How to unlock the Act 6 Ace achievement in Back 4 Blood - Definitive Guide

TLDR: Tala bow build, get the Grim Reaper attachment, go nuts. More detailed version below.

By no means is this a perfect solution, or a step by step of how to get through each level since corruption cards make every run different, but having just beat this Act on No Hope, I find this is a pretty solid method for Solo play. It would also work out well for Acts 1 through 5 as well. For all previous acts and difficulties, I used a melee build with Holly, and while it would still work for this as well, with the new Sentient infected, and their love of Ogres on Act 6 I needed to change things up as I found myself taking a little too much damage. They also patched the bots to no longer play Well Rested and Fit as a Fiddle cards, so that hurts the tankiness on Solo quite a bit.

We are going to do a solo Tala bow build. For those that are unaware, playing on solo essentially gives you unlimited continues so long as you press start and hit leave game before a complete wipe, you can pick up at the start of the level you were on ad try again. The corruption cards will still be the same, but you will have another chance. The bots are by no means perfect, but they are more competent than most randoms, and will never shoot you and they give you all their copper so you can buy lots of supplies. I highly suggest upgrading quick use items so you can re-use lock pick kits on health stations.

Bows already had unlimited ammo, using your stam as an ammo pool, but with the most recent update, bows are now affected by cards as well, and make use of the melee attachments, which means we can get a very powerful bow. However, we are going to take this to the next level by taking advantage of a very broken attachment that is currently in the game "The Grim Reaper".

This attachment, if you are lucky enough to get it to spawn grants a %5 chance to insta-kill with an increasing %0.15 chance with each bow or melee kill. When an insta-kill happens you restore 2 health, and it even restores trauma damage. If you get the gold variant it jumps to %10 and 3 health. It can insta-kill any enemy, even an ogre. The only exception being the Harbinger at the end, but he is a joke with the LAW anyway.

Now the attachment can only spawn out of a warped chest (the white ones with the scribbles that give you a de-buff for opening them), but since we are playing with Tala not only do you start with a bow, but she spawns one warped chest per level, and an extra chest in the hives. So, we have a few methods we can try to get a attachment.

Method 1: Slowest method. Start the first chapter of Act 6 and make your way through the level till you find the chest. In my experience it was either in the lock pick room, or up on the cliff after getting through the nature path. If you do not get it, quit and start the chapter over.

Method 2: Better, not perfect. Find a hive in the first chapter, it doesn't always spawn, but it's pretty common, every time I got one it was in the nature path area. In the hive, as Tala you can most likely find 3-4 warped chests. Open them and if you don't get a attachment, hit start and press leave game go back through and open the chests again.

Method 3: The best way I found. keep playing the hive until you find an exit leading deeper down into the Nursery. The great thing about the nursery is right when you go in, there are two ridden chests. Open them and if you don't get the attachment, leave game and come back the farm is extremely fast this way. Now, you will have to fight various mutations to finish the Nursery including hags, breakers and an ogre... but who cares, you have the Grim Reaper now and even Legolas will weep at your power lol.

Ok, now we have the bow we want, but you still get 2 attachment slots. I opted for resonant materials heals 1, 2 or 3 health depending on quality. The other attachment is users' choice, between attack speed or move speed, I went with move speed. You can use burn cards to upgrade the bow quality if you want, or if you plan to buy or pick up better quality bows, make sure to use the card that lets you remove attachments. It is sort of pointless though, I used a white bow with Grim Reaper and cleared no problem.

Deck: This has room for improvement for sure, a lot of cards can be swapped for preference, but it was what I used with 0 problems, feel free to use it as is, as a starting point or to laugh at, the choice is yours.

1.Slugger
2.Brazen
3.Adrenaline Fueled
4. Fill 'Em Full of Lead
5. Mag Coupler
6. Cross Trainers
7. Widemouth Magwell
8. Down in Front
9. Quick Kill
10. EMT Bag
11. Well Rested
12. Hunker Down
13. Food Scavenger
14. Silver Bullets
15. Glass Cannon

Basically, the goal with this deck was to have a lot of reload speed for faster arrows, and really high accuracy since we are disabling ADS. The EMT bag affects both the resonant materials and Grim Reaper attachment. It also affects any other healing you do in the game, such as pills. I also wanted a nice chunk of stam so I could fire the strongest arrows I could, when you run out of stam you can still shoot, but your arrows won't be as powerful. Hunker down pairs great with down in front. Accuracy, defense, and most importantly, you won't kill the bots when you are arrow spamming. Food scav is more helpful than it sounds, those little buffs add up, and it's nice healing each time you get food. You could even pair it with Wasteland Chef (one of the new duffel bag cards) if you wanted better food buffs. While some of the damage cards might seem redundant since we have a one-shot bow, we need damage to get to the attachment, and there is so many ridden throughout the act itself, you won't insta-kill them all, so damage still helps. By far the important cards are the stam, reload, and accuracy attachments. You could swap out other cards for more defense, healing, utility, whatever you like. As for my second weapon, I grabbed an M1A right at the start. With the cards and a scope it has max accuracy when hip firing. I only used it to kill snipers since the arrows don't have the same range.

