How to unlock the Journey to the Unknown 3 achievement in Attack on Titan 2 - Definitive Guide
Depending on your grinding experience this could terribly tedious or not too bad. Over all your looking at about a 50-60 hour grind. Multiple playthroughs will be required, including a full inferno playthrough and repeating several missions on inferno many times. Once you finish your first playthrough the endgame aspect begins, allowing you to replay missions, continue friendship leveling and going back a saving the friends who died during the story. In regards to difficulty it's pretty easy, the worst of it is the initial inferno run without the solar sword which, in my opinion, is the best sword in the game since it has the ability to stun lock the bosses. Once you have that, the grinding becomes way more manageable. Below I'll list some useful information to help you get this achievement.
My final stats were as follows:
Playtime: 160 hours (some idling)
Titans Killed: 10,184
Missions completed: 163
Co-op: I was told that going for this achievement with a partner is very helpful since you can do joint gear upgrades at half the cost cutting your grinding time. I played the whole game solo so I'm limited with this knowledge but if you find someone I highly recommend it. From what I gathered you play in co-op in "Another Mode" which allows you to play as other characters as well as your created character. There is an option to select all the different missions and difficulties. Story mode CAN be completed in Co-op as long as the host already completed story mode. Thanks Boost17 for the clarification**
Gallery:
Below are the different gallery sections and what you need to do to get them to 100%. All but the equipment field guide can be completed by just doing your story playthroughs, max leveling your friends and scout missions. That said, there's still a little more to it that'll explain below:
Regiment History: You'll get this by simply playing through the whole story and max leveling your friends. After every mission be sure to talk to your friends and level them. Start working on this right away so you can limit the friendship leveling grind later. I found leveling friendship the most tedious aspect of this game. Your able to save characters who died during the story by replaying missions after your first initial playthrough.
Music Collection: This unlocks simply by playing through game, I didn't pay much attention to its progression but it comes fairly early. Not sure if it requires all the scout missions completed or not.
Muster Roll: The muster roll is completed by S ranking every scout mission. Obviously this becomes easier once you have obtained better gear. You can check out my S ranking achievement guide below for guidance on how to do this since the requirements can also be applied to scout missions.
Titan Guide: You need kill every single titan model in the game, and there's a shit ton, easily over 250. What I did was during my first playthorugh I killed every titan in each mission. Even going out of my way to finish off the stragglers'. This also helps net your elimination requirement for the S rank. This was completed upon me finishing my first play through and completing all scout missions.
Equipment Field Guide: This is the big one. You need to craft and upgrade every weapon, scabbard & ODM gear. As well as purchase every horse. As you complete missions you will be given crafting mats as rewards as well as currency, you need BOTH to create the gear. The higher the difficulty the rarer the mats. To give you some kind of road map I played my game the following way:
story playthrough > 2nd Story playthrough for dire eliminations and any remaining S ranks > complete all scout missions > inferno mode story playthrough > Farm mats for Solar sword > grind
With this route I had a lot of mats, especially for the weaker weapons. You can eliminate one playthrough by combining the dire eliminations with the inferno run but that might be a bit of pain but it's definitely an option if you choose to go that route.
Inferno Mode Grinding:
Let's go over some tips to make your inferno journey much easier. Inferno mode is a major step up from normal and if you're not prepared it could be a pain. The titans can kill you in two shots and have a MUCH larger health pool. They are also super aggressive and move all over the place making accurate nape attacks much tougher to execute. I did my initial run using the gunblade, upgrade it has much has possible or as soon as you get the mats to do so. I think I reinforced it to like +10. Before that I used the chainsaws.
Scabbards, I went with whatever carried a lot of blades and had nice high numbers for the other two stats, The gebrullcheide, sheath prototype and the upgraded versions are what I used the most. When I got good enough I used the solar scabbard, but that one only carries one blade. With the ODMs I went with whatever had the farthest range. I settled with the solar one fairly early and never took it off.
