Clothes are needed to make your colonists happy so they are pretty mandatory.
This won't be available from the start and you will need to research some technology and be done with the first stages before you can produce clothes.
The first clothes you will be able to produce are togas.
For that you will need to set up a whole production line from farming bulrush stems using a scythe, making it into bulrush fibre, the buslrush thread making that into buslrush cloth as a base resource for togas.
Lukily the game makes it easy to look up what is necessary to create what, in its ingame instructions.
Also every clothes piece is base resoure for the clothes of a higher level, so you will need to create quite a lot anyway.
Its neccessary to use quite a few bots to automate all the steps as it would take ages to do everything yourself.

Achievement progress continues if you load a save. So you can make a save, make a stack of clothes (toga, robe, coat, coat & scarf), then load the save and do it again. You don't have to make 1000 consecutively.

Why would you do that, if you set up your production lines properly you just can let it run till your achievement pops.