When you make it to chapter 5 "The Harbinger", make your way through going all Hawkeye on everything you see. Grab laws to hit the harbinger when his chest weak spot opens up and watch for ridden. The fight itself is honestly a joke. His attacks are incredibly inaccurate, and you can take cover very easy. For phase 1 and 3 I stood all way back and he couldn't hit with the spikes, and side stepping his vomit bomb was easy. In phase 2 stand in the kitchen and you have all the cover you need. Just watch for Ridden, which come in hordes and if you listen close the Worm Cult lady calls them, so you know when to be ready. She actually calls all his attacks, so it's a good audio cue to pull the law out to hit his chest. Just don't get close or he will slap you which is a death sentence. The hard part will be after you kill him and c4 the door to escape. You are fighting the timer and unlimited ridden. You have to at least get to the waypoint, but I like to try and get to the safe room since there is a healing station if you need it, but most importantly you can post up in the door, and nothing will get you from behind. If you get to the way point with lots of extra time, I would go for the safe room.

That is pretty much it, get the bow, go nuts. As I mentioned earlier, this build could also be adapted to the other Acts using the same methods as before to get a grim reaper attachment for the bow. If you get stuck in any particular area, feel free to reach out and I will offer any advice I can.

Edit: As Jedi Ninja Nick has said, and confirmed by some other users, the mod can also spawn on weapons that come out of the warped chests as well. If you have the card "Weponsmith" it might be worth bringing to help with the farm, as the spawn rate seems to be rather low on the mod.

Thanks for the responses Grimace!

Undertaker - as far as I’m aware, weaponsmith is a card that you can only buy using your skull tokens, unless I’m mistaken I believe you can only use it as a burn card so it’s pointless unless you have 100s and can use them on every restart in the hope you find the grim reaper

I also don’t believe you can carry two secondary weapons so if you found a melee weapon with the attachment on you won’t be able to pick it up and take it to the next safe house to transfer it to your bow, I suppose you could exchange the bow for the melee and keep restarting in the next safe house until a bow is in the vendor?

Now it’s confirmed the grim reaper definitely shows in the nursery hives, best bet is to replay until the actual attachment is found, that’s what I’ll be doing.

I finally managed to complete this shit show. For me it took around 20h to finally spawn the hive on first mission. I don't know if it is a bug, or the game hates me so much, but that is my reality. I found Nursery on first attempt.
To spawn Grim Reaper attachment took me at least 30 attempts. No exaggeration!
After that it was mostly clear sailing. When I say clear sailing, I mean in comparison, it does not make the game a cake walk, one mistake can still kill your run! I must admit, one shotting Ogre with an arrow is so bad ass, but I am not sure the hell I went through to do it is worth it, but at the same time those 20h I spent looking for hive, I attempted to complete the mission and Ogre would always end my run, even that one time I killed him, my team was so damaged, the horde finished us off. I could not outrun the ogre either, maybe if I altered my setup for quick use...
Also, I suggest no using food scavenger, instead use CONFIDENT KILLER, that 15% really helps. I also swapped out no scope cards for others.
Do with this information what you wish.

Here are the grind times/attempts it took me to get the Grim Reaper attachment:

Hive spawn on first level in the forest - 10 to 15 times

Inner Hive (was on The Cut) - 15-20 times

Restarts on The Nursery for attachment - 4+ hours (Did have Warped Copper corruption card with full stacks; I was moving slow)

I found the attachment on a Bat and I did not have the Weaponsmith card. I was able to do the nursery level and get to the exit taking the bat with me. Then I just kept restarting level 2 until I got a bow in the store to buy and swap attachments. Took about 30 minutes of restarting.

I did another hive on level 3. Was able to get another Inner Hive to spawn. (Again, got the stupid warped copper corruption card) First crate I opened had a purple bow with legendary Grim Reaper attachment.

Also, if you are like me and get warped copper corruption cards; when sliding down the ramp to the crates jump right before the ramp levels out and it will launch you forward. Saving some slow walking time. I didn't figure this out until a couple hours in.

