Very easy, and self explanatory. In the options menu, change to manual, and use that when you're not actually in a mission.
Remember to switch back before starting missions.

Just as a side note to the above solution.
50 kilometers = 31.0685596 miles
So once your in Manuel Trans. it will take some time to complete. I just got a fast coupe and stood in 4th gear circling around the expressway for this to pop for me. It took me close to 3 complete complete laps around the expressway

Go to "Options" and select transmission to manual. Drive around until the achievement pops up. You don't have to do the shifting as long as you're moving.
