The maximum level for your character is 100. You will level up fairly rapidly until around level 60, when it will begin to slow down.
To improve your exp gains, in the centre of the main plaza during the daily life sections, talk to the man stood in front of the bell. In the policies section you can use your Wings of Freedom to buy bonuses that will only last for one mission. He will have an exp bonus that will cost you 3 Wings. If possible, return to this guy after every mission to purchase another one of these.
If you can raise your friendship with Erwin to Level 6, he will allow you to purchase a better version of the exp bonus which costs 7 Wings instead.
If you want to make better friends with people during the daily life section, you are able to buy the bonus that allows you to increases your friendship gains with people to use while you go around talking to everyone and then change it to the exp bonus before your next mission.