I don't believe all melee cards work for bow because I tried using Vanguard and that did not heal me each time I got a kill with the bow. After reading the patch notes, it only looks like it impacts the ones that actually say bow and is also impacted by bullet damage and reload cards.

Dragonborn, correct not all melee cards work with bow, but ones that do will have bow listed in them. Bows do however make use of the melee mods. I should have perhaps said attachments. I apologize if that caused any confusion. Will update the solution to better refelct what I meant.

Has anyone actually got to the nursery and got anything better than a blue attachment out of the two warped chests?

I was constantly getting yellows when re-doing the first level until I got a hive, I was also getting yellows in warped chests in the first hive.

Must have opened the chests in the nursery over 50 times but have got nothing better than a blue?

I think the solution may need to be reworded to just get to a hive?

Very important note. The grim reaper mod can not only spawn in on its own but also on the melee weapons that drop out of the warp chests. It's a blue or gold (haven't seen people) rarity mod that would be in the right most attachment slot on the weapon. You may want the weaponsmith card in your deck to pull the mod off if it isn't on the bow. Took me awhile to get one to spawn even farming the nursery.

Undertaker, it will spawn as blue or gold variety, and only out of those warped chests. Jedi Ninja mentioned it can also spawn on a melee weapon that spawns out of the warped chests, I personally haven't seen it, but it might be worth also checking the melee weapons and bows before backing out.

The Weponsmith card is purchased witj Skull Tokens, but it is not a burn card. However, you'd need to add it to your deck before hand in order to make use of it.

Swyer, Nirsery is where I got my attachment, definitely the best method since its at least fast to farm.

By TwoHandsofBlue on 28 Dec 2022 17:45
@Twohands, unfortunately its just RNG being RNG. As long as Hives are enabled, there is a chance for the hive to spawn in the forest area. Don't forget to also look for the warped chest that Tala can spawn on the level itself. If the Grim Reaper spawns in there, you don't need the hive as you could one shot the Ogre making the level cake.

Sorry Grimace

Just to clarify, your attachment came out the box by itself and not removed from a weapon?

Seen it a few times on bats and claws but never by itself and starting to lose my mind!

Don’t know wether it’s worth starting again and putting weaponsmith in my deck

Happy to help TwoHands. I have definitely heard reports of people having the very same issue with Hives not spawning, its really odd. Sometimes you see them constantly, other times they never spawn.

@Swyer, yes it can drop as a standalone mod from the warped chests, you do not have to remove them from a weapon, though you can if you are running weapon smith.

That is why either getting the attachment from the crate if you get lucky or by passing it all together with the hive is the best method. You either one shot the ogre, or don't have to fight him.

I will also say after 10 hours today of no hive or grim reaper attachment that it seems like if you have Avarice, you might as well quit. both times I had that active I didn't see a warped chest in either of the two normal locations. I don't understand how anyone finds RNG to this degree to be fun. This is the dumbest game I've played in a long time.

Under the accomplishment tabs in game for act 6 No Hope. Does it show completed. If it does, you could always try submitting a ticket, not sure it will do any good, but worth a shot. I know the actual unlock of the achievement is tied to those accomplishments unlocking, so if it shows completed, you might try a ticket before starting over.

The odds of spawning the attachment are sadly pretty low. 30 tries to finally get one is actually a lot lower than mine. Sadly at the end of the day it all falls to RNG. I had 4 or 5 runs where my previous melee deck (which I used to cruise through No Hope previously) just would not cut it for different reasons. If I would swap out cards to prepare for certain events, I was left wanting in other areas. Couple that with getting a monstrous ogre on a map, or break time and monstrous tallsl boys that one shot me it was a struggle.

While the RNG of actually getting the stars to align for the attachement kinda suck, it was the only way I found consistent success with my runs.

As for why 20h to spawn a hive, I think the game just hated you lol.

So to answer my own question, yes i found the grim Reaper attachment today. It's still in the white boxes but very rare. What worked for me was finding a hive sunken passage on the first mission in the woods. Inside the hive , not only do the white boxes give you 3x the amount of stuff but theres also 4 white boxes down there. Took me about 6-8 retrys to finally find it. Then once you got it just finish the hive . Not that difficult to finish the hive with the skull totem even on no hope.

@RavN. I had that issue too , what I did was play legit and try to advance through the missions. I got to mission 3 and couldn't get any further so I started again. That's when I started seeing hives. For me they were always in the woods , either by the toolkit room or just before you go up the path to the drop off cliff area. Just make sure you circle the woods area every time. Just ignore the hag and keep searching till you see the purple glow of the hive.
Tip to beat last section of mission 1 with the ogre is to use smoke grenades when planting bombs.