Items, bases and squad mates. You're going to be using these things A LOT. First thing you're going to want to do is get accustomed to having battle signal activated for most of the missions since its buffs your DPS significantly. Unlock the skill Decisive Battle from Erwin and Item miester lvl 3 from Moblit. Then when in mission create a garrison base, then a couple of manufacturing bases. Like that your being fed flares and items giving you more opportunities to have battle signal activated. Do side missions for flares and try and pick up the better squad mates, like the ones with the capture nets or the ones that have the mini cuts scenes that down the titans. Obviously you don't need to do all side missions since most of the time it's best to finish off the mission. The other items I found myself using where SOS to give your squad mates more uses, flash grenade, which saved me from death several times and the smokescreen when I wanted to traverse the map undetected. Without the solar sword bosses kind of suck, female titan was an instant one shot. The other ones where 2 shot kills. Just have battle signal activated, use your squad/items and be quick while dodging like crazy.
Once the initial inferno run is done the first thing you do is go get your solar sword. The solar sword comes from upgrading the heat sword to the fullest. Its also cheaper to reinforce the heat sword as much as possible since the reinforcement carries over with each upgrade. The solar sword is absolute boss destroyer. The flames it produces shreds the green shield bosses have allowing you to keep them in a stunned state. Just aim for the limbs and do quick hits to ignite them, you don't even have to hit the green limb. It's kind of game breaking which is why I guess in order to obtain it you need to finish inferno first. I reinforced up to +40 with 710 sharpness. You can choose to upgrade your sword even further if you wish going first up to +99 then further reinforcing another 99 levels to +99*. Youtube has great guides if you're interested. At this point I personally didn't want to spend more time in the game. Also worth noting The perfected blade and the cloud zero are the other elite blades that some great players on youtube use.
Once you have your Solar sword you can now start grinding mats which involves killing a lot of bosses and cutting off their limbs. Below I'm going to list the missions I mostly grinded. I'm not going to list every mat because you can see the different mats dropped in what mission hitting Y on the selected mission. Another thing is to select the policy "Form material recovery squad" before every mission to increase mat totals or "Fund raising activities" if you want more currency, which is needed to pay for the upgrades.
If you have Final Battle be sure to read a great tip below from the user Peaches 518!
Boss drops:
It's important you always take out their two limbs before killing them to maximize your drops.
Female Titan - Glowing Titan Crystal
Ymir looking titan - Titan Fang (large)
Colossal Titan - Colossal Crystals
Beast Titan - Ominous Titan Crystals
Armored titan - Large Titan Armor Fragments
Story missions:
Choices and consequences - Here is your no DLC option for glowing crsytals since you fight two female titans. I believe the mission consistently dropped 8.
Treacherous Soldier - Super easy quick mission to get Titan Fang (large) & Large titan armor fragments. Just rush to the colossal titan at the beginning, take our the dire elimination for fangs then armored titan for the fragments. You'll be clearing this in under 5 minutes.
Nameless Hero - This is where you get the colossal crystals. Just try to rush to the colossal fight but be sure to kill some titans around the bases so they don't destroy them all and you fail the mission. Warning: On occasion completing this mission won't yield any colossal crystals..
DLC missions: These missions are great for materials. I farmed tons of large titan and ominous crystals with these. If your good enough you can do these on Inferno and with an s rank you can get a bunch boss crystals. However, I found it pretty hard when I tried them on inferno so I just stuck with the story missions. The players you see on youtube crush these missions have +99* swords and max friendship leveled all 38 characters on inferno as well for better stats. I personally wasn't up for that additional grind. But it's definitely an option if you are up for it. Here are the best DLC missions I found:
Goddess Salvation - This mission is solely for currency purposes. You can yield about 150k with the policy perk and the money skill activated.
Biological Research Scout Mission - This the one I ran through a ton for Large titan and Ominous crystals, just be sure to S rank it. Very easy on normal & unsure how much it drops on inferno
Discouragement and the leaning tower - This a huge one for inferno, as it drops a ton of glowing and colossal crystals if S ranked. I ran through it but couldn't get the S rank and my drops weren't that great considering the trouble I went through. If your up for it give it a shot.
A titan worth a Thousand - A good one that was recommended to me. For some reason I didn't find the need to farm it much but I feel its worth noting.
Hope this guide proves useful for some of you and please let me know if I need to add/change anything,

A really important tip for those of us who have Final Battle (which is probably most of us who bought the game after FB was released):
Get Kitz in territorial recovery mode. You can get him by either starting as him (the easiest way, but only available if you haven't started the mode yet), by having his missions pop up on expeditions, or get a level 5 War Room and then use the new recruitment distress call.
