconds after activating, but if you miss him upon re activating the final probe he will reappear.

There is only one probe on each planet. There are reports online that the achievement may be slightly glitchy and some probe will not be counted the first time. It is advised to make sure that when you attach the scanner to the probe, you get a new costume for your character. If it doesn’t fall out, it means this particular probe has malfunctioned and you need to plug another scanner into it, and before that it’s better to restart the game. You also need to stand at the last probe for a while and you will be asked to take a photo. After this you will receive the achievement. If you leave without waiting, you may have to plug another scanner into any probe in order to start the hologram again and definitely take a photo.