I tried the build at first and even though it worked great on 5-1, I decided to use a melee build. This tank was heavily trauma resistant and health regenerating. Destroyed everything in my path. Act 5 was pretty easy afterwards. Act 6 was a bit more challenging, but very manageable after getting the golden grim reaper on a purple machete...

By Dr Marty on 10 Apr 2023 13:21
Dr Marty, yeah I originally was using a tank build like yours, and actually was almost all the way through, but the game just kept throwing ogres at me lol. RNG is definitely a huge factor. I'll tell you what though... one shotting an Ogre with the biw is pretty satisfying lol.

By GrimaceTheGrey on 10 Apr 2023 13:48
I definitely appreciated the long distance range on the bow build, but because of low max health and trauma resistance I frequently got into trouble. The tank was a very low attention, not-much-thinking-just-slashing build.
I agree with the ogre statement. My first run I was dealt "Break Time" (reduces your health to 60) and a ferocious ogre on 6-4 and had to abandon my run. The ogre 1-hit my entire team and I didn't have enough time to quit game before it used up my retry.

By Dr Marty on 10 Apr 2023 14:17
Definitely agree, and the melee build definitely helps you out in situations where health is low. Ultimately the cards really determine if the build will result in a succesful run, which kind of blows lol. It feels like there are some modifiers that just say "sorry that build won't work here" and you are screwed, and the run is a wash.

The hive spawn here definitely feels lower than other levels. I must have started this chapter around 20 times and not seen a hive even once. Surviving with the bow build up until the nature path is also rough. Sometimes I make it, sometimes I don't.

By ReynoldsM on 12 May 2023 05:31
Can't say for certain if the spawn rate is lower or not, but No Hope is going to be rough, no matter how good the build. The build is built around getting your hands on the Grim Reaper mod, and sometimes the mutators are just punishing.

Bravado works better than trauma resistance when playing with bots. You’ll absorb their trauma damage and can mitigate it if you have temp health.

Some of the card combinations that seem to come up in this act are absolutely fucking stupid. I've probably spent seven hours attempting 6-1, eventually got lucky with a nest which I breezed through but now stuck on 6-2 with seemingly infinite bruiser spam combined with ferocious spitters and the fat guys that spit puke (armoured too). The balancing is awful, at the least there should have been a burn card to randomise corruption cards again.

By Roose91 on 09 Jul 2023 16:11
Yeah, that really is the unfortunate thing about the mutations, and probably the reason the game gets so much hate compared to L4D.

Even the best builds are garbage with the right combo of cards, and since they can't re-roll you can end up stuck.

The grim reaper on the bow can help a ton, but I definitely made it by the skin of my teeth on a few levels because of the cards.

I was incredibly lucky and got a Hive and Nursery on first run of both of these. Took me exactly 20 refreshes of the Nursery to get the Grim Reaper attachment. For me it dropped on its own out of 1 of the 2 warped Nursery chests (not the additional Tala one). Made killing bosses and special enemies so much easier for the rest of the run. Definitely worth grinding the time to get the attachment. I don't think I ever took any damage from a Breaker, Ogre, Hag or even Sentinel the whole run, if you are positioning yourself well, you can kill them before they come anywhere near you.

The mod spawn rate does seem to be somewhat low, but I can assure you it will spawn.

Swyer, on the act 1 nursery I have only gotten a blue mod, but it more than did the job to get the clear.

Undertaker, I always see the hives in the forest after blowing up the houses, and before reaching the cliff to area with the ogre.

I finally got it as well, and I never found the nursery, but I did find mine on Brood Lair hive after dozens of attempts to finally find a hive on the first level. The hive itself was in the middle of the middle/main track. I just kept quitting when I got to the very end of the brood lair hive after searching all three/four warped chests. I used a card that gave two more quickslots and I just used the three tool kits I had. I eventually found it as the third slotted attachment (blue) on a blue/rare bow.

Great bow build. Made a few changes, mainly added Pyro card. Didn't bother trying for Grim Reaper. Just reloaded the start of the campaign until I got a purple Resonant Materials. Picked up a Damnation along the way. A few tough spots but overall not too terrible.

@IBKJJ you are supposed to be able to get the achievements, so long as you actually finsh in some capacity, even if its as a bot or just dead in a Multiplayer lobby.

However, I have heard of this happening to some people and most have said that when replaying, the achievement popped when they beat the chapter they died on.

Hopefully you won't need a full playthrough.