Max out his camaraderie with the custom character. You just need to go out on missions with both in your party, you'll get it pretty quick. This unlocks a skill called "Elimination Bounty." It only costs 10 SP to equip. Once equipped, if you get 10 Complete Eliminations in a mission (usually pretty easy on Inferno once you get good equipment and skills), it gives you a bonus of 20 materials per material type per reward type. So if you defeat a Beast Titan on Inferno, you'd usually get 1 Ominous Crystal for killing him and 2 Ominous for cutting off his limbs. But after turning on the skill and getting your 10 Complete Eliminations, killing the Beast will give you 43 total. This makes the grind so much faster and easier.

Very good guide. I would say though that the joint gear is a risky one. Myself and a friend had it work once. The second time, it only provided the completed item to my friend, whereas on my side it came up as an error so it didn't complete. It still took the materials out of my inventory though. Thankfully it was something we tested on lower level equipment and not anything which required some of the Inferno items.
Co-op can help in some regards, but I would also advise against it. The titans gain more health per person in the game, if you all die, you don't get a checkpoint like you do in solo. The material form also only works for the host for some odd reason.

For people who don't wanna waste time grinding weapons to 99+* before tackling Inferno - you'll most likely run into some trouble with Annies first encounter on the fields.
Nothing about this mission is fair or balanced.
You're given Reiner, Jean and Armin as teammates. One more useless than the other - so very in line with the original story.
Annies position will always reset to the outer part of the middle, which also happens to be very close to a Zeke-clone should you be unfortunate enough to have him spawn so chances are he's gonna join up in the middle of fighting Annie.
Annies limbs also regenerate health so good luck outdpsing her with how shitty the targeting in this one is. Molotov spam in DBS with enough item bases around might work, but I didn't have any equipped so I couldn't test it and I didn't feel like playing the already terrible first part of the mission again.
What worked for me in the end was going in a circle around the map building Attack on bases to increase my dps, depleted Annies stamina and attacked her with stealth attacks. Since she's out of stamina she won't instantly go berserk but you're still able to deal some hefty damage (177k per hit for me). That was enough to at least defeat her in 4 charges before she could get back up again. This also allows you to skip the final wave of Titans she summons when she's nearing "death".
Also; if you're in the same boat as me and refuse to spend 50bucks (or 30 on sale) for the stupid FB-DLC you could instead get the "something something leaning tower DLC" for a single buck.
This specific mission will provide 21 Large Armor Titan Fragments ( the one Reiner drops - Inferno) and 41 Ominous Crystals for S/SS ranks in STORY MODE - NOT Inferno. This means you won't have to farm Zekes/Reiners at all in Inferno.
And to top it all of SSrank (no clue about S since the Dire will spawn either way if you're going for an Srank anyways) in Inferno will provide 20 Glowing/ 12Colossal Crystals as Rankrewards as well as ~12 Titan fangs (Large) from the Jaw-titans that spawn at the end of the mission. So ANY boss-crystal can be farmed while only having to engage 3 Jawtitans (by far the easiest of the Shifters).
I was able to consistently get a SS-rank by mostly using Annie, Well prepared skill (starts you with 3 SOS-signals = 3 female Titans) + whatever the thing for 20 wings is called ( the one in all package that further increases your inventory and buffs you and everyone around you).
And as if this mission wasn't a wet dream come true already - it's also perfect to farm currency. Do a couple of SSrank runs on Story mode and sell the Ominous/Large Armor things after getting the policy thing that doubles the value of your items.
So this mission could be pretty much the only mission you grind once you played through Inferno once to unlock the Marleycrew for Bertholds nuke and Annies/Reiner titan and will also allow you to upgrade the Gunblades to max before even starting Inferno.
Should you need Glowing Titan Crystals specifically and already got Solar Swords there is a much better option than replaying story missions with endlessly dragging on dialogue.
Bring Levi and at least 3 SOS-signals, Scout Missions -> Wild Insticts -> Probing the plains, pop a DBS at the beginning, rush the middle, once the Rico lookalike spawns get rid of the stamina, send in Levi, pop an SOS-signal, rinse and repeat. After the 3rd cutscene she will be close to death and you can easily finish her off.
Takes about 2-3 minutes with loadingtimes and result screen so much faster than story missions.
